A Short Biography of Prophet Muhammad. This article is from the criteria for evaluation second edition of Jihad in the Qur#8217;an: The Truth from the Source . The book is now in its third edition. Prophet Muhammad was born in 570 CE (Common Era) in the city of Mecca in the Arabian Peninsula, part of modern day Saudi Arabia. As his father had died shortly after marriage, his grandfather #8216;Abd al-Mu t t alib became his guardian. #8216;Abd al-Mu t t alib was the respected head of the clan of H a shim and the tribe of Quraysh, to melting time, which his clan belonged. With the Quraysh being the biggest and most influential tribe in Mecca, #8216;Abd al-Mu t t alib was seen as the master of all of for evaluation Mecca. The Quraysh had a special status in Mecca because they used to be in charge of the sacred Ka#8217;ba. The Qur#8217;an tells us that this holy edifice was built by Prophets Abraham and his son Ishmael:

And when Abraham and Ishmael were raising the foundations of the House [Abraham prayed]: #8220;Our Lord! Accept from us; surely You are the Hearing, the Knowing (2.127). Our Lord! Make us Muslims and raise from our offspring a nation of Muslims. Show us our ways of worship, and relent toward us. Surely, Your are the Relenting, the Merciful#8221; (2.128). Icarus Poems! This means that the Ka#8217;ba was built around 1900 BCE, which is when Abraham is thought to have lived. The Ka#8217;ba maintained its venerable status as the criteria destination of pilgrimage in the eyes of the pilgrims and the Arab population of the Arabian Peninsula down the centuries. #8216;Abd al-Mu t t alib was personally in charge of the Ka#8217;ba.

The Prophet was only about five to icarus poems, six years old when he lost his mother. Orphan Muhammad then lost his grandfather and custodian #8216;Abd al-Mu t t alib at the age of eight. Now one of for evaluation #8216;Abd al-Mu t t alib#8217;s sons, Ab u T a lib, became the guardian of his orphan nephew. Though respected by the clan of H a shim and the people of Mecca in general, Ab u T a lib did not possess the high status and influence of his father. Had he been more fortunate financially, he might have aspired to acquire that special leadership status.

When Muhammad was twenty five years old, he was hired by a woman called Khad i ja to take her merchandize to melting time, Syria. Khad i ja, a widow fifteen years Muhammad#8217;s senior, later proposed marriage to him, which he agreed to. For Evaluation! They lived together for painter almost a quarter of a century, until the death of Khad i ja about 8-9 years after the revelation of the Qur#8217;an. It is interesting to note that Muhammad did not get married to any other woman during Khad i ja#8217;s life, despite the fact that polygamy was common practice in that society. Living out his youth with only one woman in criteria for evaluation that highly polygamous environment contradicts Muhammad#8217;s lecherous image in the Western mind. Muhammad was deeply interested in matters beyond this mundane life. Importance Of Affirmation: Perceived Effect Essay! He used to frequent a cave that became known as #8220; H ir a #8216;#8221; on the Mountain of #8220;N u r#8221; (light) for contemplation. The cave itself, which survived the times, gives a very vivid image of for evaluation Muhammad#8217;s spiritual inclinations. Resting on the top of one of the mountains north of Mecca, the cave is completely isolated from the rest of the world. In fact, it is not easy to find at all even if one knew it existed. After visiting the example egoism cave, I found myself concluding that Muhammad must have been divinely guided to that hideaway, even if he had chosen it consciously.

Once inside the cave, it is a total isolation. Nothing can be seen other than the clear, beautiful sky above and the many surrounding mountains. Criteria! Very little of this world can be seen or heard from inside the cave. The inhabitant of that cave was obviously interested in things beyond this world and its material riches. It was in that cave in 610 CE, i.e. at the age of forty, that Prophet Muhammad received from Allah the first verses of the Qur#8217;an. Then and icarus poems there, history changed.

The Qur#8217;an continued to be revealed in fragments to Prophet Muhammad over the following twenty two years. For Evaluation! The last words of the Book were revealed to the Prophet shortly before his death in 632 CE. We will read more about the Qur#8217;an in section 2.2. In the first two to example of ethical egoism, three years after the revelation, the Prophet preached Islam secretly to individuals whom he trusted. When he started calling people to Islam publicly, the new religion gradually attracted more people but, not surprisingly, also increasing hostility from the idol worshipping population of criteria for evaluation Mecca.

The Prophet was subjected to example of ethical, harassment and abuse. However, armed with patience, resilience, and determination, and criteria for evaluation protected by his uncle Ab u T a lib and the clan of H a shim, the example Prophet was able to carry on for evaluation preaching the new faith to people. Converts to Islam, some of whom were slaves, had to suffer all kinds of persecution, including brutal torture and murder, at the hands of the enemies of the new religion in Mecca. In 614 CE, the Prophet had to instruct a group of Muslims to escape the icarus poems persecution to Abyssinia and seek the for evaluation protection of its just Christian king. The Quraysh then sent a delegation to painter melting time, the king, carrying precious gifts, to secure the extradition of the Muslim refugees. The king, however, rejected the bribe and let the Muslims stay in Abyssinia. One year later, the Quraysh imposed economic and social sanctions on the Prophet, his followers, and his clan.

As a result, the Muslims withdrew to a mountain in for evaluation Mecca. The sanctions lasted about three years before collapsing in Importance Perceived Value 618/619 CE without achieving their goals. Soon afterward, the Prophet lost his wife Khad i ja. Matters got worse quickly with the criteria death of his uncle and another word protector. Criteria For Evaluation! Prophet Muhammad started to suffer more from the disbelievers#8217; relentless attempts to of Affirmation: Perceived Value Effect Essay, uproot Islam and destroy its followers. During the criteria pilgrimage season in 622 CE, Muhammad met in Mecca with a number of chiefs from the city of Yathrib, where he had previously sent some Muslims to settle in. Having converted to Islam, the chiefs made a secret pledge to protect the Prophet should the Quraysh try to kill him. However, the Quraysh learned about the agreement, so the people from Yathrib had to icarus poems, return quickly to their city. For Evaluation! Sensing that the danger to Muslims has increased, Muhammad instructed them to immigrate individually or in small groups to painter melting, Yathrib. Criteria For Evaluation! The Qurayshites tried to prevent Muslims from fleeing Mecca to Yathrib, but the converts continued to sneak out gradually.

The continuing immigration of Muslims to Yathrib where they had allies was already very bad news for the Qurayshites. This could yet get much worse if Muhammad also would move to that city. They decided that they had no other option but to kill him. The various clans of the tribe of Quraysh agreed to act as one and assassinate the Prophet while asleep. The idea behind acting collectively was that no one party could be blamed for the killing and become embroiled in a war of vengeance with the clan of icarus poems H a shim.

The assassination plan, however, was sabotaged by criteria for evaluation divine intervention. The night the murder was planned to take place, Allah informed His Prophet of the danger and ordered him to secretly leave Mecca and head to the city of Yathrib. The latter became known as #8220;al-Mad i na al-Munawwara#8221; (the illuminated city), or #8220;al-Mad i na#8221; for brief, after the fred nietzsche arrival of the Prophet. This famous event, known as the #8220; Hijra #8221; (immigration), occurred in 622 CE, about criteria for evaluation twelve years after the revelation of the first verses of the Qur#8217;an. This flight was destined to fred nietzsche, have far-reaching consequences in establishing the Islamic community, strengthening the position of Islam, and spreading its message. The Prophet lived in al-Mad i na for for evaluation about ten years.

By the time of his departure from this world in 632 CE, Islam had become well established as the religion of the Arabian Peninsula and had made inroads in neighboring regions; Muslims had become a major force to be reckoned with in the area. There are a number of good, detailed English biographies of Prophet Muhammad. One biography written by a non-Muslim is Karen Armstrong#8217;s Muhammad: A Biography of the Prophet (London: Phoenix Press, 2001). Another one written by a Muslim is Martin Lings#8217; Muhammad: His Life Based on the Earliest Sources (Inner Traditions Intl Ltd, 1987). For easy reference, this is a short chronology of major events in the life of Prophet Muhammad: Birth of the Prophet in Mecca. His father was already dead when he was born. The death of the Prophet#8217;s mother. The death of the Prophet#8217;s grandfather and custodian #8216;Abd al-Mu t t alib. The Prophet#8217;s uncle Ab u T a lib became his guardian. The first revelation of the Qur#8217;an.

The Prophet started calling people to Islam publicly. The first immigration of Muslims to Abyssinia escaping the persecution of the fred nietzsche idol-worshipping Meccans. Criteria For Evaluation! They stayed there for three months. A second immigration to Abyssinia, involving more Muslims, took place later on. This time, the immigrants stayed in Abyssinia until 628 CE when they rejoined the Prophet in al-Mad i na. Painter Melting Time! The tribe of Quraysh imposed economic and social sanctions on Muslims and the clan of Prophet Muhammad, H a shim. The collapse of the sanctions. The death of Ab u T a lib , the Prophet#8217;s uncle, triggering increased hostility from the Meccans toward the Prophet.

The emigration of the Prophet from Mecca to al-Mad i na. The first major battle of the criteria for evaluation Muslims against the disbelievers, known as the battle of fred nietzsche Badr. I LOVE HIM WITH ALL MY HEART AND I HOPE WE ALL MEET HIM ONE DAY 3. Muhammed appears to have many admirable qualities as a human being. To be quite frank,I think one of the things that makes nonmuslims reluctant to criteria, endorse him as among the greatest of example egoism all prophets or holy men is criteria his caravan raiding to fred nietzsche, support his community and for evaluation the use of force , perhaps quite justified for the 7th century. However those activities don#8217;t seem consistent with the highest aspiration of human goodness for the modern sensibility. Nevertheless his concern for the poor and another oppressed gives much for for evaluation nonmuslims to appreciate about him. Instead of just looking at Wireless Technology Essay the prophet(pbuh) as someone who looted caravans,It is better you realize whose caravans were looted. The caravans belonged to the Quraish of Mecca, who had seized the properties of Muslims and thrown them out of mecca. The Muslims were oppressed and criteria for evaluation had lost everything they owned, leaving them penniless and homeless just because they believed in the oneness of god.Later when the icarus poems new Islamic state was established in Medina, revenge for the lost property was unleashed by attacking the for evaluation quraish caravans which had to pass via medina to trade with Syria ,Yemen etc. thank you very much for the info. hope we all follow prophet muhammad (pbuh) way of living. Evaluation Guidelines

From the Editors: Common method variance in international business research. JIBS receives many manuscripts that report findings from analyzing survey data based on same-respondent replies. This can be problematic since same-respondent studies can suffer from common method variance (CMV). Currently, authors who submit manuscripts to criteria, JIBS that appear to suffer from CMV are asked to another, perform validity checks and resubmit their manuscripts. This letter from the Editors is designed to for evaluation, outline the Perceived Value Effect Essay current state of best practice for handling CMV in international business research.

A large number of papers submitted to for evaluation, JIBS use data collected from a survey instrument. When self-report questionnaires are used to collect data at the same time from the same participants, common method variance (CMV) may be a concern. This concern is melting strongest when both the dependent and focal explanatory variables are perceptual measures derived from the same respondent ( Podsakoff Organ, 1986 ). CMV is variance that is attributable to the measurement method rather than to the constructs the measures represent ( Podsakoff, MacKenzie, Lee, Podsakoff, 2003 : 879). Criteria? CMV creates a false internal consistency, that is, an apparent correlation among variables generated by painter their common source. For example, this could occur if a researcher asks respondents to evaluate an criteria, MNE's organizational capabilities and the firm's international performance in another word the same survey. Criteria For Evaluation? In such cases, self-report data can create false correlations if the respondents have a propensity to provide consistent answers to survey questions that are otherwise not related. Thus, common methods can cause systematic measurement errors that either inflate or deflate the observed relationships between constructs, generating both Type I and Type II errors.

Scholarly views of CMV differ. Campbell (1982 : 692), a former editor of the Journal of Applied Psychology , provides a strongly negative assessment (italics added): If there is no evident construct validity for the questionnaire measure or no variables that are measured independently of the questionnaire , I am biased against the study and Wireless Technology Essay example believe that it contributes very little. On the other hand, some scholars argue that the CMV problem may be overstated ( Crampton Wagner, 1994 ; Lindell Whitney, 2001 ; Spector, 1987 ), and even an criteria for evaluation, urban legend ( Spector, 2006 ). A recent exhaustive review of research on Perceived Effect Essay CMV in criteria behavioral research reaches a more balanced conclusion: common method variance is often a problem and researchers need to example, do whatever they can to criteria for evaluation, control for it ( Posdsakoff et al., 2003 : 900). The specific details of the research methodology are clearly relevant in determining the likelihood and degree of common method bias. Podsakoff et al. (2003) explore four general sources of CMV: the use of a common rater, the manner in which items are presented to respondents, the context in which items on painter a questionnaire are placed, and the contextual influences (time, location and media) used to measure the constructs. 1 Some CMV sources may be more problematic than others, for example, perceptual data from single raters may be more worrisome than the manner in criteria for evaluation which items are presented in the survey instrument. A manuscript that suffers from more potential sources of CMV should, in general, be more problematic than one with fewer sources. Fred Nietzsche? The most worrisome example of CMV, according to the authors (2003: 885), occurs when the data for both the predictor and criterion variable are obtained from the same person in the same measurement context using the same item context and similar item characteristics. The JIBS editors see CMV as a potentially serious concern for criteria for evaluation, researchers using survey-based data, 2 especially where the dependent and independent variables are perceptual and melting from the same source. 3 JIBS editors and reviewers must therefore assess not only whether CMV exists, but also how likely it is to criteria, generate Type I and Type II errors. Our position is to inform potential contributors that they should, prior to journal submission, deal with potential CMV biases in their research both seriously and fred nietzsche explicitly.

HOW CAN CMV BE ADDRESSED BY RESEARCHERS? The obvious strategy is, of course, to avoid any potential CMV in the research design stage by using other sources of information for some of the key measures. In particular, if possible, the dependent variable should be constructed using information from different sources than the independent variables. A number of procedural remedies in designing and administering the criteria questionnaire, from mixing the order of the questions to using different scale types, can reduce the likelihood of icarus poems, CMV. Complicated specifications of regression models reduce the likelihood of criteria, CMV. Specifically, respondents are unlikely to be guided by a cognitive map that includes difficult-to-visualize interaction and Perceived Value non-linear effects. This is for evaluation less likely the more complicated the model. There are several statistical remedies to detect and control for any possible CMV.

A post hoc Harman one-factor analysis is often used to check whether variance in the data can be largely attributed to painter, a single factor. Additionally, other statistical procedures can be applied to partial out common factors or to control for criteria, them. Remedies 1 and 2 are ex ante approaches implemented in the research design stage. Painter? Remedy 1 is clearly the best option since, by definition, spurious correlations due to CMV cannot occur. Criteria? Remedy 2 can also ex ante reduce the likelihood of the consistency motive and theory-in-use biases in the informant responses. Remedies 3 and 4 are ex post approaches implemented after the research has been conducted. Remedy 3 implies that the likelihood of another, CMV can be reduced by criteria specifying complex relationships that are unlikely to be part of the example of ethical egoism respondents cognitive maps, while remedy 4 corrects for criteria for evaluation, CMV through a variety of statistical procedures. We first discuss these four basic remedies below and then offer our advice to international business scholars on how to handle the possibility of CMV in for honorable their research. REMEDIES 1 AND 2: AVOID CMV IN THE EX ANTE RESEARCH DESIGN STAGE. The best way to avoid or minimize any potential CMV bias is to collect measures for different constructs from different sources (remedy 1).

Ideally, the dependent variable(s) are collected from criteria for evaluation a different source than the independent variables are collected from. 4 For example, subsidiary-level autonomy or decision-making power of a subsidiary-level manager could be measured with a local survey, whereas a subsidiary performance measure could be constructed from icarus poems information provided by the multinational headquarters or from a local archival source. If it is not possible to obtain data from different sources, another possibility is to for evaluation, collect data at painter, different points in time. Preferably, all this is part of the ex ante research design. For Evaluation? A second best strategy would be to fred nietzsche, collect such additional information ex post . Another ex ante research strategy involves the criteria for evaluation way the questionnaire is designed and administered (remedy 2). Respondents should be assured of the anonymity and confidentiality of the study, that there are no right or wrong answers, and that they should answer as honestly as possible. 5 Moreover, more fact-based questionnaire items are less likely to be associated with CMV. Fred Nietzsche? Podsakoff et al. (2003 : 888) state that these procedures should reduce people's evaluation apprehension and make them less likely to edit their responses to be more socially desirable, lenient, acquiescent and consistent with how the researcher wants them to respond. Additionally, great care must be taken to systematically examine the construction of items so as to ensure that ambiguous, vague and unfamiliar terms are not included, and that the questionnaire as a whole and criteria for evaluation the individual items are formulated as concisely as possible (see Harrison, McClaughlin, Coalter, 1996 ; Lindell Whitney, 2001 ; Podsakoff et al., 2003 ). These methods reduce problems in the comprehension stage of the response process. Technology? Of course, these strategies reflect standard survey practices in any case, whether or not CMV is an criteria for evaluation, issue. Specifically related to icarus poems, CMV, Podsakoff et al. (2003 : 888) suggest that another way to diminish method biases is to use different scale endpoints and formats for the predictor and criterion measures.

This should reduce method biases caused by commonalities in scale endpoints and anchor effects. In a recently published JIBS article on the international location decision, for criteria for evaluation, instance, Galan, Gonzalez-Benito, and Zuniga-Vincente (2007) measured the dependent variable in two different ways so as to avoid potential CMV with independent variables that were operationalized as perception-based measures. Moreover, counterbalancing the order of word, questions relating to different scales and constructs makes CMV less likely, as the respondent cannot then easily combine related items to cognitively create the correlation needed to criteria, produce a CMV-biased pattern of responses ( Murray, Kotabe, Zhou, 2005 ). One option is to randomize the order of the questions using survey software. For instance, in icarus poems a JIBS article examining the influence of criteria for evaluation, parent control on conflict in international joint ventures, Barden, Steensma, and Lyles (2005) used different response anchors across measured constructs, separated measurements in time, and manipulated the order of questionnaire items in such a way that CMV across dependent, independent and control variables became very unlikely. REMEDIES 3 AND 4: DEAL WITH CMV IN THE EX POST STATISTICAL ANALYSES. CMV is more likely to painter melting time, emerge in models that are overly simple. A third approach is therefore to specify relationships among the dependent and independent variables that are not so simple that these relationships are likely to criteria, be part of the Wireless Technology Essay individual raters cognitive maps. In this context, Harrison et al. (1996 : 248) refer to the cognitive miser principle. For Evaluation? For instance, take a questionnaire in which local subordinates are asked about the effect of the frequency of their expatriate leader's communication with his or her subordinates on the subordinates stress level.

Suppose that the theory predicts that this effect is non-linearly moderated by the subordinates locus of control trait. Including a non-linear interaction term in the model is likely to reduce CMV because such a complex relationship is, in all likelihood, not part of the respondents theory-in-use. A problem with this approach is that interpretation of the empirical results is made more difficult by the complexity of the arguments. Importance Perceived Value Essay? As a result, the remedy of overcomplexity could be worse than the disease of CMV. 6 Basically, adding complexity such as mediating, moderating and/or non-linear effects makes sense only if guided by a good theory. In the end, sound theory that directs design and method is, of course, the bottom line that characterizes all good research, be it survey-based or not. The fourth remedy is to criteria, apply ex post statistical approaches. Fred Nietzsche? Indeed, there are quite a few of them; here, we only briefly refer to some of the more popular ones since there are several other papers with more details (please refer to the references attached to this Letter). Perhaps the most common but ineffective response by criteria for evaluation authors to address CMV (other than ignoring it) is to rely on Harman's single-factor test to assert that their research is not pervasively affected by CMV. This method loads all items from each of the constructs into an exploratory factor analysis to see whether one single factor does emerge or whether one general factor does account for a majority of the covariance between the fred nietzsche measures; if not, the criteria claim is Wireless Technology example that CMV is for evaluation not a pervasive issue. Fred Nietzsche? However, Podsakoff et al. (2003) explain that this claim is criteria likely to be incomplete because Harman's test is insensitive.

It is another unlikely that a single-factor model will fit the data, and there is no useful guideline as to criteria, what would be the acceptable percentage of explained variance of a single-factor model. Painter? The JIBS team therefore believes that simply reporting seemingly reassuring outcomes from for evaluation Harman's single-factor test is Perceived insufficient to for evaluation, prove that CMV is not a pervasive issue. Lindell and Whitney (2001) , Podsakoff et al. (2003) and Malhotra, Kim, and Patil (2006) review several statistical methods that are more sophisticated than Harman's test, which can be used to test and possibly control for CMV. Different statistical remedies are available for for honorable, different types of for evaluation, research settings and different sources of CMV. Promising statistical remedies include a partial correlation procedure and icarus poems a direct measure of criteria, a latent common method factor.

The former method partials out the melting first unrotated factor from the exploratory factor analysis, and then continues to determine whether the theoretical relationships among the variables of interest do still hold. The latter method allows questionnaire items to load on their theoretical constructs, as well as on a latent CMV factor, and examines the significance of criteria for evaluation, theoretical constructs with or without the common factor method. Both methods have their own limitations, however, one of which is the assumption that the sources of fred nietzsche, CMV can be well identified and validly measured. 7 A recommended solution is to use multiple remedies, not just one remedy, in order to assuage the various concerns about CMV. JIBS receives many manuscripts that report results from estimating models that use same-source surveys and thus may suffer from common methods problems. However, while psychology journals have worried about CMV since the early 1980s, and have implemented techniques to handle this problem since at least the mid-1990s, the common methods issue has been slow to be recognized, and is much less addressed, by criteria for evaluation international business scholars.

Best practices in the macro disciplines appear to painter melting time, have lagged behind those in the micro disciplines, probably because the micro areas (e.g., organizational behavior and human resource management) rely most heavily on criteria surveys, whereas the painter melting macro areas (e.g., strategic management and organizational ecology) are more likely to use archival datasets. In March 2009, we reviewed all the articles published in criteria JIBS between 2000 and the present for example of ethical egoism, evidence of potential sources of criteria, CMV. Of the 430 articles examined, 40% (173 articles) relied on either primary surveys and/or quantified interviews as the fred nietzsche data source. The 173 articles were then characterized by potential sources of common methods bias. Almost all the articles (167 articles) contained one or more sources of CMV, and criteria most appeared to word for honorable, have multiple sources. Only 65 of the 167 articles (about one-third) mentioned or addressed common methods in their paper. Of this group, half the articles (32) used Harman's single-factor test or something similar to test for CMV. Fifteen articles used another approach. Only nine articles used both Harman's test and at least one other correction method to control for CMV.

These statistics, of criteria, course, tell us only how frequently common methods appear in recently published JIBS articles, not the magnitude of the potential bias from example of ethical CMV in these articles. Previous research estimating the magnitude of the effects did not include JIBS articles; see for criteria for evaluation, example, Doty and Glick (1998) and Cote and Buckley (1987) . Another Word? So, the most we can say is there may be a problem based on criteria frequency of painter melting time, usage of criteria, common methods, but at fred nietzsche, present we have no estimates of the magnitude of the problem. Based on this short survey, it appears that common method bias has not been recognized nor addressed by most IB scholars, even in JIBS , the top journal in the field of international business. We recognize, of course, that standards for criteria for evaluation, rigor in empirical work are continually rising. What were acceptable methodological practices even five years ago can easily and rapidly become unacceptable as social science scholars better understand the limitations of their empirical techniques and develop more rigorous methods for icarus poems, identifying and correcting for potential biases in their work. The purpose of our Letter from the Editors is therefore not to criticize earlier research, but rather to encourage IB scholars to for evaluation, implement current best practices in research methods. We argue that the hurdle barrier must now be set higher in JIBS vis a vis CMV. It is time for fred nietzsche, IB scholars to criteria for evaluation, address, and reduce or offset where feasible, the use of common methods in their empirical work. We conclude that many JIBS submissions in the past, when the data came from surveys (and/or quantified interviews, for that matter), have ignored the issue of CMV. Where the authors have addressed CMV, the typical response has been to report seemingly reassuring results from Harman's single-factor test. The JIBS editors believe this approach has been insufficient.

For the current editorial team, it is now standard practice to return a manuscript to the author when it appears to suffer from common method bias and the issue has been ignored in the manuscript. The desk rejection letter asks the author to perform validity checks and resolve any CMV issues before resubmitting the manuscript. Addressing CMV only after desk rejection is not the ideal strategy, of course. Example Of Ethical Egoism? The first-best strategy is to prevent potential CMV at the research design stage using remedy 1, that is, by collecting data from multiple sources. Ex ante , before running any analyses, the collection of key information from other sources should be planned, using where possible archival data and multiple respondents. Alternatively, additional information can be collected afterwards. An example of remedy 1 is Carraher, Sullivan, and Crocitto (2008) , who surveyed expatriate employees but obtained their expat performance measure from company records filed by the individual's supervisor rather than from the expat respondents themselves. Approaches for handling common method variance (CMV). More often than not, a perfect solution is out of reach.

If ex ante methods are not doable, the for evaluation JIBS editors recommend that IB scholars use multiple ex post procedural remedies including possibly a more complex model specification, and example egoism partialing out for evaluation, or controlling for CMV (remedies 2, 3 and 4). What we ask for is that CMV-related methodological issues should be discussed carefully and explicitly in melting any manuscript submitted to JIBS that uses single-respondent data. This will often imply the need to apply a number of the remedies referred to criteria, above. While the problems with CMV were not well understood by IB scholars in the past and, as a result, there were many JIBS articles published that might suffer from multiple sources of common methods bias, the standards have changed and Importance Perceived Value IB scholars must adopt current best practices. Of course, all other validity and reliability tests should also be conducted and reported in the manuscript. In singling out criteria for evaluation, CMV in this Letter from the Editors we do not want to give JIBS authors the impression that they should ignore other validity and Essay example reliability tests of their quantitative and qualitative research methods they should not. We advance the field not only through theory development, but also through careful and thorough empirical work using best practices. As international business researchers, we also recognize that sometimes common methods cannot be totally avoided, for example, if the research probes into difficult waters where data of any kind are scarce such as in severely understudied parts of the world (Africa, the for evaluation Middle East), or where the for honorable research undertaken is so novel or insightful that this may be considered over standard methodological considerations. Editors and reviewers should not reject innovative manuscripts that push the criteria boundaries of our knowledge of international business solely on the grounds of time, common methods.

In such situations, the gains in criteria for evaluation creativity and impact might outweigh the loss of methodological purity. Another example where CMV may be tolerated is large-scale research projects involving multiple countries where obtaining separate data sources for all the countries is impossible. Such large-scale projects typically deal with potential national differences in response bias by using within-subject standardization, mean centering the scores of Wireless example, individuals, or using regression approaches to control for national differences in response biases. These studies also typically link some sort of criteria, aggregate nation scores to a separate source archival predictor or criterion. Cross-country comparative studies where the intent of the study is to treat cognitive structures and processes of a population as a dependent variable might well want to icarus poems, use same-source correlations as a good indicator of shared aspects of cognition, with a national indicator as a separate-source predictor of these same-source correlations. Lastly, we want to make it clear to the JIBS community that it is not our intent in this Letter from the Editors to privilege IB researchers who use large, readily available datasets such as Compustat, Orbis or SDC Platinum. Criteria? Rather, we want to encourage primary and qualitative research in international business including surveys but at fred nietzsche, the same time increase awareness among IB researchers of potential CMV biases so that they can be avoided in the design stage. Except for several special circumstances as illustrated above, if common method bias is a potential issue in an IB research project, the authors should address this issue as they already do for other validity issues before submitting their research to JIBS . For Evaluation? We are looking for fred nietzsche, more careful examination from all IB researchers in proving the robustness of for evaluation, their results, and hope this Letter from the Editors will help raise the quality standards for empirical research by fred nietzsche future IB scholars. For example, a researcher may be interested in a hypothesized relationship between constructs A and B (for example, A can be an for evaluation, organizational characteristic of an MNE and B the melting time firm's international performance).

If the measures of criteria for evaluation, A and B are derived from melting time information provided by a single rater within each MNE, aggregated across multiple MNEs, there may be spurious systematic correlations between these two measures. In this instance, the correlations are superficial connections imposed by using the same source rather than demonstrating actual patterns in practice. As a consequence, without any appropriate correction for CMV, estimates from questionnaires could well be spurious. The estimates may not reveal any real underlying theoretical relationship, but rather the criteria artificial cognitive maps of reality that are hidden in the respondents minds. Consequently, the reported analyses are likely to suffer from Type I and Type II errors. CMV is by no means a problem only for primary researchers. Many large archival datasets, including official government statistics, are also gathered through same-source surveys and Importance of Affirmation: Value Essay thus can also suffer from for evaluation CMV and icarus poems other methodological biases. Thus, researchers using archival data sources should also be aware of potential biases and criteria for evaluation address them in a proper manner. Many journals routinely desk reject papers with any type of sloppiness.

For good advice on this, albeit from a different discipline, see http://www.math.ucla.edu/ Method 1, however, faces a potential ethical barrier if the survey respondents were anonymous since survey data (e.g., leadership perception) must be matched with information from other sources (e.g., employee appraisal) that could compromise the respondents anonymity. We recognize that researchers who have promised anonymity must ethically provide it, even though doing so increases the example of ethical egoism difficulty of finding external corroborative sources. Note that providing anonymity, however, creates ethical dilemmas for method 1, as discussed in the previous endnote. See, for instance, McClelland and Judd (1993) , who point out difficulties in detecting and interpreting interactions and criteria moderator effects. Note that a complete identification of all sources of CMV is of Affirmation: Value Effect not necessary. For instance, partial correlation adjustment works if a variable theoretically unrelated with others, preferably the dependent variable, can be identified and used in the adjustment ( Lindell Whitney, 2001 ; Malhotra et al., 2006 ).

This letter reflects the opinion of the JIBS editors. We thank Wendy Boswell and Duane Ireland for helpful early discussions about for evaluation, CMV. Essay Example? We particularly appreciate the empirical work by Li Dai (PhD student at the Department of Management at Texas AM), who browsed through many issues of JIBS in search of CMV best practices, and Les Graham (Durham Business School, UK), who provided an for evaluation, excellent overview of the literature. We gratefully acknowledge the excellent suggestions made by other JIBS editors and members of the JIBS Consulting Editors and Editorial Review Board. This letter went through two rounds of single-blind review. In total, we received about 30 reports from editorial board reviewers, many of them providing multiple pages of detailed comments. Word?
