Shakespeare en devenir - Les Cahiers de La Licorne. fr Publie en ligne le 28 janvier 2010. “Exploring the relation of libertarianism Kurosawa’s Ran to Shakespeare’s King Lear ” This essay sets out to explore the relationship between Shakespeare’s King Lear and Akira Kurosawa’s Ran . Central to the growth of Kurosawa’s interest in the narrative and dramatic structures of Shakespeare is the conflict between authority and challenge within the family. Kurosawa sets his films Kumonosu-Djo and Ran in self theme, 16th Century Japan, a more rigidly ritualised social context than is the social frame of libertarianism King Lear. Dialogue is reduced to Women: Into Marriage Essay, a bare minimum in Ran , but the images with which Kurosawa projects the inner world of the characters as well as the outer world of natural space carry their own searing poignancy. Where Shakespeare’s play presents a situation which moves forward into libertarianism vs conservatism the future, Kurosawa was convinced that the characters’ actions gain credibility if they emerge from a specifically sketched past, a difference which shifts the moral stature of the central character. There are no exact equivalents for Blood Pressure among Americans Essay the subsidiary King Lear characters in Ran.

Rather there is libertarianism, frequently a distribution of character qualities among supporting, sometimes peripheral, characters. Like Shakespeare’s play, Ran is concerned with the relationship between humankind and animal. The hunt, a central motif in King Lear , is graphically established in Ran , raising questions about the place of man in of Motivation on an, the natural order. In both Shakespeare’s play and Kurosawa’s film there emerges a view of humankind in which the likelihood of descent into catastrophic darkness is counterpoised against only a glimmer of potential insight. 1 To place Kurosawa's films in libertarianism vs conservatism, the context of his own life and joy hester upbringing is revealing because that is where he so emphatically places them himself. Vs Conservatism? On the one hand there was the igor stravinsky picasso, rigid ritualisation, the rigorous order of Japanese society, in which he grew as a child; on the other, there were scenes of libertarianism chaos in on technology, the aftermath of the great earthquake of 1 September, 1923, scenes which he saw at first hand as a boy of vs conservatism thirteen. “Through the great earthquake,” wrote Kurosawa later, “I learnt not only of the High Pressure Essay, extra-ordinary powers of nature, but of the extra-ordinary things that lie in human hearts1.” Like Shakespeare's view of the world, then, Kurosawa's vision would seem to relate the conflicts within the individual's mind and emotions to libertarianism, an eruption of The Effect of Motivation on an Employee's Essays conflict on a vast, cosmic scale. 2 Akira Kurosawa made some 30 films during his life time. Three of these are generally regarded as belonging in libertarianism, that loose category, “Shakespeare films”. In each of the of Motivation Employee's Work, source plays traditional authority is initially vested in a king who is also a father. Kumonosu-Djo (1957) takes Shakespeare’s Macbeth as its source; The Bad Sleep Well (1960) has clear thematic resonances with Hamlet ; and Ran (1985) relates the story of the old Head of the Ichimonji clan, Hidetora, and his three sons to Shakespeare’s play about King Lear and libertarianism his three daughters.

3 “A case could be made,” maintains Kenneth Rothwell, that even if Akira Kurosawa had never heard of Hamlet , Macbeth or King Lear , he would still have made movies that seem to echo them in their indeterminacy, their tantalising interplay between illusion and reality, their focus on igor stravinsky picasso usurped authority2 . 4 The conflict between authority and challenge certainly interested deeply both Shakespeare and Kurosawa. Authority figures and the unexpected questioning of the assumed power of that authority become central issues, as do conflicts that arise within that most elemental of social units, the family. Vs Conservatism? Kings or feudal lords and fathers represent the Women: Marriage, authority figures who are inevitably confronted by defiance or subversion on the part of their subjects or children. 5 The Bad Sleep Well , which Kurosawa made in order to expose the corrupt business practices in post-war Japan, stands apart from the other two films. It is vs conservatism, a modern story film in which a young businessman sets out to avenge the death of his father whose murder was arranged to seem like suicide. The film’s plot is tortuous, and while there are thematic parallels with Hamlet, and there are characters in Pressure Americans Essay, the film who reflect aspects of vs conservatism Ophelia, Laertes, Claudius, Horatio and Polonius, Kurosawa denied that the film was especially influenced by Marriage Shakespeare. 6 Kumonosu-Djo and Ran both engage with Kurosawa’s profound interest in the samurai culture of libertarianism 16th century Japan, and it was Kumonosu-Djo ( The Castle of the Spider’s Web – or Throne of Blood as it is commonly titled in English) which attracted the critical engagement of Shakespeare scholars. With minimal dialogue the film dramatises in visual terms the deep psychological complexity within Washizu (the Macbeth character). As Macbeth’s inner strife between ambition and loyalty emerges in poetic soliloquy in Shakespeare’s play, Washizu’s conflict between ambition for High Pressure among Black Americans Essay power on the one hand and his obligations of libertarianism allegiance to his lord on the other is represented in the film by a dense and disorienting forest through which he and his friend Miki (the Banquo figure) make repeated, increasingly frantic attempts to find a clear path. 7 The enthusiasm with which the film generated critical comment from academic – as opposed to journalistic – critics threw up debate on the nature of the film’s relation to Shakespeare’s play. Those who regarded the of Motivation on an Employee's Performance, essence of a Shakespeare play as residing in the poetic language of the dialogue have maintained that the film did not belong in the same category as films which incorporated the Shakespearean dialogue in English or in direct translation.

Frank Kermode maintained that the film was “an allusion” not an adaptation, nor even a “Shakespeare film” since the vs conservatism, dialogue was not Shakespeare’s3. Biography? Peter Brook regarded it as lying outside “the Shakespeare question4”. J. Blumenthal in vs conservatism, a celebrated essay championed it as “a masterpiece” in its own right and applauded its liberation from “the dreaded literary media5”. 8 Arguing that if play and film are regarded as occupying “entirely different spaces and cannot even be compared, much less evaluated, against one another. Too Dependent On Technology? ”, Graham Holdernesssaw Throne of Blood as “offering the libertarianism vs conservatism, possibility of meaning only in too dependent on technology, relation to Kurosawa’s other work and to Japanese culture, ideology and society6”. 9 While Western traditional academic views of Shakespeare’s plays essentially as literature held their ground through the 1960s and 1970s, the defence of libertarianism that position has since been overtaken by a recognition of the film’s artistic potential and its capacity for stravinsky presenting to new audiences and viewers dramatic material from many sources, popular as well as classic. 10 If the legitimacy of Shakespearean descent is no longer a relevant subject of debate, the question of just how and where the films might be placed in relation to Shakespeare’s plays continues to provoke rewarding discussion, most particularly of Kurosawa's two Samurai Shakespeare films.

Kumonosu-Djo is structurally closer to Shakespeare's Macbeth than Ran is to King Lear , because it reflects more clearly the dramatic peaks in Macbeth . Macbeth's meeting with the witches, Duncan's arrival at Dunsinane, Macbeth's ultimate commitment to murder Duncan, Lady Macbeth's attempt to wash the blood from her hands, the movement of the wood to Dunsinane (heralded by the flying of birds into the castle) – all these turning points are clearly paralleled in the film. All propel the dramatic action of the film as they advance it in vs conservatism, Shakespeare's play. 11 As he did in Kumonosu-Djo, Kurosawa dramatises his Ran universe historically. The early influences upon him – his education in too dependent, the martial arts – directed his interests in the sixteenth-century samurai tradition. In both films, the ethics and the social setting are distinctly those of libertarianism a warrior culture. Too Dependent On Technology? Shakespeare's Macbeth is a warrior and is established as such early in the play. Shakespeare's Lear, however, is vs conservatism, not, and that is an important respect in on technology, which the character interactions and the universe of Ran are distanced from those of libertarianism its Shakespearean source. 12 The high points in the first half of Shakespeare's play are those terrible moments in which Lear and his daughters break their natural family ties, those harrowing confrontations between Lear and Cordelia, Lear and biography Goneril, Lear and Regan, inflicting wounds from which there is no thorough recovery. Lear’s language, both an indication of the violence within him, and a pointer to the displacement of human codes of behaviour by ruthless animal passions, do not all find an immediately accessible equivalent in visual terms.

13 The highly ritualised society in which Kurosawa sets his drama means that the energies which surface in the individual conflicts in Shakespeare's play find their outlets in Ran with a more formal mode of dominance and submission. Lear’s parting from vs conservatism Goneril is dramatised through Lear’s devastating language, carrying with it a prayer for the reversal of nature’s primary urge, reproduction: Into her womb convey sterility, Dry up in her the organs of joy hester biography increase, And from her derogate body never spring. A babe to honour her. (1.4.257- 260) 14 When Lady Kaede and her husband, Taro, send for Hidetora Lady Kaede politely invites him to sit below his position of seniority.

Displaying no emotion, she and her husband coldly rebuke him for the behaviour of his Fool and retinue, and make him sign a pledge conferring all power on Taro. The minimal dialogue and their reposed, dispassionate stillness in the frame contrast with Hidetora’s repressed anger at his humiliation and his sudden decision to leave the castle and move to his second son. 15 Like Shakespeare's King Lear , Ran is the story of an vs conservatism old man of acknowledged estate, who wishes to Black Americans, retire and shed his responsibilities while holding on to his privileges. Early in the play, Lear invites his daughters, one by one, to declare how much they love him. The two elder daughters play his “game” and make their exaggerated claims: Sir, I do love you more than words can wield the matter; Dearer than eyesight, space , or liberty […], Myself an enemy to all other joys. And find I am alone felicitate in libertarianism, your dear highness’ love. Too Dependent? (1.1.

55-56 and 72-76) 16 Cordelia’s “I love your majesty/ According to my bond, nor more nor less” is not merely a refusal to play Lear’s “game” on vs conservatism the formal level, but it is received by Lear as a penetrating – in some ways, perhaps, a fatal – thrust into that area of the heart which he cannot defend: a father’s special love for too dependent a favourite daughter. 17 Kurosawa presents Hidetora’s attempt to convince his three sons that unswerving family loyalty results in invincible strength in dramatic action rather than language. Hidetora hands each son an arrow and makes each break it. Then he makes each son try to break, in vs conservatism, the same way, a tightly held bundle of arrows. The elder two play the joy hester biography, “game” in the expected fashion, but the youngest, Saburo, reveals both the silliness of the game and the fallacy of confusing rigidity with strength by breaking the whole sheaf against libertarianism his knee. As a result, like Cordelia, he forfeits his inheritance and is banished from the Women: Pressured Marriage Essay, family realm.

18 Christopher Hoile argues that the test of the three arrows. replaces the love test in King Lear , but it is not equivalent to it. Vs Conservatism? It emphasizes the breaking of Bangladeshi Women: Essay a bond not between the father and his sons but the bond among the sons themselves. Since primogeniture had already been established by the period Kurosawa has chosen, his Lear’s folly seems to be in vs conservatism, dividing his kingdom and expecting harmony rather than in expecting the continued love of his children for him7. 19 While these parallels demonstrate how Kurosawa sets up a visual dramatisation of what Shakespeare dramatises theatrically and among Essay verbally, there are significant character differences between the two fathers. Having been a warrior lord rather than a king, and having held his power through havoc wrought upon vs conservatism, the victims of his lust for supremacy, Hidetora is governed by Blood Black Americans Essay a distinctly masculine sense of what is proper ritualised behaviour on the part of libertarianism his sons. Pauline Kael, coming from a different angle, sees Shakespeare's King Lear as being “about primary emotions.

Lear […] stands for every abused parent figure who believed in biography, his children's show of love for him8”. 20 If she reduces the vs conservatism, complexity of the question which Lear himself poses by implication in asserting that he is “more sinned against than sinning” (3.2.59) her view does locate the essence of the Bangladeshi Women: Pressured Into Marriage Essay, dramatic action within the perceptions — and the self-perceptions — of Lear and vs conservatism as being more profoundly rooted within the underlying psycho-dynamics of the family. 21 The complexity of any comparison of Ran with Shakespeare’s play is advanced by Bangladeshi Women: Essay two narrative shifts. One is the fusion of vs conservatism two sources: the story of the 16th century Japanese father, Mori Motonari, and his three sons and Shakespeare’s play. Then there is Kurosawa’s sense that the characters in the King Lear narrative have to have a past to explain their relationships within the dramatic development of the film. In an interview before the New York premiere, Kurosawa insisted that his own dissatisfaction with Shakespeare’s King Lear arose from what he saw as a character deficiency in Lear, the absence of. any reflection on his past. If he begins in a position of such great power, and too dependent on technology then he goes mad because his daughters turn against him, there has to be a reason […] and the only reason must lie in libertarianism, his past behaviour. He must have been a terrible tyrant to get to where he is at the beginning of the play. And his daughters must have learned from him9.

22 But there are convincing arguments on the other side. James Goodwin maintains that “A principal consequence of the film’s creation of a detailed past of Bangladeshi Women: Pressured Marriage Essay misdeeds by the character is to make Hidetora not only less tragic but also less heroic than Lear10”. Janet Adelman has found much of the dramatic power of Shakespeare’s King Lear characters in their being. unlocalized in time and unencumbered by those details of libertarianism personal history that might serve to Blood Pressure among Black Americans, alienate their concerns from our own, they seem to emerge from some unknown part of ourselves, as if in a dream11. 23 Kurosawa’s insistence on giving his characters and libertarianism vs conservatism their motivations a past does shift substantially the dramatic focus of Ran . The action as it develops is consistently rooted in the past. In King Lear , the concentration of dramatic development, commencing with the king’s urge for his daughters to endorse formally their love for him, thrusts forward into the future. 24 Kurosawa has distributed attributes of Shakespeare’s King Lear characters among Hidetora’s sons and daughters-in-law as well as his servants and retainers.

There is a character figure for Shakespeare's Kent and The Effect of Motivation Performance Essays also for Lear's Fool. But there is no secondary Gloucester plot in Kurosawa's film, so the libertarianism, vicious vindictiveness which is brought to the Lear world by the illegitimate Edmund emerges at a less intense level in Hidetora’s second son, Jiro’s resentment of his elder brother’s priority inheritance. While Saburo (Hidetora’s youngest son) stands in for Lear’s youngest daughter, Cordelia, some of her quality emerges also in Sue, Jiro’s wife. Most of the destructive force unleashed against Hidetora comes not directly from stravinsky his sons, but from his daughter-in-law, the Lady Kaede (wife to Taro, the eldest son). Her implacable motivation arises from Hidetora’s earlier conquest of libertarianism her family castle. Her devouring and manipulative attraction to Jiro in Ran parallels Regan’s passionate sexual appetite for Edmund in King Lear . 25 Kurosawa has layered the conflicts on two levels so that the masculine consanguineous level of strife involves the sons – more evidently in igor stravinsky, war among themselves rather than with their father, “the realm of strife on a physical plane, of libertarianism vs conservatism battle for earthly dominion12”. 26 The feminine, non-consanguineous relations – of whom the theme, Lady Kaede is the essential dynamic source of hostility to Hidetora as surviving senior representative of the Ichimonji – operate on a spiritual level. Libertarianism? On the one hand, Lady Sue and her brother Tsurumaru bring an infusion of Buddhism into the drama while on the other, Lady Kaede has pledged to the ancestral spirits her undertaking to bring about the fall of the Ichimonji clan. 27 In an enthusiastic and biography thought-provoking essay which ranges over several aspects of the film, Sam Crowl has dealt in detail with the characterisations in Ran and the extent of their derivation from King Lear , but his over-riding concern is with what Kurosawa’s narrative achieves through “the gender reversal” of Lear’s progeny. He concludes that. In creating sisters-in-law rather than brothers-in-law and by libertarianism merging Cornwall with Edmund in his creation of Kaede [Kurosawa] managed to raise issues of female power and legitimacy that extend and transcend Shakespeare’s text13.

28 It is not clear why the merging of Cornwall and Edmund in Kaede leads to an extension and transcending of Shakespeare’s text when it amounts essentially to The Effect of Motivation Employee's Work Essays, a redirection away from Shakespeare’s dramatic focus. If “issues of female power” have been raised, important dimensions in the dramatic function within Shakespeare’s play are lost in the Kaede amalgam. The cruelties of Cornwall and Edmund emerge from different psychological roots, each interesting in its own right. Cornwall emerges as pathologically sadistic while Edmund’s viciousness arises from deep resentments, his exclusion from family inheritance and from legal and social position. Edmund’s particular significance in Shakespeare’s play is related to the central questions about nature, society and the family, and the powerful destructive forces that are unleashed from within it. Kaede’s destructive motivation is generated by libertarianism vs conservatism a desire for revenge on joy hester biography Hidetora. Vs Conservatism? Neither Cornwall nor Edmund have suffered at the hands of the characters they aim to on an Work Performance Essays, destroy. 29 Blindness, a major theme in Shakespeare’s play, emerges as a physical manifestation in Sue’s brother, Tsurumaru, who inhabits a small hut in which Hidetora and the Fool seek shelter. In Tsurumaru then there is a hint of the blinded Gloucester, but there are more dimensions to him. On the one hand, he more resonantly embodies aspects of Edgar, Gloucester’s legitimate son; on vs conservatism the other he seems, like Kyoami, Hidetora’s fool, to occupy an ambivalent zone between the masculine and feminine divisions in the film. 30 Both Shakespeare's Macbeth and King Lear depend upon self theme, an interaction between the world of nature and the world of man.

In Kumonosu-Djo the world of vs conservatism man is symbolised by the castle and its geometrical assertion, while the biography, world of nature is represented by the forest and the mist. The interaction between these elements of man’s architecture and vs conservatism the organic structures of the among Americans, natural world provides the unifying tension in the film. Kurosawa does not establish so distinct a polarity between the two worlds in Ran . Libertarianism? Here, the of Motivation on an Performance Essays, world of nature becomes a more complex dramatic presence, sometimes seeming to run parallel with – but indifferent to – the libertarianism, human drama, sometimes becoming a commentator on the action, sometimes an ominous reminder of the scale of human affairs in the greater universe within which the conflicts, alliances and calculating schemes of men and Blood Pressure among Essay women are played out. There are constant assertions of its presence: vistas of vs conservatism grass-covered hillsides, the boar hunt at the start of the film, the sounds of birds and insects accompanying – sometimes with a ringing insistence – certain moments in the action, the reliance, recurring shots of darkening storm clouds which punctuate and give cosmic dimensions to the gathering human drama. 31 Ran opens with four horsemen standing amid a splendid landscape of distant mountains, lush green hillsides under a wide sky. They stand the only visible intruders on the hillside, only the occasional switch of a horse’s tail giving life to the group as they continue to stand behind the credits on the screen, small against the wide backdrop of the natural world that Kurosawa’s camera holds before us with such an enduring impact. The stillness of this opening sequence is libertarianism, abruptly broken by the pursuit of several wild boars. A ceremonial hunt is in on technology, progress, the intercut camera shots capturing both the desperate attempts of the beasts to libertarianism vs conservatism, escape and the leading huntsman, Hidetora riding at speed, his bow drawn and the arrow held level. Hidetora’s concentration, his steady eye and sustained aim as he sits astride his galloping mount combine stillness and movement as a contrapuntal climax to The Effect on an Work Essays, the opening sequence of the film. There is no doubt that he will successfully shoot the boar.

32 It is not a lengthy sequence, but the dramatic contrasts between undisturbed natural grandeur and the disruptive pace of pursuit, and the seeming assumption that a running animal is legitimate quarry pose weighty questions not only about the natural world and the place of libertarianism human beings within it, but also about the High Blood Americans, legitimacy of man’s behaviour to libertarianism, others of his own species. 33 In Shakespeare’s King Lear there is a passing reference to hunting. (Goneril: “When he returns from hunting/ I will not speak with him”, 1.3.7), enough to remind us that it is a king’s sport and to hint at some complexity to the question of the too dependent, place of man in the natural world, and the impulses governed by animal nature in the behaviour of man. But it is vs conservatism, a small detail in the text and is often bypassed in the attention that other issues in the play demand. Why then does Kurosawa present the too dependent on technology, hunt with such a forceful impact at the the start of vs conservatism Ran ? 34 Grigori Kozintsev pondering on High Blood Black Americans Essay the textual threads in Shakespeare’s play has written of Lear’s new-found leisure activity, despite the brevity of its mention, as the raising of a major theme in the play: Lear begins his stay with Goneril by going hunting […]. The poetic space [of King Lear ] is populated with. enormous wild beasts, fierce predators. Vs Conservatism? There are two main spheres in Lear, the images of suffering human flesh and the figure of the wild beast. The hunt carries through the whole tragedy with ever-increasing pace […].“Come not between the dragon and his wrath” is one of the first threats. “The bow is bent and drawn” – and joy hester biography Kent is banished (and if he is caught “The moment is thy death”).

Kent tracked down Oswald; Edmund hunted Edgar; Cornwall snared Kent (in the stocks); they picked up Gloucester’s scent; encircled Lear; the footsteps looped like a hare’s – Lear’s footsteps from locked gates to barred doors; […]. Vs Conservatism? It is biography, a hunt where beasts are not caught, but men themselves turn into beasts. They do not destroy predators but become predators themselves – the whole race of man14. 35 Kozintsev has revealed the vs conservatism, hunting motif as an essential indicator of interaction in Shakespeare’s King Lear . Kurosawa by opening Ran with it clearly also places it in a position of dramatic primacy. 36 Attempts have been made to find common ground in the way nature is treated by Shakespeare and of Motivation on an Employee's Work Performance Kurosawa, namely by C. J. Bannon and Julie Kane15. But the placing of libertarianism nature and animal imagery in the film do not readily reflect that of The Effect on an Employee's Shakespeare.

David Jortner points out libertarianism, that what we may perceive to be the relationship between man and the animal world from a Western standpoint has limitations in the context of the film’s Buddhist philosophical universe. It is, he suggests, an over-simplification to see the boar as a metaphor for Hidetora’s progress from hunter to hunted: […] an alternative Buddhist reading of the same moment acknowledges the possibility that after his death Hidetora may truly become reincarnated in the form of a boar, the cycle of death and reincarnation is linked from the opening moments of the film to the final ones16. 37 While the Western Christian tradition views death as a removal to another sphere of existence separate from nature as manifested to earthly life, the belief systems of Shinto and Buddhism place the whole of biography man’s existence more firmly within the natural world. Kurosawa dramatises the boar hunt at the start of the vs conservatism, film as a powerfully memorable sequence which “lets [his] audience know that one of the underlying themes in joy hester, Ran will be the role and place of humanity within the natural world”. 38 The storm – that great chaos of nature which is at the centre of Shakespeare's play and which links the confusion of the vs conservatism, individual psyche with the Blood Americans, disorder of the universe – is not (in Ran ) a thunder storm, but a blistering gale-force wind which flattens the grass on the hillside under a bright sky. It is not Shakespeare's massive convulsion of universal turmoil, nor is libertarianism, it the central chaos of the film – which is unleashed in the battle scenes – but it is biography, a wind from which man has to take shelter. It effectively reminds us that humankind asserts its mark on the world by creating domains within which there is libertarianism, some protection from exposure to nature, whether they be the barest, least substantial shelters like Tsurumaru’s small hut, or massive castles protected like military fortresses. 39 All the castles have immense gates which effectively dwarf the igor stravinsky, soldiers who struggle to open them. The opening and closing of the gates make powerful visual statements about the vs conservatism, relationships governing human interaction, and they give emphatic punctuation to fear, trust, protection, rejection and defiance – as the implications in Shakespeare's play make clear.

When Hidetora arrives at Jiro’s castle he imposes his authority on the soldiers who guard the castle to pull back the joy hester, bars and heave open the massive creaking wooden gates. Libertarianism? Finding that Jiro is allied with Taro against him, Hidetora exercises his authority for joy hester the last time in commanding that the gates be opened for his departure. With their powerful weight of final rejection, the gates close behind Hidetora excluding him from the libertarianism vs conservatism, domain of man and leaving him to live as he can in the indifferent world of nature. 40 Yet despite the heaviness of the on an Employee's Work Essays, gates and the apparent finality of vs conservatism their closing, there begins to emerge in the film’s progression a flimsiness, an impermanence in these man-built fortresses. High Blood Black? Against the background of the massive world of nature as it is reflected in the film, man’s efforts to vs conservatism, proclaim himself through this architecture are revealed as ephemeral. Theme? An eco-critical reading of the film focuses attention on vs conservatism the contrast between fortresses with their “tribute to hubris and false hopes”17on the one hand, and, on the other, the power and seeming vastness of the physical landscape which give the film its dimensions of nobility. 41 Film is inevitably multi-layered, a document of High Blood Pressure Black Americans synchronous historical periods. In the case of Ran , there is the libertarianism, historical period in which the drama of the film is set and simultaneously as we view the film, we are observing the time in which the igor, film was made. Libertarianism Vs Conservatism? It is therefore relevant to consider the joy hester biography, issues that were current in the Japan of the 1980s and to see those as surfacing in Kurosawa’s later work. 42 Kurosawa’s landscape cinematography in Ran seems not merely to be a dramatic element in the film, but to assert itself with a wider elegiac relevance.

There emerges in the film’s treatment of landscape with all its grandeur a sense of its fragility: a drift from the libertarianism, initial placing of man in the natural world to a Japan being mobilised (as it was in the 1980s) as a modern prosperous economy. An observer of Pressured Into modern Japan, Alex Kerr, has noted: Sometimes when driving through the countryside I come across another mountain being bulldozed or a river being concreted over, and I feel a sense of fear. Japan has become a huge and terrifying machine, a Moloch tearing apart its own land with teeth of steel, and there is absolutely nothing anyone can do to stop it18. 43 The long-repressed jealousies and libertarianism resentments in the warring factions in Ran spill over into furious battle sequences filmed with fluency and with a sense of uncontrollable descent into chaos (which is what Ran means) immersed in a smokey darkness lit only by roaring flames that engulf the castles. Against the smoke-dimmed colours of this destruction Kurosawa has colour-coded his armies in The Effect of Motivation on an Employee's Work Performance, bright yellow, red and vs conservatism blue, colours which correspond with the costumes initially worn by the respective sons of Hidetora.

44 Hidetora is not Shakespeare's Lear. He is an aged warrior who has justified the devastation he has wrought as all warriors do – it is in the nature of war: and so what befalls him is in the nature of revenge. Yet just as there arises in Shakespeare’s play a sombre sense that the values and self theme stability of an ordered feudal world have given way to a modern set of vs conservatism rapacious priorities, so in Ran , the igor stravinsky, individual courage and libertarianism vs conservatism fighting skill of the samurai have been overtaken by technological advance. Joy Hester? The bow and arrows and the sword of the samurai have been superseded by muskets, weapons capable of more general and indiscriminate destruction. The muskets are but one step forward in the technology of weaponry which will lead, with an ineluctable logic to modern weapons of random, wholesale destruction, to. a world where every man-made structure is either burned or crumbles to dust, a world where fire and dust run through the areas that are marked as “civilized” evok[ing] images of the great devastation wrought by libertarianism the unleashing of nuclear weapons in Japan19.

45 The closing sequences of the among Americans Essay, film complete a journey from libertarianism ceremony and imposed order to chaos and destruction. The authority of the father over the sons, the insistence of igor old age to expect deference and libertarianism of the obstinate mind to defy the physical indications of exhaustion, all these are established in the opening sequences of the film. The lush green hills of the landscape, the repose of the horsemen immediately before the entrance of the igor, running boar, and the bright colours of the vs conservatism, clothing worn by Hidetora’s sons ultimately give way to a general opacity through which is glimpsed in colourless interiors, the hectic search, discovery and killing of Bangladeshi Women: Marriage Lady Kaede. 46 Yet counterpoised against the flames and libertarianism smoke of the igor picasso, burning castle and the headlong stampede of masses to their slaughter is the concentration of the libertarianism, tragedy in individuals, the reconciliation on rock-strewn ground of Hidetora and his son Saburo. The subtitled dialogue is not poetic, but the emotions are powerfully projected in gesture and movement. Joy Hester Biography? Kurosawa knows intimately the medium in libertarianism, which he is working and he visualises the power of emotions in action, in the relation of flesh and blood to earth. Theme? Where Shakespeare’s Lear says, “You do me wrong to vs conservatism, take me out of the grave” (5.1.38.), letting the depth of the feeling rest in the iambic rhythm and biography flow of the line, Hidetora’s lines are questions: “Why are you so cruel? Why pull me from vs conservatism my grave?”, and then he turns from them and tries frantically to igor, bury himself under the rocks. 47 Hidetora’s “fool” is with his master to the end and his weeping at the reconciliation of Saburo with his father is a poignant commentary on the feelings which underlie the silences punctuated with subtitled dialogue.

A single musket shot kills Saburo and on open ground devoid of any growth Hidetora’s final agony in libertarianism vs conservatism, being deprived of his son closes with “It grows dark”. Too Dependent? Hidetora’s words are a commentary on the draining away of colour from the closing sequence of the film. Behind a war-weary procession of soldiers is silhouetted the precipitous edge towards which the blind Tsurumaru will totter and from which he, as a representative of libertarianism nuclear-age humankind, will stumble back, fearful but unaware of The Effect Employee's Work Performance Essays his closeness to disaster. In letting fall his illuminated scroll depiction of the Buddha, Tsurumaru is stripped finally of all but the precariousness of vs conservatism chance survival. 1 Akira Kurosawa, Something Like an Autobiography , New York, Knopf, 1982, p. 23. 2 Kenneth Rothwell, A History of Shakespeare on Screen , Cambridge, CUP, 2001, p. 192. 3 Frank Kermode, “Shakespeare in the Movies”, inGerald Mast and Marshall Cohen (eds.), Film Theory and Criticism , Oxford, Oxford University Press, 1974, p. 322-332. 4 Peter Brook, public lecture, London, 20 Jan.

It was there that he first developed his interest in Shakespeare and Film. He later read for a doctorate in joy hester, this field at the Shakespeare Institute (University of vs conservatism Birmingham) and then returned to South Africa where he lectured in the English departments of two universities before being appointed Professor and head of the Department of English at too dependent on technology, the University of Fort Hare. Libertarianism versus Liberal and Conservative

abstract for libertarianism vs conservatism, essay On opening the MS. Reliance Theme. Copy of the Essay on Human Understanding, dated 1671, I found the following paper without title or date: it is an Epitome or Abstract of the Essay, drawn up by Locke himself;#0151;the same which was translated by Le Clerc, and published in the Bibliothèque Universelle of 1688, before the Essay was given to libertarianism the world. Lib. I. Reliance. In the thoughts I have had concerning the Understanding, I have endeavoured to prove that the mind is at libertarianism first rasa tabula . But that being only to remove the prejudice that lies in some men's minds, I think it best in this short view I design here of my principles, to pass by all that preliminary debate which makes the first book, since I pretend to show in what follows the reliance theme original from whence, and the ways we receive all the ideas our understandings are employed about in thinking. Lib. II. Chap. 1. The mind having been supposed void of all innate characters, comes to receive them by degrees as experience and observation lets them in; and we shall, upon consideration, find they all come from two originals, and libertarianism are conveyed into the mind by two ways, viz. sensation and reflection . 1st. It is evident that outward objects, by affecting our senses, cause in our minds several ideas which were not there before: thus we come by the idea of red and blue, sweet and stravinsky bitter, and whatever other perceptions are produced in us by sensation . 2nd. The mind, taking notice of its own operation about these ideas received by sensation, comes to have ideas of libertarianism, those very operations that pass within itself: this is biography another source of libertarianism, ideas, and this I call reflection ; and from hence it is we have the ideas of Bangladeshi Women: Into, thinking , willing , reasoning , doubting , purposing , c. From these two originals it is that we have all the ideas we have; and I think I may confidently say that, besides what our senses convey into the mind, or the ideas of its own operations about those received from sensation , we have no ideas at all.

From whence it follows#0151;first, that where a man has always wanted any one of vs conservatism, his senses, there he will always want the ideas belonging to that sense; men born deaf or blind are sufficient proof of this. Secondly, it follows that if a man could be supposed void of all senses, he would also be void of all ideas; because, wanting all sensation, he would have nothing to excite any operation in him, and so would have neither ideas of sensation , external objects having no way by igor, any sense to excite them, nor ideas of reflection , his mind having no ideas to be employed about. Chap. 2. To understand me right, when I say that we have not, nor can have, any ideas but of vs conservatism, sensation, or of the operation of our mind about reliance, them, it must be considered that there are two sorts of ideas, simple and libertarianism complex. It is Blood Americans Essay of simple ideas that I here speak; such as are the white colour of this paper, the libertarianism sweet taste of sugar, c., wherein the mind perceives no variety nor composition, but one uniform perception or idea; and too dependent of these I say we have none but what we receive from sensation or reflection ; the mind is wholly passive in them, can make no new ones to itself, though out of these it can compound others, and make complex ones with great variety, as we shall see hereafter; and hence it is that though we cannot but allow that a sixth sense may be as possible, if our all-wise Creator had thought it fit for us, as the five he has bestowed ordinarily upon man, yet we can have by no means any ideas belonging to a sixth sense, and that for the same reason that a man born blind cannot have any ideas of vs conservatism, colours, because they are to be had only by the fifth sense, that way of sensation which he always wanted. Chap. 3#0151;6. I think I need not go about to set down all those ideas that are peculiar objects of each distinct sense, both because it would be of no great use to give them by tale, they are most of igor picasso, them obvious enough to our present purpose, and also because they most of them want names; for, bating colours, and some few tangible qualities, which men have been a little more particular in denominating, though far short of their great variety, tastes, smells, and sounds, whereof there is no less a variety, have scarce any names at all, but some few very general ones. Libertarianism Vs Conservatism. Though the taste of milk and a cherry be as distinct ideas as white and red, yet we see they have no particular names; sweet, sour, and bitter, are almost all the biography appellations we have for that almost infinite difference of relishes to vs conservatism be found in Blood Pressure among, Nature. Omitting, therefore, the libertarianism vs conservatism enumeration of the simple ideas peculiar to each sense, I shall here only High Blood among Black Americans, observe that there are some ideas that are conveyed to vs conservatism the mind only by one sense, viz. colours by the sight only, sounds by the hearing, heat and too dependent cold by the touch, c. Libertarianism Vs Conservatism. Others again are conveyed into High Blood Pressure among Black Americans the mind by more than one sense, as motion, rest, space, and figure, which is but the termination of space, by both the vs conservatism sight and touch.

Others there be that we receive only from reflection; such are the ideas of thinking, and willing, and Bangladeshi Women: Pressured Marriage Essay all their various modes. And some again that we receive from all the ways of sensation , and from reflection too, and those are number, existence, power, pleasure, and pain, c. These, I think, are in vs conservatism, general all, or at least the greater part, of the simple ideas we have, or are capable of, and which contain in them the materials of all our knowledge, out of The Effect of Motivation Work Performance, which all our other ideas are made, and beyond which our minds have no thoughts nor knowledge at all. Vs Conservatism. Chap. 7. One thing more I shall remark concerning our simple ideas, and Bangladeshi Into then proceed to show how out of them are made our complex ideas; and that is, that we are apt to mistake them, and libertarianism vs conservatism take them to be resemblances of something in the objects that produce them in us, which, for the most part, they are not. This, though it lead us into the consideration of the way of the The Effect on an operation of libertarianism vs conservatism, bodies upon us by joy hester, our senses, yet, however unwilling I am to engage in any physical speculations, pretending here to give only an historical account of the understanding, and to set down the way and libertarianism vs conservatism manner how the mind first gets the materials, and by what steps it proceeds in Women: Marriage, the attainment of vs conservatism, knowledge; yet it is necessary a little to joy hester explain this matter, to avoid confusion and obscurity. For to discover the nature of sensible ideas the better, and discourse of the intelligibly, it will be convenient to distinguish them, as they are ideas or perceptions in our minds, and libertarianism vs conservatism as they are in The Effect of Motivation on an Employee's Work, the bodies that cause such perceptions in us. Whatsoever immediate object, whasoever perception, be in the mind when it thinks, that I call idea ; and vs conservatism the power to Pressure among produce any idea in the mind, I call quality of the subject wherein that power is.

Thus, whiteness, coldness, roundness, as they are sensations or perceptions in the understanding, I call ideas; as they are in libertarianism vs conservatism, a snow-ball, which has the power to produce those ideas in the understanding, I call them qualities. The Effect Work Essays. The original qualities that may be observed in bodies are, solidity, extension, figure, number, motion, or rest; these, in whatsoever state body is put, are always inseparable from it. Libertarianism. The next thing to be considered is, how bodies operate one upon another; and the only way intelligible to reliance me is by impulse; I can conceive it no other. Vs Conservatism. When, then, they produce in us the ideas of any of their original qualities which are really in them,#0151;let us suppose that of self reliance, extension or figure by the sight,#0151;it is libertarianism evident that the thing seen being at a distance, the impulse made on the organ must be by some insensible particles coming from the on technology object to the eyes, and by libertarianism vs conservatism, a continuation of that motion to the brain, those ideas are produced in us. For the producing, then, of the ideas of these original qualities in theme, our understandings, we can find nothing but the impulse and motion of some insensible bodies. Vs Conservatism. By the same way we may also conceive how the ideas of the joy hester biography colour and smell of vs conservatism, a violet may as well be produced in us as of its figure, viz. by a certain impulse on our eyes or noses, of particles of such a bulk, figure, number, and joy hester biography motion, as those that come from violets when we see or smell them, and by the particular motion received in the organ from that impulse, and vs conservatism continued to the brain; it being no more impossible to conceive that God should annex such ideas to such motions with which they have no similitude, than that He should annex the idea of pain to the motion of a piece of steel dividing our flesh, with which that idea has also no resemblance. What I have said concerning colours and Bangladeshi smells may be applied to sounds and tastes, and libertarianism vs conservatism all other ideas of bodies produced in us by the texture and motion of joy hester, particles, whose single bulks are not sensible. Libertarianism Vs Conservatism. And since bodies do produce in us ideas that contain in them no perception of self reliance, bulk, figure, motion, or number of parts, as ideas of warmth, hunger, blueness, or sweetness, which yet it is plain they cannot do but by libertarianism, the various combinations of these primary qualities , however we perceive them not, I call the powers in bodies to produce these ideas in us secondary qualities. From whence we may draw this inference, that the ideas of the Work Performance Essays primary qualities of bodies are resemblances of them, and their archetypes do really exist in the bodies themselves; but the ideas produced in us by these secondary qualities have no resemblance of them at all. There is nothing existing in the bodies themselves that has any likeness to our ideas. Libertarianism Vs Conservatism. 'Tis only in them a power to cause such sensations in us, and what is blue, sweet, or warm, in idea, is but the certain bulk, figure, and picasso motion of the insensible parts of the bodies themselves to which we give those denominations. Chap.

8#0151;10. Chap. 11. Having showed how the mind comes by all its simple ideas, in the next place I shall show how these simple ideas are the materials of all our knowledge, and how, from libertarianism vs conservatism, several combinations of them, complex ones are made. Though the mind cannot make to joy hester biography itself any one simple idea more than it receives from those two sole inlets, sensation and reflection , wherein it is merely passive, yet out of these being lodged in the memory, it can make, by libertarianism vs conservatism, repeating and several ways combining them, a great variety of other ideas, as well as receive such combinations by the senses. I shall give some few instances of this in those that seem the most abstruse, and then proceed to other things.

Chap. 12. That our eyes and touch furnish us with ideas of space, I think nobody will deny; we cannot open our eyes nor move our bodies, or rest them upon anything, but we are convinced of it. Having got the idea of the length of our span, or the height and breadth of the High Pressure among Essay door we usually go in and out at, or of the bulk of any body that familiarly comes in our way, we can repeat this idea in our minds as often as we will, and so increase that idea to what bigness we please by libertarianism, still adding the like or the double to the former; and by Bangladeshi Women: Pressured Marriage, this way, though sensation should supply us with no idea but of a foot, a yard, or a mile long, we could by this repetition attain and libertarianism vs conservatism form to ourselves the idea of immensity, which had its foundation still in that idea of space we received by our senses, and is nothing but the enlargement of that by repetition. I shall not here set down what I have at The Effect of Motivation Employee's Work large written, to libertarianism show the clear distinction between the idea of body and High Blood Pressure Americans Essay space, which some have endeavoured to libertarianism confound; it shall suffice only to on technology mention, that when distance is considered between any two things, abstract from any consideration of body filling up the libertarianism interval, it may most properly be called space #0151;when the distance is considered between the extremes of self, a solid body it may fitly be called extension . Vs Conservatism. The right application of these two terms would, I hope, help us to avoid some confusion, which sometimes happens in discourses concerning body and space. Stravinsky. Chap. 13. Vs Conservatism. Time and duration have a great conformity with extension and space. Had the original, from whence we have our idea of duration, been well considered, I imagine time would never have been thought mensura motû , since it hath truly nothing to do with motion at all, and would be the same it is, were there no motion at all.

He that will look into himself and observe what passes in his own mind, well find that various ideas appear and disappear there in train all the time he is waking, and this so constantly, that though he is never without some whilst he is awake, yet it is not one single one that possesses his mind alone, but constantly new ones come in and go out again. If any one doubts of this, let him try to keep his thoughts fixed upon any one idea without any alteration at all; for if there be any the least alteration of thought by addition, subtraction, or any manner of Bangladeshi Women: Into Marriage, change, there is then another, a new idea. Libertarianism Vs Conservatism. From this perpetual change of ideas observable in our minds, this train of new appearances there, we have the clear idea of succession. The existence of too dependent on technology, anything commensurate to any part of libertarianism vs conservatism, such succession, we call duration ; and the distance between any two points of duration, we call time . On An Work Performance Essays. That our ideas of time and duration have their original from libertarianism vs conservatism, this reflection is evident from hence, that whenever this succession of on technology, ideas ceases in our minds, we have no idea, no perception at all of vs conservatism, duration, and therefore a man that sleeps without dreaming perceives no distance betwixt his falling asleep and waking; but if dreams furnish him with trains of ideas, the perception of duration accompanies them, and that comes in to his account of time. Though mankind have made choice of the revolution of the sun and Bangladeshi Women: Pressured moon as the fittest measure of vs conservatism, time, because they are everywhere observable, and not easily discernible to be unequal, yet this is not because of Marriage Essay, any connection between duration and vs conservatism motion; for any other regular periodical appearances, that were common to all the world, would measure time as well, were it without any sensible motion. Chap. 14. Joy Hester Biography. And though the word time is usually taken for that part of duration which is taken up by the existence of libertarianism vs conservatism, natural things, or the motions of the Pressure among Black Americans heavens, as extension for that part of space which is commensurate and filled by body, yet the vs conservatism mind having got the idea of any portion of time, as a day, or a year, it can repeat it as often as it will, and so enlarge its ideas of duration beyond the being or motion of the usn, and have as clear an idea of the 763 years of the Julian period before the biography beginning of the world, as of libertarianism, any 763 years since; and from this power of repeating and Black Essay enlarging its ideas of duration, without ever coming to an end, frame to itself the idea of eternity, as by endless addition of ideas of space it doth that of immensity.

Chap. 15. The idea of number, as has been observed, is suggested to us by reflection, and all the ways of sensation we count ideas, thoughts, bodies, everything; and having got the idea of a unit, by the repetition and addition of one or more such units, make any combinations of numbers that we please. Chap. 16. Whereas the mind can never come to the end of these additions, but finds in itself still the power of adding more in the proportion it pleases, hence we come by the idea of infinite, which, whether applied to space or duration, seems to me to be nothing else but this infinity of number, only with this difference, that in number, beginning at libertarianism vs conservatism a unit, we seem to be at one end of the line, which we can extend infinitely forward. In duration we extend the infinite end of number or addition two ways from us, both to duration past and duration to come; and in space, as if we were in the centre, we can on every side add miles or diameters of the joy hester orbis magnus , c., till number and the power of libertarianism, addition fail us, without any prospect or hopes of coming to an end. That this is the idea we have of infinite, made up of additions, with still an inexhaustible remainder, as much as there is in number, and not in any positive comprehensive idea of infinity, I shall not, in the brevity I now propose to myself, set down the proofs of at of Motivation Essays large: let any one examine his own thoughts and see whether he can find any other but such an idea of infinity; in the mean time, it suffices me to show how our idea of infinite is made up of the simple ideas derived from sensation and reflection . Chap. 18, 19.

Chap. 20. Amongst the simple ideas we receive both from sensation and reflection , pleasure and pain are none of the most inconsiderable; they are our great concernment, and they often accompany our other sensations and thoughts. For as there are few sensations of the body that do not bring with them some degrees of pleasure or pain , so there are few thoughts of our minds so indifferent to us that do not delight or disturb us; all which I comprehend under the names of pleasure and pain . That satisfaction or delight, uneasiness or trouble, which the mind receives from any either external sensation or internal thought whatsoever, has an aptness to cause, increase, or continue pleasure in us, or to lessen or shorten any pain, we call good , and the contrary we call evil : upon these two, good and evil , all our passions turn, and by vs conservatism, reflecting on what our thoughts about them produce in us, we get the ideas of the passions. Thus any one reflecting upon the thought he has of the delight which any present or absent thing is joy hester apt to produce in him, has the idea we call love. For when a man declares in autumn, when he is eating them, or in libertarianism, the spring when there are none, that he loves grapes, he means no more but that the taste of High Pressure Black Americans, grapes delights him. The being and welfare of a man's children and friends producing constant delight in vs conservatism, him, he is said constantly to love them.

On the contrary, the picasso thought of the vs conservatism pain which anything present or absent is apt to produce in us, is what we call hatred. The uneasiness a man finds in himself upon the absence of anything whose present enjoyment carries the idea of delight with it, is that we call desire , which is greater or less as that uneasiness is more or less. Biography. Joy is a delight of the mind from the libertarianism vs conservatism consideration of the present or future assured possession of a good. Thus a man almost starved has joy at the arrival of relief even before he tastes it; and of Motivation on an Essays we are then possessed of any good when we have it so in our power, that we can use it when we please; a father, in whom the very well being of his children causes delight, is in libertarianism, the possession of that good always as long as his children are in Bangladeshi Essay, such an estate; for he needs but to reflect on it to libertarianism have that pleasure. Fear is an uneasiness of the mind upon the thought of future evil likely to befall us. I will not go over all the passions; they are not my business; these are enough, I think, to show us how the ideas we have of them are derived from sensation and reflection . Chap. 21. I shall only mention one more simple idea, and show how we come by it, and give some instances of some modifications of it, and then put an end to too dependent on technology this part of vs conservatism, simple ideas and The Effect Employee's their modes. Every man experiences in himself that he can move his hand or tongue, which before was at rest; that he can apply his mind to libertarianism other thoughts, and reliance theme lay by libertarianism, those that he has at present; hence he gets the idea of power . All power regarding action, we have, as I think, the ideas but of two sorts of action: viz. motion and thinking . Stravinsky. The power we find in ourselves to prefer this or that peculiar thought to its absence, this or that peculiar motion to rest, is that we call will . And the actual preference of any action to its forbearance, or vice versâ , is volition . The power we find in ourselves to act, or not to act, conformable to such preference of our minds, gives us the idea we call liberty . Chap. 22.

Having thus, in short, given an libertarianism vs conservatism account of the original of Pressure Black Americans Essay, all our simple ideas, and in the instances of some of them showed how, from certain modifications of them, the mind arrives at those that seem at first sight to be very far from vs conservatism, having their original in any ideas received from sensation, or from any operation of our minds about them, I shall now proceed to those that are more complex, and show that all the Women: ideas we have (whether of libertarianism vs conservatism, natural or moral things, bodies or spirits) are only certain combinations of these simple ideas got from Blood Americans, sensation or reflection , beyond which our thoughts, even when they ascend up into libertarianism the highest heavens, cannot extend themselves. The complex ideas we have may, I think, be all reduced to these three sorts, viz.#0151; Substances, Modes, and Relations. Chap. 23. That there are a great variety of substances in this world is past doubt to Bangladeshi Pressured Into Marriage every one; let us then see what ideas we have of those particular substances about which our thoughts are at any time employed. Let us begin with those more general ideas of body and spirit. I ask, what other idea a man has of libertarianism vs conservatism, body, but of solidity , extension , and mobility , joined together, which are all simple ideas received from igor picasso, sense. Perhaps some one here will be ready to say, that to libertarianism have a complete idea of body, the idea of substance must be added to solidity and joy hester biography extension . Vs Conservatism. But of him that makes that objection, I shall demand what his idea of self reliance, substance is? So likewise our idea of spirit is of a substance that has the power to think and to move body , from which, by the way, I conclude that we have as clear an idea of spirit as we have of body; for in one we have the clear ideas of solidity , extension , and vs conservatism mobility , or a power of being moved, with an ignorance of its substance , and in the other we have two as clear ideas, viz. of thinking and igor stravinsky picasso motivity , if I may so say, or a power of libertarianism vs conservatism, moving, with a like ignorance of its substance . For substance in too dependent on technology, both is libertarianism vs conservatism but a supposed but unknown substratum of those qualities, something, we know not what, that supports their existence; so that all the joy hester ideas we have of the substance of anything is an obscure idea of what it does, and not any idea of what it is. This further I have to add, that our idea of substance, whether spiritual or corporeal, being equally obscure, and our ideas of mobility and motivity (If I may for libertarianism vs conservatism, shortness' sake coin that new word) being equally clear in both, there remains only to compare extension and thinking . These ideas are both very clear, but the difficulty that some have raised against the notion of a spirit, has been, that they said they could not conceive an unextended thinking thing, and I, on the contrary, affirm that they can as easily conceive an unextended thinking thing as an extended solid. To make an self reliance theme extended solid there must be an idea of a cohesion of parts, and I say it is as easy to conceive how a spirit thinks, as how solid parts cohere; that is, how a body is extended; for where there are no cohering parts, there are no parts extra partes , and consequently no extension; for if body be divisible, it must have united parts, and libertarianism if there were no cohesion of the parts of joy hester biography, body, body would quite be lost, and cease to be.

He that can tell me what holds together the libertarianism vs conservatism parts of steel or a diamond, will explain a fundamental difficulty in natural philosophy. Bernouli, who has endeavoured to explain the coherence of the parts of all bodies by the pressure of the other, hath made two great oversights: 1st, That he takes no notice that let the igor pressure of any ambient fluid be as great as it will, yet that if there be nothing else to hold the parts of any body together, though they cannot be pulled asunder perpendicularly, yet it is demonstrable they may be slid off from one another as easily as if there were no such pressure; and the experiment of two polished marbles held together by the pressure of the atmosphere makes it evident to sense, since they can so easily by a side motion be separated, though they cannot by a perpendicular. Libertarianism Vs Conservatism. That he takes no care of the particles of the ether itself, for they too being bodies, and consisting of parts, must have something to biography hold them together, which cannot be themselves; for it is as hard to conceive how the parts of the least atom of matter are fastened together, as how the greatest masses, and yet, without this, we have as great a difficulty to conceive body as spirit, an extended as a thinking thing. But whether the notion of vs conservatism, a spirit be more obscure, or less obscure, than that of body, this is certain, that we get it no other way than we do that of the body; for as, by our senses, receiving the ideas of The Effect of Motivation, solidity , extension , motion , and rest , and supposing them inherent in an unknown substance, we have the idea of body; so by collecting together the simple ideas we have got by vs conservatism, reflecting on those operations of our own minds which we experience daily in ourselves, as thinking , understanding , willing , knowing , and the power of self reliance, moving bodies, and by supposing those, and vs conservatism the rest of the operations of our minds, to be coëxisting in some substance which also we know not, we come to have the idea of joy hester biography, those beings we call spirits. The ideas we have of understanding and power , which we have, from reflection on libertarianism what passes in ourselves, joined to duration , and all these, enlarged by our idea of infinite , gives us the idea of of Motivation, that Supreme Being we call God ; and to satisfy us that all our complex ideas contain nothing in them but the simple ideas taken from vs conservatism, sensation and reflection , we need but cast our thoughts on the different species of self theme, spirits that are or may be; for though it be possible there may be more species of spiritual beings between us and God upwards, than there are of sensible beings between us and libertarianism vs conservatism nothing downwards, we being at a greater distance from infinite perfection than from the lowest degree of being, yet it is certain we can conceive no other difference between those various ranks of angelic natures, but barely different degrees of understanding and power, which are but different modifications of the biography two simple ideas we got from reflecting on what passes in ourselves. As to libertarianism vs conservatism our ideas of joy hester, natural substances, it is evident they are nothing but such combinations of simple ideas as have been observed by sensation to exist together; for what is our idea of gold , but of a certain yellow shining colour, a certain degree of weight , malleableness , fusibility , and perhaps fixedness , or some other simple ideas put together in our minds, as constantly coëxisting in the same substance, which complex idea consists of more or fewer simple ones as his observation who made this combination was more or less accurate? And thus I think from sensation and libertarianism reflection , and the simple ideas got thence, differently combined and modified, we come by all our ideas of substances. Another sort of complex ideas there is, which I call modes , which are certain combinations of simple ideas, not including the obscure one we have of substance. Of these modes there are two sorts: one where the combination is made of simple ideas, of the same kind as a dozen or a score made up of a certain collection of units; the other sort of on technology, modes is, when the libertarianism vs conservatism combination is made up of picasso, ideas of several kinds, such are the ideas signified by the words obligation, friendship, a lie. The former sort, whereof I have above given several instances, I call simple modes ; the latter I call mixed modes . These mixed modes, though of an endless variety, yet they are all made up of nothing but simple ideas derived from sensation or reflection, as is easy for any one to observe who will, with ever so little attention, examine them. For example, if a lie be speaking an untruth knowingly, it comprehends the simple ideas#0151;1st, Of articulate sounds: 2nd, The relation of these sounds to ideas, whereof they are the marks: 3rd, The putting those marks together differently from what the ideas they stand for are in the mind of the speaker: 4th, The knowledge of the speaker, that he makes a wrong use of these marks: all which are either simple ideas, or may be resolved into them.

In like manner are all other mixed modes made up of simple ideas combined together. It would be endless, as well as needless, to go about to enumerate all the mixed modes that are in the minds of men, they containing almost the whole subject about which Divinity, Morality, Law, and Politics, and libertarianism vs conservatism several other sciences, are employed. Chap. 24. Chap. 25#0151;27. Besides the ideas, whether simple or complex, that the The Effect on an Work Essays mind has of libertarianism, things as they are in themselves, there are others it gets from their comparison one with another: this we call relation ; which is such a consideration of one thing as intimates or involves in it the consideration of another.

Now since any of our ideas may be so considered by us in one thing as to intimate and lead our thoughts to another, therefore all, both simple and complex, may be foundations of joy hester, relation, which however large it is, yet we may perceive hereby how it derives itself originally from libertarianism vs conservatism, sensation and too dependent reflection , it having no other foundation but ideas derived from thence. I shall not need to libertarianism vs conservatism go over the several sorts of relations to show it; I shall only remark that to relation it is necessary there should be two ideas or things, which being not both always taken notice of, makes several terms pass for the marks of positive ideas, which are in self reliance theme, truth relative: viz. great and old, c., are ordinarily as relative terms as greater and older, though it be not commonly so thought; for when we say Caïus is older than Sempronius, we compare these two persons in the idea of duration, and signify one to have more than the other; but when we say Caïus is old, or an old man, we compare his duration to libertarianism that which we look on to be the ordinary duration of men. Hence it is harsh to say a diamond or the sun is old, because we have no idea of any length of duration belonging ordinarily to them, and so have no such idea, to compare their age to Blood Pressure Americans Essay as we have of those things we usually call old. This is, in short, what I think of the libertarianism vs conservatism several sorts of joy hester biography, complex ideas we have, which are only these three, viz. of substances , modes , and relations , which being made up, and containing in them nothing but several combinations of vs conservatism, simple ideas received from sensation and reflection, I conclude that in all our thoughts, contemplations, and reasonings, however abstract or enlarged, our minds never go beyond those simple ideas we have received from those two inlets, viz. sensation and reflection. Chap. The Effect On An Essays. 28#0151;31.

Lib. III. When I had considered the ideas the mind of man is furnished with, how it comes by libertarianism vs conservatism, them, and of what kind they are, I thought I had no more to do but to proceed to the further examination of our intellectual faculty, and see what use the mind made of High Black Americans, those materials or instruments of vs conservatism, knowledge which I had collected in the foregoing book; but when I came a little nearer to consider the nature and igor picasso manner of vs conservatism, human knowledge, I found it had so much to do with propositions, and that words, either by custom or necessity, were so mixed with it, that it was impossible to igor stravinsky discourse of knowledge with that clearness one should, without saying something first of words and language. Libertarianism Vs Conservatism. Chap. 1 The ideas in men's minds are so wholly out of too dependent on technology, sight to others, that men could have had no communication of thoughts without some sign of their ideas.

The most convenient signs, both for their variety and quickness, that men are capable of, are articulate sounds, which we call words. Words then are signs of ideas; but no articulate sound having any natural connection with any idea, but barely of the sound itself, words are only signs (chap. 2) by voluntary imposition, and can be properly and immediately signs of nothing but the ideas in the mind of him that uses them; for being employed to express what he thinks, he cannot make them signs of ideas he has not, for that would be to vs conservatism make them signs of nothing. It is true, words are frequently used with two other suppositions#0151;1st. It is commonly supposed that they are signs of the self ideas in the mind of him with whom we communicate: this is reasonably supposed, because, unless this be so, the libertarianism speaker cannot be understood; but it not always happening that the ideas in the mind of the hearer always exactly answer those to which the speaker applies his words, this supposition is not always true. 2nd. It is stravinsky picasso commonly supposed that words stand not only for ideas, but for things themselves; but that they should stand immediately for things is impossible, for since they can be signs immediately of nothing but what is in the mind of the speaker, and there being nothing there but ideas, they stand for things no otherwise than as the ideas in the mind agree to them. Libertarianism Vs Conservatism. Chap. 3. Words are of two sorts, general terms, or names of particular things: all things that exist being particular, what need of general terms? and Into Marriage Essay what are those general natures they stand for, since the greatest part of vs conservatism, words in common use are general terms?

As to the first; particular things are so many, that the mind could not retain names for of Motivation on an Employee's Essays, them, and in the next place, could the libertarianism memory retain them, they would be useless, because the particular beings known to one would be utterly unknown to another, and so their names would not serve for communication where they stood not for an idea common to both speaker and hearer: besides, our progress to knowledge being by generals, we have need of igor stravinsky, general terms. As to the second, the general natures general terms stand for, are only general ideas, and ideas become general only by being abstracted from time and place and libertarianism other particularities, that make them the representatives only of individuals, by theme, which separation of some ideas which annexed to them make them particular, they are made capable of agreeing to several particulars: thus ideas come to represent not one particular existence, but a sort of things as their names, to stand for libertarianism vs conservatism, sorts, which sorts are usually called by the Latin terms of art, genus and species, of which each is supposed to have its particular essence; and though there be much dispute and stir about genus and species, and their essences, yet in truth the picasso essence of each genus and species, or, to speak English, of each sort of libertarianism, things, is nothing else but the abstract idea in the mind which the Bangladeshi Pressured Essay speaker makes the general term the libertarianism sign of. It is High Blood true, every particular thing has a real constitution by which it is vs conservatism what it is; and reliance theme this, by libertarianism vs conservatism, the genuine notion of the Into Marriage Essay word, is called its essence or being; but the vs conservatism word essence having been transferred from its original signification, and applied to the artificial species and genera of the schools, men commonly look on essences to belong to the sorts of things, as they are ranked under different general denominations, and in this sense essences are truly nothing but the abstract ideas which those general terms are by any one made to stand for. The first of these may be called the real , the second the nominal essence , which sometimes are the same, sometimes quite different one from another. Biography. Chap. 4. The nature and signification of words will be made a little more clear if we consider them with relation to those three several sorts of ideas I have formerly mentioned, viz. simple ideas, substances, and libertarianism vs conservatism modes, under which also I comprehend relations. 1st. The names of Employee's Work, simple ideas and libertarianism vs conservatism substances intimate some real existence from whence they are taken, as from their patterns; but the names of mixed modes terminate in the mind, and therefore I think it is they have the peculiar names of notions. Into Marriage. 2nd. The names of simple ideas and modes signify always the real as well as nominal essences; the names of substances seldom, if ever, anything but the nominal essence.

3rd. The names of libertarianism vs conservatism, simple ideas are of all other the least doubtful and uncertain. 4th. But that which I think of Bangladeshi Pressured Into Marriage Essay, great use to remark, and which I do not find anybody has taken notice of, is, that the names of vs conservatism, simple ideas are not definable, but those of all complex ideas are; for a definition being nothing but the making known the idea that one word stands for by several others not synonymous words, it cannot have place in any but complex ideas. It is of Motivation Employee's Work very manifest how both the Peripatetics, and even modern philosophers, for want of observing this, have trifled or talked jargon in vs conservatism, endeavouring to define the names of some few of the simple ideas, for, as to the greatest part of stravinsky picasso, them, they found it best to vs conservatism let them alone; for though they have attempted the definitions of motion and light, yet they have forborne to offer any definitions of the greatest part of simple ideas; and those definitions of light and motion they have ventured at, when strictly examined, will be found to be as insignificant as anything can be said to explain what the term red or sweet signifies; when a man can be found that can by words make a blind man understand what idea the word blue stands for, then also may he be able by a definition to make a man have the true signification of the word motion or light who never had it any other way. Reliance. 5th. The names of simple ideas have but few assents in linea pr?dicamentali , as they call it, because these ideas, not being compounded, nothing can be left out of any of them to make it more general and comprehensive, and therefore the name colour , which comprehends red and blue , c, denotes only the simple ideas that come in by the libertarianism vs conservatism sight.

Chap. 5. As to the names of mixed modes and relations, which are all of them general terms#0151;1st. The essences of their several sorts are all of them made by the understanding. Blood Pressure Black. 2nd. They are made arbitrarily and with great liberty, wherein the mind confines not itself to the real existence of any patterns. 3rd. But though the essences or species of mixed modes are made without patterns, yet they are not made at random without reason. Libertarianism Vs Conservatism. Not only signification, but shortness also, and despatch, is one of the great conveniences of Blood among Americans Essay, language; and hence it is suitable to the end of libertarianism vs conservatism, speech not only that we should make use of Bangladeshi Pressured Into Marriage Essay, sounds for signs of libertarianism vs conservatism, ideas, but also that one short sound should be the sign of many distinct ideas combined into Bangladeshi Pressured Into one complex one. Suitable to this end, men unite into one complex idea many scattered and independent ones, and libertarianism vs conservatism give a name to it where they have occasion often to think on such combinations and express them to others, and thus several species of mixed modes are made arbitrarily by men giving names to certain combinations of ideas, which have in on technology, themselves no more connection that others which are not by any denomination so united. This is libertarianism evident in the diversity of languages, there being nothing more ordinary than to find many words in one language which have none that answer them in another. Chap.

6. The names of substances signify only their nominal essences, and not their real essences, which two essences in substances are far different things, v.g. the colour, weight, malleability, fusibility, fixedness, and perhaps some other sensible qualities, make up the complex idea men have in their minds, to which they give the too dependent name gold; but the texture of the insensible parts, or whatever else it be, on which these sensible qualities depend, which is its real constitution or essence, is quite a different thing, and would give us quite another idea of gold if we knew it; but since we have no idea of that constitution, and can signify nothing by our words but the ideas we have, our name gold cannot signify that real essence. It is therefore by their nominal essences that substances are ranked into sorts under several denominations, which nominal essences being nothing but abstract, complex ideas, made up in various men of various collections of simple ideas which they have observed or imagined to co-exist together, it is plain the essences of the species of substances, and vs conservatism consequently the species themselves as ranked under distinct denominations, are of men's making. I do not say the substances themselves are made by men, nor the likeness and agreement that is to be found in them, but the boundaries of the species, as marked by distinct names, are made by men. But though men make the essences whereby the species of substances are limited and distinguished, yet they make them not so arbitrarily as they do in modes; for in substances they propose to themselves the real existence of reliance theme, things as the patterns they would follow, yet through their variety of skill or attention, their complex idea, made up of a collection of sensible qualities, signified by the same specific name, is in various men very different, the one putting in simple ideas that the other has omitted; but the real essences supposed of the species of vs conservatism, things must be, if there were any such, invariably the same. If the too dependent on technology first sorting of individuals into their lowest species depend on the mind of man, as has been shown, it is libertarianism vs conservatism much more evident that the more comprehensive classes, called genera by too dependent on technology, the masters of logic, are so, which are complex ideas designedly imperfect, out of which are purposely left several of vs conservatism, those qualities that are to be found constantly in the things themselves as they exist; for as the mind, to make general ideas comprehending several particular beings, leaves out High among Black Americans, those of libertarianism, time and place, and others that make them incommunicable to more than one individual, so, to make others yet more general that may comprehend different sorts, it leaves out these qualities that distinguish them, and puts into its new collection only such ideas as are common to several sorts; so that in this whole business of genus and species, the genus, or more comprehensive, is but a partial conception of what is in the species, and the species but a partial idea of what is to be found in each individual. High Blood Among. This is suited to the true end of speech, which is to denote by one short sound a great many particulars as they agree in vs conservatism, one common conception genera ; and reliance species, then, seem to me to be nothing but sorting of libertarianism, things in order to denomination, and the essence of each sort is nothing but the abstract idea to Blood among Black Americans which the denomination is vs conservatism annexed; for a little attention will teach us that to particular things nothing is essential, but as soon as they come to be ranked under any general name, which is the same as to be reckoned of any species, then presently something is essential to them, viz. all that is comprehended in the complex idea that the name stands for. This further is to be observed concerning substances, that they alone, of all the self several sorts of ideas, have proper names; to which we may add, that though the libertarianism vs conservatism specific names of self reliance theme, substances can signify nothing but the abstract ideas in the mind of the speaker, and so consequently the substances that agree to that idea, yet men, in libertarianism vs conservatism, their use of them, often substitute them in the room of, and would suppose them to on technology stand for, things having the real essence of that species, which breeds great confusion and uncertainty in their use of words. Chap. Libertarianism Vs Conservatism. 7. Words have a double use: 1st, to record our own thoughts; and for biography, this any words will serve, so they be kept constantly to the same ideas.

2nd. To communicate our thought with others, and for this use they must be common signs standing for the same ideas in vs conservatism, those who have communication together. In communication they have also a double use: The first of igor picasso, these is that which serves for the upholding of common conversation and commerce. Libertarianism Vs Conservatism. The philosophical use is to Bangladeshi Pressured Into Marriage Essay convey the precise notions of things, and to express in general propositions certain and undoubted truths, which the mind may rest upon, and be satisfied with in its search after true knowledge. In this last use of libertarianism, words they are especially liable to great imperfections of uncertainty and obscurity in their signification. Words naturally signifying nothing, it is Work Performance necessary that their signification, i. e. the precise ideas they stand for, be settled and retained, which is hard to be done: 1st. Where the ideas they stand for are very complex, and made up of a great number of ideas put together.

2nd. Where the vs conservatism ideas that make up the complex one they stand for have no connection in nature, and so there is no settled standard anywhere existing in nature to rectify and adjust them by. 3rd. Where the High Blood Black Americans Essay signification of the word is referred to a standard existing, which yet is vs conservatism not easy to be known. 4th. Essays. Where the signification of the vs conservatism word and the real essence of the thing are not exactly the same. The names of mixed modes are very much liable to doubtfulness, for the two first of these reasons; and the names of substances chiefly for the two latter. According to these rules, as well as experience, we shall find, First, That the names of simple ideas are the least liable to uncertainty, 1st, because they are simple, and so easily got and retained; 2nd, because they are referred to nothing but that very perception which things in nature are fitted to produce in us. Second. That names of mixed modes are very uncertain, because the too dependent complex ideas they are the signs of have no standing patterns existing in nature whereby to be regulated and adjusted; their archetypes are only in the minds of men, and therefore uncertain to libertarianism be known, and The Effect of Motivation Performance being very much compounded and often decompounded, are very hardly to be exactly agreed on and retained.

Where shall one find an assemblage of all the ideas the word Glory stands for, existing together? And the precise complex idea the name Justice is the sign of, is seldom, I imagine, settled and retained. Third, The names of substances are very uncertain, because their complex ideas not being voluntary compositions, but referred to patterns that exist, are yet referred to patterns that cannot at libertarianism all be known, or at least can be known but very imperfectly. 1st. As has been showed, sometimes the names of substances are supposed to stand for too dependent, their supposed real essences. Everything having a real constitution, whereby it is libertarianism vs conservatism what it is, this is apt to self be called its essence, as if it were the essence of a species; but whether it be or no, this is certain, that, it being utterly unknown, it is impossible to know in such a supposition or reference, of the name which any word stands for. 2nd.

Sometimes the libertarianism vs conservatism ideas the names of Bangladeshi Pressured Marriage, substances stand for are copied from the sensible qualities to be observed in bodies existing; but in this, which is their proper use, it is not easy to libertarianism vs conservatism adjust their significations, because the Pressured Into Marriage qualities that are to be found in substances out of vs conservatism, which we make their complex ideas, being for the most part powers, they are almost infinite, and one of them having no more right than another to be put into our complex ideas, which are to be copies of these originals, it is very hard by joy hester, these patterns to adjust the signification of their names, and therefore it is very seldom that the same name of any substance stands in two men for libertarianism vs conservatism, the same complex idea. Chap. 8. To this natural imperfection of words it is not unusual for men to add voluntary abuses, some whereof I take notice of; as, 1st, the using of words without any clear and determinate signification: this whole sects in philosophy and religion are frequently guilty of, there being very few of them who, either out of too dependent, affectation of singularity, or to cover some weak part of their system, do not make use of some terms which it is libertarianism plain have no clear and joy hester biography determinate ideas annexed to them. Besides these appropriated terms of parties, which never had any distinct meaning, there are others who use ordinary words of common language, without having in their minds any precise ideas they stand for; it is enough that they have learned the words that are common in the language of libertarianism, their country, which serving well enough to be produced in stravinsky picasso, talk, they dispense with themselves from being solicitous about any clear notions to be signified by them; and vs conservatism if men who have them often in their mouths should be examined what they mean by Reason or Grace , c., they would often be found to have in their minds no distinct ideas which these and the like words were the signs of. 2nd. Another abuse is inconstancy, or putting the same word as the igor sign sometimes of one idea, sometimes of another, in the same discourse.

There is nothing more ordinary in all controversies, where one can seldom miss to find the same sound often put for different significations, and vs conservatism that not only in the incidental parts of the discourse, but in those terms which are the most material in the debate, and on which the The Effect on an question turns. 3rd. To this may be added an vs conservatism affected obscurity, either in the use of The Effect of Motivation on an Work Performance Essays, old words, or the coining of new ones. To this nothing has so much contributed as the method and learning of the schools, where all has been adapted to libertarianism vs conservatism and measured by dispute. Too Dependent On Technology. This way of proceeding unavoidably runs all into multiplication and perplexity of terms. This perverse abuse of vs conservatism, language, having under the esteemed name of biography, subtility gained the reputation and rewards of vs conservatism, true knowledge, how much it has hindered real improvements the world is now satisfied. 4th. The next abuse of language is the taking words for self, things: this most concerns the names of substances, for libertarianism vs conservatism, men having feigned to themselves peculiar and groundless ideas, proportionably as they have thought fit to contrive or espouse some certain system of of Motivation Employee's Performance Essays, natural philosophy, have suited names to them, which, growing into familiar use, came afterwards among their followers to carry with them the opinion of reality, as if they were the libertarianism vs conservatism necessary and unavoidable marks of things themselves. Thus, substantial forms and self intentional species, and abundance of such other terms, have by their common and unquestioned use carried men into the persuasion that there were such things, it being hard for them to believe that their fathers and masters, learned men and divines, should make use of names that stood for libertarianism vs conservatism, fancies only, that never had any real being in joy hester biography, the world. The supposing words to stand for the real essences of substances is an libertarianism vs conservatism abuse which I have already mentioned. 5th.

Another more general, though less observed, abuse of words is, to suppose their signification so clear and settled that a man cannot be mistaken what ideas they stand for; and hence men think it strange to ask or be asked the meaning of their words, when yet it is plain that many times the certain signification of a man's words cannot be any otherwise known but by his telling what precise idea he makes any word the sign of. Blood Pressure Black Americans Essay. 6th. Figurative speeches and all the artificial ornaments of rhetoric are truly an libertarianism abuse of language also; but this, like the fair sex, has too prevailing beauties in too dependent, it to suffer itself ever to be spoken against, and it is in vs conservatism, vain to find fault with those arts of deceiving wherein men find a pleasure to be deceived. Chap. 9. That which has nourished disputes and spread errors in the world being chiefly the imperfection or abuse of words before mentioned, it would be of no small advantage to truth and quiet, if men would apply themselves seriously to a more careful and too dependent on technology candid use of vs conservatism, language, wherein I shall offer some easy and obvious cautions to those who have a mind to be ingenuous; for I am not so vain as to think of reforming so prevailing an abuse, wherein so many men imagine they find their account. Though I think nobody will deny, 1st, That every one should take care to too dependent on technology use no word without a signification,#0151;no vocal sign without some idea he had in his mind, and would express by it.

2nd. That the idea he uses a sign for libertarianism, should be clear and distinct; all the simple ideas it is made up of, if it be complex, should be settled. Blood Pressure Among. This, as it is necessary in all our names of complex ideas, so is vs conservatism most carefully to joy hester biography be observed in libertarianism, moral names, which being compounded and decompounded of several simple ones, our ideas are not right as they should be, and consequently our words are full of uncertainty and obscurity, and neither others nor we ourselves know what we mean by them till we have so settled in our minds the complex idea we would have each word stand for, that we can readily enumerate all the particulars that make it up, and resolve it into all its component simple ones. 3rd. These ideas must be accommodated as near as we can to the common signification of the word in of Motivation Performance, its ordinary use. It is this propriety of speech which gives the stamp under which words are current, and it is vs conservatism not for every private man to alter their value at pleasure. Joy Hester Biography. But because common use has left many if not most words very loose in their signification, and because a man is often under a necessity of using a known word in some with a peculiar sense, therefore it is often his duty to show the libertarianism vs conservatism meaning of Employee's Performance Essays, this or that term, especially where it concerns the main subject of discourse or question. This showing the meaning of our terms, to do it well must be suited to the several sorts of ideas they stand for. The best, and in many cases the only, way to make known the meaning of the name of a simple idea is by producing it by the senses. The only way of making known the meaning of the names of mixed modes, at least moral words, is by definition; and the best way of making known the meaning of the names of most bodies is both by showing and by libertarianism vs conservatism, definition together; many of their distinguishing qualities being not so easily made known by words, and many of them not without much pains and preparation discoverable by our senses. Chap.

10. What words signify, and how much we are to beware that they impose not on us, I have shown, it being necessary to be premised to our consideration of knowledge, the business of the next book; only, before I conclude this, I take notice of one ordinary distinction of words, because I think it gives us some light into Bangladeshi Women: Pressured Essay our ideas; vix. Abstract and concrete terms, concerning which we may observe, 1st, That no two abstract ideas ever affirmed one of another. 2nd. That simple ideas and modes have all of libertarianism vs conservatism, them abstract as well as concrete names; but substances only igor picasso, concrete, except some few abstract names of vs conservatism, substances in vain affected by the schools, which could never get into common use of corporietas and animalitas , c. The first of reliance, these seems to me to show us that two distinct ideas are two distinct essences that cannot be affirmed one of another. The latter carries with it a plain confession that men have no ideas of the real essences of the sorts of substances, since they have put into their languages no names for them. Lib. IV. The two foregoing books were of ideas and words, this is of knowledge. Chap. 1. The first chapter shows that knowledge is nothing but the perception of the agreement or disagreement of any two ideas.

This agreement or disagreement, for the clearer explaining of this matter, is reduced to these four sorts: Identity, Coëxistence, Real Existence, Relation. Libertarianism Vs Conservatism. 1st. It is the first and High Blood Pressure Black Americans Essay fundamental act of our understanding to perceive the ideas it has, to know each what it is, and perceive wherein it differs from any others; without this, the mind could neither have variety of thoughts nor discourse, judge or reason about them. Libertarianism Vs Conservatism. By this faculty the mind perceives what idea it has when it sees a violet, and knows blue is not yellow. 2nd. Our ideas of substances, as I have showed, consist in certain collections of single ideas which the igor stravinsky specific name stands for; and our inquiry, for the most part, concerning substances, is what other qualities they have; which is no more but this, what other ideas coëxist and are to be found united with those of our complex ideas. Thus, whether gold be fixed, is to inquire whether the libertarianism power of Pressured Into Marriage, abiding in the fire without wasting be an libertarianism idea which coëxists in the same subject with those ideas of The Effect on an Employee's, yellowness, weight, malleability, and fusibility, whereof my idea of gold is made up.

The 3rd sort of agreement is, whether a real existence out of my mind agrees to libertarianism vs conservatism any idea I have there. 4th. The last sort of agreement or disagreement of any ideas is in any other sort of relation between them. Thus, sweetness is not bitterness , is Bangladeshi Women: Pressured Into Essay of identity. Iron is susceptible of magnetical impressions , is libertarianism of coëxistence. God is , is of existence. Two triangles upon equal basis between two parallels are equal , is of relation. Chap. 2. According to the different way of perceiving the Black Americans agreement or disagreement of any of our ideas, so is the evidence of our knowledge different.

Sometimes the mind perceives the agreement or disagreement of libertarianism, two ideas immediately; thus it perceives that red is not yellow, that a circle is Bangladeshi Pressured Into not a triangle, that three is more than two, and equal to one and two; and this we may call intuitive knowledge . When the agreement or disagreement of any two ideas cannot be immediately perceived, but the mind makes use of the intervention of other ideas to show it, then (as the word imports) it is demonstration . Thus the mind not being able to vs conservatism bring the three angles of a triangle and two right ones so together as to be able immediately to perceive their equality, it makes use of some other angles to measure them by. To produce knowledge this way, there must be an intuitive knowledge of the agreement or disagreement of the intermediate ideas in each step of the deduction, for without that there can be no demonstration, the agreement or disagreement of the two ideas under consideration is not shown; for reliance theme, where any agreement or disagreement of any two ideas is libertarianism vs conservatism not self-evident, i. e. cannot be immediately perceived, there it will always need a proof to show it. This sort, which may be called rational or demonstrative knowledge , however certain, is not so clear and The Effect of Motivation on an Performance Essays evident as intuitive , because here the memory must intervene to retain the connection of vs conservatism, all the parts of the demonstration one with another, and too dependent be sure that none is omitted in libertarianism vs conservatism, the account, which in long deductions requires great attention to avoid mistake. Why demonstration is generally thought to on an Performance Essays belong only to libertarianism vs conservatism ideas of quantity, I shall not in this short epitome mention. These two sorts are all the knowledge we have of general truths.

Of the High Blood Essay existence of some particular finite beings we have knowledge by our senses, which we may call sensitive knowledge . Chap. 3. From what has been said, it follows: 1st. That we can have no knowledge where we have no ideas. 2nd. That our intuitive knowledge reaches not so far as our ideas, because the greatest part of them cannot be so immediately compared as to discover the agreement or disagreement we seek. 3rd.

Neither can rational and demonstrative knowledge make out the agreement or disagreement of all those of vs conservatism, our ideas wherein we fail of intuitive knowledge, because we cannot always find mediums to Bangladeshi Women: Pressured Into connect them intuitively together. 4th. Sensitive knowledge reaching no further than the actual presence of particular things to libertarianism vs conservatism our senses, is much narrower than either of the former. That which I would infer from this is, that our knowledge is not only too dependent on technology, infinitely short of the whole extent of beings, if we compare this little spot of libertarianism, earth we are confined to, to that part of the too dependent on technology universe which we have some knowledge of, which probably is, all of it, but a point in respect to what is libertarianism vs conservatism utterly beyond our discovery, and consider the vegetables, animals, rational corporeal creatures (not to mention the ranks and orders of spirits), and other things with different qualities suited to senses different from ours, whereof we have no notion at Employee's Performance Essays all, which may be in them, we shall have reason to conclude that the things whereof we have ideas are very few in respect of those whereof we have none at all. In the next place, if we consider how few, how imperfect, and how superficial, those ideas are which we have of the things that lie nearest our examination, and are best known to us; and libertarianism lastly, if we consider how few they are of those few ideas we have, whose agreement or disagreement we are able to discover, we shall have reason to conclude that our understandings were not proportioned to the whole extent of being, nor men made capable of knowing all things, but that it fails us in the greatest part of the The Effect of Motivation on an Essays inquiry concerning those ideas we have. Libertarianism. 1st. The Effect Of Motivation On An Employee's. As to identity and diversity, it is true our intuitive knowledge is as large as our ideas themselves; but, 2nd, on the other side, we have scarce any general knowledge at all or the coëxistence of any ideas , because not being able to discover the causes whereon the secondary qualities of vs conservatism, substances depend, nor any connection between such causes and our ideas, there are very few cases wherein we can know the coëxistence of any other idea with that complex one we have of any sort of substances, whereby our knowledge of joy hester, substances comes to be almost none at all.

3rd. As to other relations of our ideas, how far our knowledge may reach is yet uncertain; this I think, morality, if rightly studied, is capable of libertarianism, demonstration as well as mathematics. 4th. As to existence, we have an intuitive knowledge of our own, a demonstrative one of a God, and stravinsky a sensible one of some few other things. I shall not here, in this short compendium I am giving of my thoughts, mention those particulars which I have set down to show up the narrowness of our knowledge; that which I have here said may, I suppose suffice to convince men, what we know bears no proportion to that which we are invincibly ignorant of.

Besides the extent of libertarianism, our knowledge in respect of the sorts of things, we may consider another kind of its extent, which is in respect of its universality. When the ideas are abstract, our knowledge about them is general: abstract ideas are the too dependent on technology essences of species, howsoever named, and are the foundations of libertarianism, universal and eternal verities. Chap. 4. It will perhaps be said, that knowledge placed thus in the consideration of our ideas may be chimerical, and leave us ignorant of things as they really are in on an Work Performance, themselves, since we see men may often have very extravagant ideas; to which I answer, that our knowledge is real so far as our ideas are conformable to things, and no further. To be able to libertarianism know what ideas are conformable to the realities of things, we must consider the different sorts of ideas I have above mentioned. 1st. Simple ideas we cannot but know to be conformable to things, because the mind not being able to make any simple ideas to itself, those it has must needs be conformable to igor stravinsky picasso that power which is in things to vs conservatism produce them, which conformity is sufficient for real knowledge. 2nd.

All our complex ideas, but those of stravinsky, substances, are conformable to the reality of libertarianism vs conservatism, things; and this we may certainly know, because they being archetypes made by the mind, and not designed to be copies of anything existing, things are intended in our discourses and Pressure among Americans Essay reasonings about these ideas no further than as they are conformable to these ideas. 3rd. Our complex ideas of substances being designed to be copies of archetypes existing without us, we can be no further sure that our knowledge concerning any of vs conservatism, them is real, than the real existence of things has made it evident that such a collection of joy hester biography, simple ideas, as our complex one is made up of, can coëxist together; the reason whereof is, because not knowing the real constitution on which these qualities depend, we cannot but by experience know which of them are, and which are not, capable to exist together in the same subject; and if we put other than such that are capable to exist together into any complex idea, our knowledge concerning such an idea of libertarianism vs conservatism, substance will be only biography, concerning a chimera of our own, and not of any real being. Chap. 5. Libertarianism Vs Conservatism. According to this account of knowledge, we may come to discover what truth is, which appears to be nothing else but the joining or separating of signs according as things themselves agree or disagree. The joining or separating I here mean is, such as is made by of Motivation on an Work Performance, affirmation and negation, and is called proposition . Now the signs we use being of two sorts, viz. ideas and words; propositions also are of two sorts, viz. mental or verbal ; truth also is twofold, either real or barely verbal . Real truth in any proposition is when the libertarianism terms are affirmed or denied as the biography ideas they stand for agree or disagree, and as the ideas also themselves agree to their archetypes. Verbal truth is when the affirmation or negation is made according to the agreement or disagreement of libertarianism vs conservatism, our ideas, but the ideas themselves have no conformity with their archetypes. Chap. 6. Truth being for the most part conveyed to our understandings, or considered by us in propositions, it will be of moment to examine what propositions are capable to convey to our understandings the certain knowledge of self, general truths.

1st. Then I say, that in all general propositions, where the terms are supposed to stand for species constituted and determined by real essences distinct from the nominal, we are not capable of any certain knowledge, because not knowing that real essence, we cannot know what particular things have it, and so can never know what particular things are of that species. This frequently happens in propositions concerning substances in libertarianism, other things, not because in the species of other things there is no supposed real essence different from the nominal. 2nd. Biography. In all general propositions where the libertarianism vs conservatism terms are substituted only in the place of the nominal essence or abstract idea, and so the species determined by that alone, there we are capable of certainty as far as the agreement or disagreement of such abstract ideas can be perceived; but this also reaches but a very little way in substances, because the necessary coëxistence or inconsistency of The Effect Employee's Essays, any other ideas with any of libertarianism, those that make up one complex one of any sort of substances, is in very few cases discoverable.

Chap. 7. There are a sort of propositions which, passing under the title of maxims, are by some men received as innates, and by most esteemed as the foundations of knowledge; but if what we have said concerning self-evident or intuitive knowledge be well considered, we shall find that these dignified axioms are neither innate nor have any other self-evidence than a thousand other propositions, some whereof are known before them, and others altogether as clearly, and therefore they are neither innate, nor be the foundations of all our knowledge or reasonings as they are thought to be. Whatsoever is, is , and It is impossible for the same to be and not to be , it is The Effect of Motivation on an Employee's granted are self-evident propositions; but he that considers the nature of the understanding and the ideas in libertarianism vs conservatism, it, and that it is unavoidable for the understanding to self theme know its own ideas, and to know those to be distinct that are so, must needs observe that these supposed fundamental principles of knowledge and reasoning are no more self-evident than that one is one, and red red, and that it is vs conservatism impossible one should be two, or red blue: of these and the like propositions, we have as certain a knowledge as of those other called maxims, and a much earlier; and can anybody imagine that a child knows not that wormwood is biography not sugar, but by libertarianism, virtue of this axiom? That it is impossible for the same thing to Bangladeshi Pressured be and not to be. Intuitive knowledge extends itself to all our ideas in respect of identical agreeement or disagreement, therefore all propositions made concerning this sort of agreement or disagreement, whether in more or less general terms, so the libertarianism ideas they stand for Bangladeshi Pressured Into Marriage, be but known, are all equally self-evident. As to the agreement or disagreement of coëxistence, we have very little intuitive knowledge, and libertarianism therefore concerning that there are very few self-evident propositions and little talk of axioms. In the third sort of on technology, agreement, viz. Libertarianism. relation, the mathematicians have dignified several general propositions concerning equality with the title of axioms, though these have no other sort of certainty than all other self-evident propositions; and though, when they are once made familiar to the mind, they are often made use of to show the absurdity of wrong reasoning and theme erroneous opinions in particular instances; yet the libertarianism vs conservatism way wherein the mind attains knowledge, is not by beginning and setting out from igor stravinsky, these general propositions, but in the quite contrary method; it begins its knowledge in particulars, and thence gradually enlarges it to more general ideas. Chap. 8. Besides these there are other propositions, which are many of them certain, but convey no real truth to our knowledge, being barely about the signification of words. 1st.

Where any part of any complex idea is predicated of the name of that complex idea, such a proposition is only about the signification of the terms, and such are all propositions wherein more comprehensive terms are predicated of less comprehensive, as genera of species or individuals. 2nd. Wherever two abstract terms are predicated one of another, there the proposition carries no real knowledge in it, but is barely about the import of names. Were such trifling propositions as these shut out of discourses, the way to knowledge would be less perplexed with disputes than it is. Libertarianism Vs Conservatism. Chap. 9. Universal propositions, that have certain truth or falsehood in them, concern essences only. The knowledge of self, existence goes no further than particulars of our own existences; it is libertarianism plain we have such an picasso intuitive knowledge, that nothing can be more evident. Chap. 10.

Of the existence of God there is demonstration, for which we need go no further than ourselves for a proof, though God has given * * * * *. Chap. 11. The existence of all other things can be known only by libertarianism, testimony of our senses; our knowledge reaches in this as far as our senses, and no further. For the existence of any other being having no necessary connection with any of the ideas I have in my memory, I cannot from them infer the High Pressure among Black Americans necessary existence of any particular being, and can receive the knowledge of it only by the actual perception of libertarianism, my senses. Chap. 12.

For the improvement of our knowledge, we must suit our methods to our ideas: in Women: Into Essay, substances, where our ideas are but imperfect copies, we are capable of very little general knowledge, because few of our abstract ideas have a discoverable agreement or disagreement of coëxistence, and therefore in libertarianism vs conservatism, substances we must enlarge our knowledge by experiment and High Blood Pressure observation in particulars; but in modes and libertarianism relations, where our ideas are archetypes, and theme real as well as nominal essences of species, there we attain general knowledge only by views of our own abstract ideas; and in them our inquiries not being concerning the agreement or disagreement of libertarianism vs conservatism, coëxistence, but of other relations more discoverable than that of coëxistence, we are capable of greater advances in knowledge: and that which is proposed for Bangladeshi Pressured Marriage Essay, the improvement of it, is to settle in vs conservatism, our minds clear and steady ideas, with their names or signs, and then to contemplate and pursue their connections, and agreements, and dependencies: whether any method may be found out as useful in other modes as Algebra is in the ideas of quantity, for the discovery of their habitudes and joy hester relations, cannot, beforehand, be determined, and therefore not to be despaired of. Libertarianism. In the mean time, I doubt not but that Ethics might be improved to of Motivation Work Performance a much greater degree of certainty, if men, affixing moral names to clear and settled ideas, could with freedom and indifferency pursue them. Chap. 13. Libertarianism Vs Conservatism. Knowledge is not born with us, nor does it always force itself upon our understandings; animadversion and application is, in most parts of it, required, and that depends on the will; but when we have thoroughly surveyed, and to our utmost traced our idea, it depends not then on our wills whether we will be knowing or ignorant. Chap. 14.

The shortness of our knowledge, not reaching to all the concernment we have, is joy hester supplied by that which we call judgment, whereby the mind takes ideas to agree or not agree; i. Libertarianism. e. any proposition to be true or false, without perceiving a demonstrative evidence in the proofs. Too Dependent On Technology. Chap. 15. The ground on which such propositions are received for true, is what we call probability , and the entertainment the mind gives such propositions is libertarianism called assent , belief , or opinion , which is the admitting any proposition to be true without certain knowledge that it is so. The grounds of probability are these two.#0151;1st. The conformity of anything with our own knowledge, observation, or experience.

2nd. The testimony of others, vouching their observation and High among Black Americans Essay experience. Chap. 16. The variety of these in concurring or counter-balancing circumstances, affording matter for assent in several degrees of assurance or doubting, is too great to be set down in an extract. Chap. 17. Error is not a fault of our knowledge, but a mistake of judgment, giving assent to what is not true; the causes whereof are these#0151; First.

Want of proofs, whether such as may be or as cannot be had. Secondly. Want of ability to libertarianism vs conservatism use them. Thirdly. Want of will to use them. Fourthly. Wrong measures of probability, which are these four#0151; Doubtful opinions taken for principles. Received hypotheses. Predominant passions. Authority. Chap.

18. Reason, that serves us to the discovery of both demonstration and probability, seems to me to have four parts#0151;1st. The finding out of proofs. Self. 2nd. The laying them in their due order for the discovery of truth. 3rd. Vs Conservatism. In the perception of the more or less clear connection of the ideas in joy hester, each part of the deduction. 4th, and last of all, The drawing a right judgment and conclusion from the whole.

By which it will appear that syllogism is libertarianism vs conservatism not the great instrument of reason, it serving but only to the third of Bangladeshi Women: Into Essay, these, and that only, too, to vs conservatism show another's wrong arguing; but it helps not reason at all in Blood Pressure Americans, the search of new knowledge, nor the vs conservatism discovery of yet unknown truths, and the proofs of them, which is the chief use of that faculty, and not victory in dispute, or the silencing of wranglers. Chap. 19. Faith is by some men so often made use of in opposition to reason, that he who knows not their distinct bounds will be at High Blood Pressure among Black Americans Essay a loss in his inquiries concerning matters of religion. Matters of libertarianism, reason are such propositions as may be known by too dependent, the natural use of our faculties, and are deducible from ideas received from sensation or reflection. Matters of libertarianism vs conservatism, faith, such as are made known by supernatural revelation. The distinct principles and evidence of these two, being rightly considered, show where faith excludes or overrules reason, and where not. 1. Original revelation cannot be assented to contrary to the clear principles of our natural knowledge, because, though God cannot lie, yet it is impossible that any one, to reliance whom a revelation is made, should know it to libertarianism be from God more certainly than he knows such truths. 2. Igor Stravinsky Picasso. But original revelation may silence reason in any proposition, whereof reason gives but a probable assurance, because the assurance that it is a revelation from God may be more clear than any probable truth can be. 3. If original revelation cannot, much less can traditional revelation be assented to, contrary to libertarianism vs conservatism our natural clear and evident knowledge; because, though what God reveals cannot be doubted of, yet he to whom the revelation is too dependent not originally made, but has only received it by the delivery or tradition of other men, can never so certainly know that it was a revelation made by God, nor that he understands the words aright in which it is delivered to him.

Nay, he cannot know that he ever heard or read that proposition which is supposed revealed to another, so certainly as he knows those truths. Though it be a revelation that the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised, yet it not being revealed anywhere that such a proposition, delivered by a certain man, is a revelation, the believing of such a proposition to be a revelation is not a matter of faith, but of reason; and so it is if the question be whether I understand it in the right sense. According to these principles, I conclude all with a division of the sciences into three sorts#0151;1st. Fysikh , or the knowledge of vs conservatism, things, whether bodies or spirits, or of any of their affections in their true natures; the of Motivation on an Employee's Essays end of this is bare speculation. 2nd. Libertarianism. Praktikh , or the rules of operation about things in our power, and on an Work Performance principally those which concern our conduct; the end of this is action. Libertarianism Vs Conservatism. 3rd.

Shmiwtikh , or the knowledge of biography, signs, i. e. ideas and words, as subservient to the other two, which if well considered, would perhaps produce another kind of logic and vs conservatism critique than has yet been thought on. Essay: Health promotion and chronic kidney disease. What is health? According to the World Health Organization (WHO), health is ‘a resource for everyday life, not the objective of living. Health is a positive concept emphasizing social and libertarianism personal resources as well as physical capacities’ (WHO). Joy Hester Biography. Decades ago governmental officials of the world, agreed to libertarianism vs conservatism come together, despite of whatever conflicts, or political disagreements, to attain health for all the people of the world by the year 2000. They wanted citizens of the Bangladeshi, world to all have access to libertarianism basic, essential health care. The Alma-Ata of 1978 was the first international declaration professing the Blood among Black Americans, significance of public healthcare. Libertarianism. The Alma-Ata commences by stating that health, ‘which is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity is a fundamental human right and that the attainment of the highest possible level of health is a most important world-wide social goal” (WHO) The countries of the world, worked towards their goal but unfortunately did not achieve it by their targeted date.

On November 21st, 1986 thke first international conference on Health Promotion was held. Women: Marriage. Health promotion is defined as the process in which a person or people are encouraged to live healthier lifestyles. This promotion is expected to be holistic-physically, mentally and socially, so that everyone’s basic needs can be satisfied. A person cannot function in libertarianism vs conservatism this world if he doesn’t know where his next meal is coming from. How can he focus on his health, if he has no home? An unemployed man’s last thought is to get his annual physical done. Food, shelter, income and more were listed as prerequisites to The Effect of Motivation Essays health under the vs conservatism, Ottawa Charter for The Effect of Motivation Work Performance Health promotion.

Without basic needs being met a person cannot be complete physically, mentally and socially, which is part of the goal. According to libertarianism the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) there are seven principles of health promotion, which are as follows: i. Evidence informed practice. ii. Determinants of health. v. Pressure Among Black. Action across the continuum. vi. Cultural change. vii. Supportive environments.

viii. Libertarianism Vs Conservatism. Community participation (DHHS, 2012). Evidence informed practice seeks to ensure that the provision of healthcare is guided by the best researched and information currently available (DHHS, 2012). Purveyors of healthcare should understand the presenting problems and based on evidence, know what has been used to successfully treat the igor stravinsky, problem, Finally, the provider must know how to adopt the solutions to the current situation(DHHS, 2012) In health promotion, the evidence used, must be of excellent quality and be derived from a reliable source. It should take into account that cultural, moral, ethical and libertarianism spiritual values have a direct influence on what we do to improve health both as clients and as practitioners (DHHS, 2012). Women: Into. Finally, during each step health promotion there should be solid evaluation because this will ensure that valid information is added to the evidence base (DHHS). Determinants of vs conservatism, health are about the stravinsky, factors that affect health.

Typically, it involves looking at how and where people live and play as well as examining their work environment, and evaluating how these factors affect their health and behavior (DHHS, 2012). Equity means that healthcare is evenly and libertarianism vs conservatism fairly distributed to all persons across society. This is a mean of ensuring that the vulnerable and ‘at risk’ groups ‘ minorities – in joy hester society will also have access to modalities that can be life -saving (DHHS, 2012). Partnership in healthcare means working with different people or organization to improve the health and libertarianism well- being in self individuals as well as communities (DHHS, 2006). One such partnership is the nurse-client relationship in healthcare. Action across the vs conservatism, continuum adopts a myriad of strategies to create change in how healthcare is offered. Changes can start with the individual, then progress to the community and eventually changes in public policies.

According to the DHHS, ‘action across the continuum is reliance about looking for opportunities to develop a comprehensive approach to promoting health and well- being in our communities’ (DHHS, 2006). Cultural changes involve incorporating health promotions, in our health practice and services across the community. Libertarianism Vs Conservatism. Simply put, nurses and other practitioners ought to provide health promotion as part of the service that we provide in the community (DHHS, 2012). Supportive environments seek to ensure that patients and indeed the society in general are provided with healthy choices, for example fresh fruits and vegetables, so the consumer has options with regards to things that can increase his well-being (DHHS, 2012). Community participation require healthcare workers to have a good understanding of the among Black Americans, communities, groups and individuals with whom they work so that they can foster acceptance and participation of the health promotion principles( DHHS, 2012). PENDER’S HEALTH PROMOTION THEORY. Nola J. Pendler designed the Health Promotion Model to compliment the models of health protection.

Health promotion is directed at vs conservatism, increasing a patient’s level of well-being. The health promotion model describes the multi-dimensional nature of persons as they interact within their environment to pursue health. Her model focuses on individual characteristics and experiences, behavior-specific cognitions and affect, and reliance theme behavioral outcomes. Pendler identifies that each person has unique personal characteristics and experiences that affect subsequent actions. Health promoting behavior is the optimal outcome, which makes it the end point in the Health Promotion Model. These positive behaviors should result in improved health, which strengthens functional potential and improves quality of life in all stages of development. Libertarianism. The Health promotion Model makes four assumptions: 1. Individuals seek to actively regulate their own behavior. 2. Individuals progressively interact with and transform the environment as well as being transformed over time. 3. Health professionals, such as nurses, make up part of the interpersonal environment, which influences people through their life span.

4. Self-initiated reconfiguration of the person-environment interactive pattern is Women: Pressured Marriage essential to changing behavior. Health-promoting behavior is the action outcome desired to attain a positive health, and most favorable well-being, which enhances productive living. Picture the whole country of Cameroon that has a population size of 19,958,000. Based on vs conservatism, the Center of Disease Control, that and more people in the United States have Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). CDC stated that more than 20 million people in the United Sates may have CKD. That is joy hester biography about ten percent of the U.S. population. So, what is Chronic Kidney Disease? Chronic Kidney Disease is a condition in vs conservatism which your kidneys can not perform its normal function to the best of joy hester, its ability. The kidneys have many functions but one of its main roles is to libertarianism vs conservatism filter the waste or toxins from the blood that passes through it.

Filtration occurs in the nephrons, which are located in the cortex of the kidneys. There are millions of nephrons in The Effect of Motivation on an Employee's Work Performance each kidney to facilitate the process. The waste that is filtered out of the system is vs conservatism then excreted from the body in the form of self reliance, urine. Without the filtration process wastes from the libertarianism vs conservatism, bloodstream stays and accumulates in High Blood Pressure Americans the body and can be very hazardous to the individual’s health. As more and more toxins starts collecting in the body an individual may begin to experience symptoms. Chronic Kidney Disease is diagnosed by vs conservatism, the results of blood and urine samples. The blood tests checks the igor stravinsky, GFR (glomerular filtration rate) and the urine test checks for albumin or protein. The GFR tells how well your kidneys are filtering.

Your GFR should be 60mL ?? min’1 per 1.73 m2 or higher for normal function. If the GFR is below 60mL ?? min’1 per 1.73 m2 it means that the person has kidney disease. A GFR of 15mL ?? min’1 per 1.73 m2 or less means kidney failure. Protein is not normally found in urine because of its size, so therefore if found in the urine it indicates damage to the kidney. It is libertarianism vs conservatism of great importance to have urine and Bangladeshi Women: Marriage Essay blood test done annually. A person may have CKD and may not know it because the symptoms may not present itself until a great amount of damage is down. CKD can progress to Kidney Failure if left untreated.

Kidney Failure is when the kidneys stop working. At this point the individual either has to have a kidney transplant or have dialysis. There are numerous risk factors of CKD and some of them are genetics, high blood pressure, obesity, high cholesterol, kidney stone, kidney infection and many more. The two main risk factors for CKD are hypertension and diabetes and libertarianism vs conservatism will be discussed in this paper. African Americans, Hispanics and American Indians are the populations at highest risk for CKD and those two risk factors are prevalent amongst these cultural groups. Joy Hester Biography. It is said that CKD occurs in African Americans four times as much as in Caucasians. People with hypertension and diabetes should follow a healthy diet and keep a close eye on their blood pressure and glucose. Uncontrolled diabetes and libertarianism hypertension causes damage to organs in the body including the kidneys.

It is on an Employee's Work Essays said that 1 in 3 people with diabetes develop CKD and 1 in libertarianism vs conservatism 5 with hypertension develops it ( Their foods should be low in sodium and sugar. They should have lots of fruits and vegetables. Factors that increase the cultural group/population risk are non-compliance with medication regimen, smoking, BMI greater than 25, unhealthy diet, over use of of Motivation, NSAIDs and high consumption of vs conservatism, alcohol. Factors that decrease the risk for CKD are exercise, smoking cessation, constant monitoring of blood pressure and glucose, a diet low in sodium and among Black sugary foods and following medication regimen. Libertarianism. High blood pressure and High Black Americans diabetes may be inherited diseases but we can prevent it from occurring if we eat healthy and follow a regular exercise program. The African American population has always been one of the groups with the highest incidence rates but as of lately, this group’s rate has begun to drop. This could be because of the increase awareness and health promotion efforts of the government. CKD is un-bias to age, it occurs in the elderlies above age 60 but it also occurs in the younger population, mainly due to uncontrolled diabetes and hypertension.

The incidence rate of CKD in libertarianism vs conservatism adults 65years and older has doubled between 2000 and 2008. In the adults between ages 20 and 64, the incidence rate is less than 0.5 percent. The prevalence of CKD in adults 60 years and older went from 18.8 to 24.5 between 1988-1994 surveys and 2003-2006 surveys. During the same time frame, the prevalence of CKD between the ages 20-39 was 0.5 ( As stated above, CKD leads to kidney failure and according to CDC’s fact-sheet, in 2011 forty-four percent of new cases had a primary diagnosis of diabetes.

Twenty-eight percent of the new cases had a primary diagnosis of hypertension ( One of the objectives, listed on Healthy People 2020 for CKD is to reduce the proportion of the joy hester biography, U.S. population with chronic kidney disease. The baseline they have is 15.1 of the population for libertarianism vs conservatism the years 1999-2004. They are aiming to self reliance theme have this number reduced by 10%, which will be 13.6 of the population. Pathophysiology of libertarianism vs conservatism, Risk Factors for CKD. Chronic Kidney Disease has multiple risk factors, but we will be focusing on Blood Pressure Essay, Diabetes and Hypertension. Hypertension is a major cause of morbidity and mortality because of its association with coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease and renal disease. The blood pressure level which treatment is libertarianism indicated is reliance now 140/90 mm Hg. Increased systemic resistance, increased vascular stiffness, and increased vascular responsiveness to stimuli are central to vs conservatism the pathophysiology of hypertension. Morbidity and mortality attributable to hypertension result from joy hester biography target organ involvement. National surveys continue to reveal that hypertension is often not detected and when diagnosed, it is often inadequately treated.

Blood pressure is the libertarianism, combination of cardiac output and systemic vascular resistance. Cardiac output is usually elevated in younger people and joy hester biography decreases with age. This is due to increased systemic vascular resistance and vs conservatism increased stiffness of the vasculature. Stiffening of the aorta and elastic arteries increases the pulse pressure, this result in an increase in left ventricular afterload, and contributes to left ventricular hypertrophy. The widening of the pulse pressure with aging is a strong indicator of coronary heart disease. (Frey Wexler, 2013). The autonomic nervous system plays an important role in blood pressure control. (Leach, 2013) Increased release and enhanced peripheral sensitivity to norepinephrine can be found in hypertensive patients, and The Effect on an Essays also increased responsiveness to stressful stimuli. The renin-angiotensin system is also involved in some forms of hypertension. Elderly or black patients usually have low ‘renin hypertension. The renin-angiotensin ‘aldosterone system helps to regulate blood pressure.

When blood pressure falls, the kidneys release the enzyme renin into the blood stream. Renin then splits angiotensinogen; a large protein that circulates in the bloodstream, into pieces, one piece is angiotensin 1. Angiotensin 1, which is inactive, is libertarianism vs conservatism split into pieces by angiotensin- converting enzyme(ACE).One piece is angiotensin 11, a hormone , which is very active. Angiotensin 11 causes the muscular walls of joy hester, small arteries to constrict, increasing blood pressure. Libertarianism. Angiotensin 11 also triggers the release of the hormone aldosterone from the adrenal glands and antidiuretic hormone from the Employee's Work, pituitary gland. Aldosterone and antidiuretic hormone cause the kidneys to libertarianism vs conservatism retain salt. Aldosterone also causes the kidneys to too dependent on technology excrete potassium. The increased sodium causes water to be retained, which increases blood pressure and blood volume. Whenever a person experiences a change such as increased activity or a strong emotion, a transient increase in blood pressure occurs. One of the body’s compensatory mechanisms is triggered to counteract the change and libertarianism vs conservatism keep the blood pressure at normal levels. An increase in the amount of blood pumped out by the heart increases blood pressure, which causes dilation of blood vessels and an increase in the kidney’s excretion of salt and water which decreases blood pressure. Renal disease may progress slowly and becomes evident in biography later year.

Diabetes mellitus is a disorder in which the blood sugar is vs conservatism elevated because the self reliance theme, body cannot produce enough insulin to meet its needs. Diabetes damages blood vessels, which increases the risk of strokes, heart attack and vs conservatism kidney failure. Impaired insulin secretion and insulin resistance contribute to the development of pathophysiological conditions. Impaired insulin secretion is Bangladeshi Into a decrease in glucose responsiveness, which occurs before the clinical onset of the disease. Impaired insulin secretion is usually progressive, and involves glucose toxicity and lipo-toxicity. The progression of the impairment of libertarianism, pancreatic B cell production affects the long term control of joy hester, blood glucose.

Patients in the early stage after onset of the disease show an increase in postprandial blood glucose as a result of increased insulin resistance and decreased early phase secretion. Libertarianism. This in turn causes permanent elevation of blood glucose (Kaku, 2010). Some of the environmental risks for Diabetes are aging, obesity, alcohol drinking, smoking, lack of igor stravinsky, exercise. Libertarianism. Decreased activity is accompanied by biography, a decrease in muscle mass, induces insulin resistance, and is associated with the rapid increase in the number of middle age and elderly patients. The changes in libertarianism diet such as increased fat intake, and consumption of reliance, simple sugars, and libertarianism vs conservatism decrease of dietary fiber promotes obesity, and cause deterioration of glucose tolerance. The Effect Work Performance Essays. Diabetes may cause many long term complications as a result of the effect it has on blood vessels, which cause narrowing of the blood vessels, which in turn reduces the flow of blood to many parts of the body. This problem occurs when complex sugar- based substances build up in the vessel walls and cause thickening and leakage.

Fatty substances in libertarianism vs conservatism the blood also rise as a result of poor glucose control, and The Effect on an Essays the vessels accumulate plaque, leading to Atherosclerosis, which is libertarianism vs conservatism high risk factor for strokes and heart attacks. Over time, uncontrolled blood glucose and inadequate circulation can affect the brain, legs, eyes kidneys, and nerves. (Kaku, 2010). Blood Among Black. High blood pressure effects on the kidneys as mentioned can be very severe. It can cause the kidneys to malfunction, leading to kidney failure that can require dialysis or kidney transplant. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) has several risk factors including, but not limited to diabetes, high blood pressure (HTN), age 65 and older and obesity (Ernst, 2010).

Diabetes and HTN accounts for almost 70% of CDK incidence (Ernst, 2010). Had these patients managed their disease properly, it would not have progressed further. An important element in disease management is knowledge and this is where the nurse’s role as a teacher becomes important in the prevention and management of CKD (Ernst, 2010). There is an vs conservatism old saying that, ‘Prevention is too dependent better than cure’ and this is absolutely true with regards to CKD. To successfully prevent the vs conservatism, occurrence of CKD, patients need to know the too dependent on technology, cause of the vs conservatism, disease, the modes of transmission and too dependent on technology the identified risk factors (Levey et al, 2008). Vs Conservatism. Nurses as primary care givers have the enviable task of teaching primary, secondary and tertiary methods of prevention (Ernst, 2010). The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as a process of enabling people to increase control and improvement in their health (WHO, 1996). This definition apply aptly describes the too dependent, nurse’s interventions in the primary prevention of vs conservatism, CKD. Diabetes and HTN are the primary risk factors associated with CKD, and as such nurses has a key role in providing information to clients affected by igor stravinsky, these chronic illnesses, as well as to the public in general(Levey et al, 2008). Primary prevention seeks to prevent the disease – CKD – from occurring in these patients the libertarianism vs conservatism, first place.

Nurses should teach all their patients ‘ with HTN and diabetes ‘ about the impact of mismanagement of these diseases. They must be encouraging them to take their medication in self a timely manner as well as adopt a healthy lifestyle ‘ diet and libertarianism exercise. These measures, if employed by these patients would reduce the risk of them developing CKD (Levey et al, 2008). A further strategy that can be employed is screening. Joy Hester. Screening can be two fold; firstly persons with known risk factors can be screened for CDK and secondly the so call healthy people can be screened for the know risk factors ‘ especially amongst Blacks/African American, Native Indians and libertarianism vs conservatism Hispanics (Levey et al, 2008). Nurses should promote regular CDK screening for all their clients, since early detection can stop or significantly reduce the progression of the disease Corazon, 2010). Another intervention in primary prevention could include health fairs in targeted communities ‘ blacks/African American, Native Indians and Hispanics – where the disease is most devastating. Of Motivation On An Employee's Work. Teaching should include information about the risk factors, as well as the effects of CKD on the human body.

Participants should also be screened for the known/modifiable risk factors ‘ diabetes and HTN – because early detection means early intervention and vs conservatism prevention of CKD (Levey et al, 2008). Nurses can also use the internet to self-educate themselves about igor stravinsky risk factors and ways to reduce them; so that they can answer particular queries by clients and point them to reputable website for information (Levey et al, 2008). As the focus of healthcare moves away from curing diseases to prevention, nurse must take greater role in health promotion as a deterrent to disease manifestation (Levey et al, 2008). Secondary prevention seeks to identify factors that exacerbate or hasten the destruction of the kidneys. This population involves patients that have CKD and are being actively treated. Secondary prevention seeks to slow the disease progress or stop it altogether. There are two types of risk factors, those that are modifiable and those that are non-modifiable. Modifiable risk factors include increasing proteinuria, elevated or uncontrolled blood pressure, and poor glycemic control in diabetes, smoking, NSAIDS and dehydration (Levey et al, 2008). Critical nursing intervention in this phase again, involves patient teaching.

Nurses should inform their patients that the disease can be control at this juncture, but they have to be vigilant in controlling the risk factors and watching for sign of escalation (Levey et al, 2008). One of the vs conservatism, most significant intervention, is regular screening for proteinuria- protein in the urine ‘ as this is too dependent a tell tale sign of disease progression (Levey et al, 2008). If excess proteinuria is found, that would require immediate intervention by the primary care provider (PCP) (Levey et al, 2008). Clients, family and vs conservatism caregivers are also taught about maintaining blood pressure at on technology, normal levels. Hence, daily monitoring is required and patients should take their medication consistently. Increasing blood pressure levels will hasten the deterioration of the kidneys (Levey et al, 2008). Additionally, patient with diabetes are encourage to maintain good glycemic control. Medication must be taken regularly and PCP instructions followed.

Patient with early CKD must stop smoking, eliminate taking NSAID and stay well hydrated (Levey et al, 2008). Also important in vs conservatism patient teaching is diet and exercise. Bangladeshi Women: Pressured. Diet must include ‘limiting protein intake as it is contraindicated in patients with CKD’ (Levey et al, 2008). Thus, patient now empowered with knowledge, will be able to take control of their disease and improve their own health as recommended by the health promotion model (Levey et al, 2008). They will know the warning signs of escalation and know the corrective actions to take, whether it be calling the PCP or doing a simple blood test (Levey et al, 2008).

As Chronic Kidney Disease progresses, deterioration in the kidney function become self evident. The patient develops anemia, so they become tired more easily and libertarianism vs conservatism their arms, legs and faces may become swollen from excess fluid ‘ kidney unable to expel excess fluid (Corazon, 2010). Tertiary prevention therefore is aimed at maintaining homeostasis, preventing possible complication, ensuring comfort, supporting independent self care and providing information about the disease and treatment needs of patients (Corazon, 2010). A person suffering from kidney failure is most likely to igor retain excess body fluid which is manifested in vs conservatism swollen arms, legs and face. Nursing intervention for such a client is focus on on technology, maintaining homeostasis in the body and hence specific intervention may include monitoring the libertarianism, client’s vitals, heats sounds, lungs sound, pulse, blood pressure, pain, temperature, mentation and The Effect of Motivation on an Work Performance ability to respond (Corazon, 2010).

It is important that these vitals be monitored to detect any sudden changes in the client’s internal environment or signs of vs conservatism, complications (Corazon, 2010). It is indeed extremely serious if any changes occur, particularly with regards to fluid shifts, because this could signal the worsening of the person’s condition which can lead to heart failure (Corazon, 2010). People who suffer from kidney failure are generally very weak and get tired easily because they do not have enough have enough oxygen flowing throughout the picasso, body (Corazon, 2010). This is because; the diseased kidneys now have a compromised erythropoietin production, resulting in decreased red blood cells (Corazon, 2010). Vs Conservatism. Nursing intervention is geared towards ensuring the comfort of the patient; therefore the nurse should note reports of client weakness and fatigue as well as observe and Work Essays also note signs of anemia and difficulty in breathing (Corazon, 2010).

The nurse should correspondingly monitor the client’s level of consciousness and ability to perform tasks and provide assistance when necessary (Corazon, 2010). The nurse should nevertheless, let the client perform as much self-care as is possible and when general weakness has been established, she should limit venipuncture and the sites monitored for bleeding (Corazon, 2010). Anxiety often accompanies a CKD diagnosis and most patients view symptom escalation as alarming. To alleviate much of this fear, appropriate nursing intervention is to provide the necessary information about the disease process, dietary procedure, medical details, nutritional concerns and signs to monitor (Corazon, 2010). Patient teaching again is the nurse’s tool in helping the client to realize their full potential. Vs Conservatism. Nurses have various opportunities to transfer knowledge, a typical example being after dialysis. She will remind the patient of the risk involves in managing the self reliance, disease at this stage. The patients are encouraged to follow the diet recommended by the PCP, particularly protein reduction (Levey et al, 2008).

Water maybe restricted and most importantly HTN and diabetes most be controlled. Nurses could also introduce the patient to the nutritionist, who could help with nutritious meal that is libertarianism vs conservatism CKD compliant. She encourages the patent to Bangladeshi Women: Pressured Essay join the American CKD Association, where they could get support and encouragement from people with similar condition (Levey et al, 2008). Dialysis nurses and nurses in libertarianism general can have forums in the communities, which aims to reliance provide information about vs conservatism ways to control the disease and necessary steps to take in improving quality of life (Levey et al, 2008). These health teaching should be designed to stravinsky help patient, in taking greater interest in their healthcare and wellbeing, as well as providing the necessary information to help them to have a good quality of life when faced with this challenging disease (Corazon, 2010).
