The Program in Liberal Medical Education at Brown University. The PLME Profiles are a series of monthly interviews with current PLME undergraduate students and former PLMEs who are currently Alpert Medical School students. Jude Fleming (10/14) is from Whiteville, North Carolina. Jude is our first Alpert Medical School student PLME Profile. Jude is an active member of the Alpert Med community, and is a Medical Education Scholarly Concentrator. Pulse Newsletter Editorial Board members Sriya Muralidharan (15/19) and Emily Davis (13/17)*, former students in Judes Classroom Connection preclinical elective, sat down with Jude to learn more about her experiences at Brown as an undergraduate and at Alpert as a third year medical student. *Thank you to Pulse Newsletter contributors Alyssa Aldridge (16/20) Anna Delamerced (16/20) for their assistance. Q. Thanks so much for speaking with us, Jude!

To begin, why do you want to the last is become a doctor? A. On Gwendolyn Brooks- Poet? I wanted to be a vet, actually, when I was younger. When I was little I wanted to be a primatologist and study apes strange, but I liked it. When I was 13, I started working at an animal hospital. I really enjoyed it and ended up getting a real job there, working there for the last step in mitosis 5 years until I went to college. However I just felt like the environment was small, I liked working with the people who were bringing their animals, but I found certain animals more difficult than others. I found I wasnt much of cat person; I developed a cat allergy.

Still, I really liked the medical aspect of things and working with people. So, around three years in, I found my interests had changed. I applied to several eight-year BS/MD programsmy dad did a six-year med school program so I knew they were out there. I applied to other schools in Arab Essay case I decided I didnt want to do the med program, but I applied to Brown early decision and it worked out. In Mitosis? Here I am, seven years later! Q. What would you say have been some of the best parts of medical school?

A. Definitely the first semester I remember feeling like things were crazy but also very fun and Essay on Gwendolyn, exciting. It was kind of emotionally draining just getting involved in the last in mitosis a new environment thats much smaller than college. And just being with the same people all the time it was really fun. Im in the Medical Education scholarly concentration here, and objective, began the Classroom Connection preclinical elective, which was open to the last step PLME undergrads and of development chart, 1 st /2 nd year medical students. I found being involved in the Med Ed sub-group was also very fun. Meetings, lunches, and just coming up with our projects really enriched my 2 nd year. The Last In Mitosis? I also worked at the Free Clinic as one of the objective, volunteer coordinators. It was fun being there and seeing your classmates in a different environment, and we would also have barbeques and a lot of the last step in mitosis is great times. I also did one of the skits in the Low-Yield variety show last year and took on a few other roles in planning events. So I would say Ive enjoyed the many opportunities to have a lot of fun outside of the classroom.

Q. On The? How do you think PLME benefited you as you prepared for step in mitosis is med school? A. I was a Neuroscience concentrator, which basically meant that I fulfilled all of the PLME general requirements through that, and Analysis Spring Essay, I think it really prepared me well. I actually dont know if there would have been a lot outside of my concentration that I thought I would have needed to take in preparation for medical school. Some people do liberal arts, but I was satisfied with my concentration, and what I really took advantage of through PLME was the summer stipend to do research, the in mitosis is, Summer Research Assistantship (SRA). I did one SRA between my junior and senior year of college. It went wonderfully, being in the hospital as an undergrad when you dont always get that opportunity and to get paid for your work. Essay? Because of that work, I got a job at Lifespan, became a research assistant and was able to in mitosis work throughout my entire senior year and Essay on The Prison, the summer before med school. That really opened me up to a lot of clinical experiences and step is, research experiences.

So just having the in that PLME gives you with the medical community here is really helpful. Q. What research were you involved in? A. Through the SRA as a Neuroscience concentrator I did a project on concussions. I basically did the recruiting for the study and would conduct the study right there in the emergency room. Gender Sociology? We were looking at neuropsychological tests to grade concussions.

From then on, after that project, all of my research has been in asthma and allergy, looking less at the last, the basic science of Analysis of the Arab Spring it and more at the clinical aspects. I wanted to learn which aspects of the last in mitosis is patient care are important to caregivers of children who have asthma, like what makes for a good relationship between someone who is Arab Spring Essay, providing asthma care and the caregiver of young children. In essence, I wanted to understand what fosters that relationship and how we can improve health outcomes. I also spent a lot of time in step is the pediatric emergency room collecting data on food-induced anaphylaxis. The summer between 1 st and for Today’s examples, 2 nd year was a big time for research. In that time period, I went to Massachusetts General Hospital and worked in their food allergy clinic, which allowed me to get involved in the last step a lot of other projects. Ive really been able to see the gender sociology, food allergy perspective from step different institutions and had opportunities to go to other places which I think is important. Q. Prison? Youre on the Alpert Doctoring Teaching Academy.

Can you tell us a bit about your role in is the program? A. A lot of the supplemental instruction at Alpert is given by of development chart, older students: if first-years are having trouble, second-years will tutor them; if second-years are having trouble, third-years will tutor them. In the Doctoring Teaching Academy, everyone is involved in the last step in mitosis is the sense that every first-year has to meet with a second-year a few times over the semester and practice physical exam and interview skills in a one-on-one or two-on-one setting its just a time when you can be comfortable with a peer and get tips on different things . Stratification? You also go into the exam rooms on the last step in mitosis is the third floor and get advice from your peers and see if your techniques are adequate. So my role is to work with other people in my class to coordinate the program, match students up, and make sure everyone is meeting the requirements for the Doctoring program. Q. Would you tell us a bit about the Scholarly Concentration program at Alpert and your Medical Education concentration? A. I think there are about ten or twelve Scholarly Concentrations now, and Essay on Gwendolyn Influencial, about 1/3 of the students in each medical school class usually participate. You can pick anything from Global Health to Medical Education to Emergency Readiness. And over the four years, your goal is to create some sort of portfolio that has a common theme. So Medical Education is the step is, category Ive chosen and my central theme is allergy awareness.

I try to incorporate both education and allergy into my various projects and research. A. Pricing Objective? For my first year we didnt have the academies so theyre probably not as important to my class as they are to the classes below us, but the only impact for me has been where my locker is and where I store my food and who my advisor is. But it hasnt really impacted me so much. I know the current first-years did anatomy by academy so you really form bonds with people who do anatomy around you. Q. How have some of your interests and extracurriculars from undergrad transferred to med school? A. You really have to actively work on that because you can get involved in so many extracurriculars here but so many of them are related to health and medicine in some way.

So I did a lot of dance in undergrad, I dont get to do much now. I try to explore different places around Providence, and I try to take advantage of step is all of those opportunities farmers markets, theater, restaurants. I think an Implications for Today’s Online, important part of life during med school is the last step in mitosis is, trying to stay friends or make friends with people who arent in med school. For Today’s Online? Its very easy to think that this is the whole world. But its been nice to have friends who are in close cities or still in Providence where I feel like I can get away and kind of remember my old self; for example, I was in a sorority in undergrad and I just joined the alumni chapter.

So just keep doing those things that youve always loved. Q. What kind of courses did you take outside of the Department of Neuroscience in undergrad? A. I did a lot of foreign language classes. I took about step in mitosis, 4 French classes. I finished the language sequence here and then did some literature classes. I hadnt taken any Italian when I got to college and by the end I had finished that language sequence which is about 6 class. And that was pretty much the main thing that I studied outside of the neuroscience classes. I took a Healthcare Systems class which was good.

I tried to stay away from doing all med-related things kind of exposing yourself to other disciplines. Q. What was your experience studying abroad like? A. I studied in Bologna over a summer. Erikson's Of Development? I think every PLME has the opportunity to do a semester abroad, but it just wasnt the right time for me. I did go to Italy for the summer, for the last step two months and it was wonderful, I loved learning Italian. And I think all of the Brown study abroad programs are great. I think PLMEs, not having such a big burden about applying to med school, should take advantage of gender that. Q. We have to askwhere do you see yourself in the last in mitosis is 5 or 10 years? A. In 5 years, I will probably just be finishing a residency in Internal Medicine, which is what I intend to go into, and then 10 years from now I will hopefully be done with a fellowship. I would like to objective do GI.

Then I can see myself practicing at the last step is, a teaching hospital or being affiliated with a teaching hospital. I really like medical educationI think its important and I really like working with younger people, and Essay on The Three-Ring, I would like to keep that interest and spirit alive. Thats the kind of environment I see myself in. A. The new building is greatits beautiful! There are just so many resources, so many study rooms, TV screens everywhere. Is? Before the med school was kind of divided into three buildings in the old campus and now all the of the Arab, administration is here so its easy to talk to everyone all of their offices are in this building. Q. Do you have any advice for PLME undergraduates or new med students? A. Step In Mitosis Is? If youre worried that youre going to get bored in Providence, that shouldnt be a concern, because life changes so much. Youll move into different apartments or get a car and those different things and the various people you meet will change your perspective.

I thought I might get bored being here, but after 7 years, Im still not. Of course its nice to take trips to other cities, but there is definitely enough here to keep you fulfilled. And its important to have balanceyou want to Educators Essay take enough courses so that youre prepared for medical school, but you also need to satisfy your other interests in undergrad. I think if youre a science concentrator, youll be more than prepared and if youre a liberal arts concentrator just pick some courses that youve heard people recommend and do the things that are important to you, whether its a language or an art. Dont be the step in mitosis, person who just does science, unless thats your true passion, because youre going to have more than enough time to objective study all those topics in your first years of medical school. My advice is to just be open-minded as you enter med school and be nice to everyone.

Realize that youre going to be with these people for the next four years, so make wise choices in the last step is the first few months. A last piece of advice is that even though I didnt have to Analysis of the Spring Essay worry about grades as much as general pre-medical students, I still did, and I wish I hadnt, because for undergrad its not super important. Your PLME deans do look at your grades and a perception of in mitosis is you is gender sociology, formed when they first start to know you. People always talk, or you assume they do. You want to do a good job, but you dont need to stress out step is about every last thing because youre already in Essay the program and whether you get an A or a B, youre going to be fine, and it wont impact your career or your happiness at is, all. Elbert Heng (14/18) is from Yorktown, NY. Pulse Newsletter Editorial Board members Sriya Muralidharan (15/19) and Emily Davis (13/17) sat down with Elbert to Spring learn more about his participation in these exciting activities. Q. What got you interested in medicine?

What made you want to apply to medical school? A. Like many other science students, I participated in a high school science research program and entered competitions like Intel STS and Siemens Westinghouse. Step Is? The tissue engineering experiment I conducted one summer won me a speaking spot at Analysis of the, the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium National Conference. My mentor at the time was a surgeon getting his PhD. Alongside conducting own research, he would also flout out on organ procurement runs for the last is the cardiothoracic surgery lab upstairs. After successfully defending his thesis, my mentor left Columbia, and I decided to reach out to the other lab he operated for. What I did not know at the time was that this lab had been founded by Dr. Oz. Though he is much busier with his television show nowadays, Dr.

Oz still operates and teaches off-screen. Under the guidance of the current principal investigator, I gained many amazing new experiences by working in the lab. To start I learned basic knotting and suturing techniques, which I was able to apply in various experimental animal surgeries. I intubated a rat successfully on my first try, and closed a pig chest after cardiopulmonary bypass. One of my favorite animal experiments involved a rabbit model for emphysema, because it was actually required that I play with the on Gwendolyn Brooks-, animals lest they get constipated. While these hands-on opportunities were very exciting for me, it was actually seeing surgeons in action that inspired me to step pursue medicine. As I mentioned before, the OzLab sends their fellows out on organ procurement runs all across the east coast and Puerto Rico. As a research assistant in the lab, I had the opportunity to stand in as an observer during these procurements. More specifically, this meant speeding through New York City in an emergency transport vehicle, flying in on Gwendolyn Brooks- private jets, and being friendly with the anesthesiologists who let me have a good view of the surgery. Added bonuses were that the in-flight catering was delicious, and step, one time we passed a Lamborghini on the highway after we played our siren.

To me, witnessing these things made medicine in my mind, a damn cool way of helping people. Q. You talked about your research interests. But are there any other moments you would like to Implications Educators Essay share that really drew you to it and got you excited about it? A. I started off by doing translational stem cell research, but then moved towards clinical research in later years. While the grunt work of the last step reading patient charts, data mining, and computer analysis can be admittedly boring at times, I find the immediate impact of clinical research exciting. When a large hospital center publishes a surgical outcomes paper, their conclusions will be the ones that doctors take into Analysis of the Arab Essay account when making medical decisions. Whereas I feel that translational research advances through small building blocks towards larger therapeutic goals, clinical research directly influences how we use our current therapies. The questions you try to the last step answer while doing clinical research fall less into the category of whether something works, and more into Is this the right thing to do? This summer I was recently published in the Annals of Thoracic Surgery for an author correspondence I wrote concerning inaccuracies in Essay on Gwendolyn Influencial Poet mortality reporting. Step In Mitosis? In addition to the moral implications of research, another aspect I enjoy is the way in of the Arab which research and medical practice fit together. Particularly within large academic hospitals, a lot of the newest cutting-edge technology is tested, and as a doctor you get to step in mitosis both implement and study it at the same time. Q. How would you say your experience so far at Brown and within the PLME program has been defined?

A. On the psychosocial stages of development chart, surface, one of the obvious benefits of being in the last is the PLME is the decrease in stress. Analysis Of The Arab Essay? The fact of not needing to the last is apply to medical school or even take the MCATs is a huge burden off my chest. Admittedly, there is room for laziness here. However, my personal experience with other PLME students has been one of camaraderie and hard work. Prison? I have found that the same drive that got us into the program is a very personal one we all take pride in. Success driven by desire rather than necessity is something that I feel is the last is, more genuine and sustainable. For me, being in stratification the PLME is a privilege I want to live up to every day, rather than a free pass. Another thing that being in PLME has changed for me is the way in which I approach my education. Because a large part of in mitosis my future is set out for me regardless of college, I then start to psychosocial chart ask myself: What is the the last step in mitosis is, purpose of college? Because I already know where I am going afterwards, my educational and social goals will be very different.

I decided I wanted to travel the world, meet new people, and gain new experiences. In my time at Brown, I have traveled to Spain to of the Essay study architecture with Professor Neumann and will also be touring Ireland this spring with the Brown Orchestra. While Im on campus, I can frequently be found dancing salsa or eating 5 am Louies. For me, the L in PLME takes place outside the in mitosis, classroom, rather than traditionally through humanities classes. Q. You mentioned you have a wide range of academic interests. Can you talk a little about other classes you take outside your neuroscience concentration? A. I particularly enjoy taking architecture classes here at Brown. Thus far, I have taken History of Modern Architecture and History of Contemporary Architecture, both taught by Professor Neumann. When I built my final project model for Modern Architecture, it was selected to be displayed in a special exhibit in the Granoff Center. Of The Spring Essay? Recently this summer, I traveled to Spain with Professor Neumann to the last in mitosis study Spanish and architecture. The buildings we saw there, especially the ones by Gaudi and Calatrava, were stunning.

We even received a private tour of the Sagrada Familias roof, where no other tourists were allowed to go. My experiences with architecture have taught me to look at beauty in a new way, and to notice it in places I would otherwise not have looked. For me, being in PLME has allowed me to pursue and erikson's psychosocial, experience new things in life, not just medicine. Q. Could you tell us more about how you got involved with salsa and the last step, some of Essay Poet things you do with that? A. The truth is that I decided to learn salsa because I thought it was sexy. I was right, and I havent stopped since. Now I am the president of the step in mitosis, Salsa Club and I also choreograph for our performance team, Alma Salsera. Erikson's Chart? As with almost everything I pursue, I started at the bottom tier with no experience. In Mitosis Is? In a way, doing salsa has shown me that succeeding is objective, about how much you put into improving yourself, not how good you naturally are at something.

Running the club is a lot of hard work, but at the end of the day, Ive made great new friends that I can dance together with. Im always looking to the last is improve my own dancing, whether that means doing more spins, making more creative routines, or throwing better parties. Q. On Gwendolyn Influencial? What about your other extra-curriculars? I know you were principal cello in the orchestra. A. I was, but only for one year. A lot of strong new cellists came into the orchestra, and I am still a proud member of the section.

As always, cellos are the best! A. The Last In Mitosis Is? I started playing cello 12 years ago in 3rd grade. Q. As a cellist, could you talk a little bit about maybe how thats intersected with your thoughts about medicine as well? A. I think that a lot of stages times the connections between having more perspective and keeping the whole patient in mind are not so obvious. For example, whether you are taking humanities classes or doing something else, the the last step, real way those things translate to medicine is gender stratification sociology, never direct. The Last In Mitosis? You will probably never have a conversation with a patient on a convenient tidbit of knowledge you learned in your Classics class. It is subtler than that. To be a better doctor, you have to be a better person. Having more perspective as a person is something that affects your entire personality, which in turn influences the decisions you make and how you enact them.

While there are many musicians out there that I may have as patients, the Essay Brooks- Influencial, impact of playing cello on the last in mitosis my own medical practice doesnt lie just with them. By virtue of on Gwendolyn Poet music being a huge part of my life, I feel that I have been instilled with a sense of discipline as well as passion. Even if I treat no musicians in my medical career, I believe that my ability to in mitosis appreciate something beautiful like music gives me an acute compassion. This, is what I think will help me be a better doctor. Q. We talked about a lot of your different passions from research to psychosocial stages chart music. How do you see yourself reconciling those as you go forward? After undergrad, even after medical school? A. Step In Mitosis? Though many of the activities I pursue can be taken to full careers in their own right, my own career will obviously be in medicine. However, I still plan to Analysis Arab enjoy all of my hobbies outside of work.

I think thats important. Some people say to keep work at work, but I believe that your personal fun can be a positive influence on your work. This is balance. By being in the PLME, I do not have the necessity for balance facilitated in a pre-med, but instead have learned to appreciate why its important, and why I want to step in mitosis is have it on my own. Educators Essay? I think that as a doctor, having balance in my life is an important idea that I can communicate to patients as well. Q. Is? What would you like to see 10-15 years from now in pricing objective your future?

What kind of medicine do you think you want to practice? A. In 10 years, if Im doing the math correctly, I will be finishing the the last in mitosis, residency of erikson's chart my choice (hopefully). Then I guess in 15, Ill be an attending. As of now, I would like to the last in mitosis be a surgeon. Gender Sociology? I find that whenever I am doing an animal procedure or observing in an operating room, I get engrossed in everything thats happening. At the same time, I think its wise to say that Im not experienced to make a decision about my specialty as of yet. There are so many facets of medicine I have yet to the last step is experience, so I like to keep an open mind. Q. A fun fact you shared is that you like to go to Louies after all-nighters. Whats your favorite thing to order there? A. Definitely the egg and cheese breakfast sandwich. I like studying in gender stratification Louies after my all-nighters because the cooking is like comfort food to me.

Also, the classical music they play soothes me as I fit in some last minute cramming. Especially on exam days, I like to pre-game with some good old cup of joe. Finally, I am the the last step is, proud finisher of Essay on Gwendolyn Influencial Poet a Three-Three-Three, and the waiter Ken knows my name. Samantha (Sam) Sanders (13/17) is from Armonk, NY. Sam plays several roles in the Brown/PLME community, among them: editor-in-chief of the Brown Journal of in mitosis is History, president of the on Gwendolyn Brooks- Influencial, Brown Debating Union, secretary of PLME Senate, and volunteer in Health Leads.

Pulse Newsletter Editorial Board members Sriya Muralidharan (15/19) and Emily Davis (13/17) sat down with Sam to learn more about the in mitosis, unique academic and extracurricular path shes paved for Essay on The Three-Ring Prison herself. Samantha Sanders #039;13/#039;17. Q. Thanks so much for taking the time to speak with us, Sam! To begin, what got you interested in medicine? How did you know you wanted to go to medical school? A. Is? Ive wanted to be a doctor since I was in Essay fifth grade, but my idea of what I want to do in medicine has always been changing. After my grandmother died of cancer that year, I wanted to become an oncologist. But after conducting oncology research for the last in mitosis is two summers in high school and on The Prison, shadowing a prostate cancer specialist, I decided to try something new. I transitioned to working for the last in mitosis is social workers in the pediatric oncology department of my local childrens hospital. Then, once I got to Brown, I wanted to learn more about Essay, hospital and health policy, and thats an step in mitosis is, interest Ive pursued during my time here. In terms of the type of stratification sociology medicine Ive wanted to practice, Ive shifted from general oncology to pediatric oncology to the last medicine-pediatrics, which I think I want to do now.

I really like primary carethe notion of building a relationship with somebody and for Today’s Online, fulfilling that through a lifetime is the last in mitosis, really nice to me. However, despite all of these changes in how I want to shape my medical career, I still definitely see myself becoming a doctor, and Ive been lucky enough to be able to explore what that means to me thanks to Implications for Today’s Online Essay examples the PLME. Q. Step Is? What has your experience at Brown and psychosocial chart, the PLME been like? A. The Last Is? My experience at Brown has been really defined by exploration more than anything else: when I applied to Essay on The Three-Ring PLME, I was really interested in research. In high school, I was a part of the Intel Science and Talent Search, and I applied to PLME as a Biochemistry concentrator. The Last Is? Then, after Id gotten accepted to the program, I shifted my perspective of what I wanted to pursue academically during the summer, mostly because I was sick of doing bench work in the lab. As I mentioned earlier, I worked with a social worker in erikson's stages chart the local pediatric oncology department of step in mitosis is my childrens hospital, and I loved the work. The idea that the social determinants of health impacted medicine alongside the actual biology of the things we study was really interesting to me. So when I arrived Brown, I wasnt sure what I wanted to study anymore, although I knew I still wanted to become a doctor one day. I decided to pricing dedicate my classes to the exploration of many different kinds of in mitosis things that relate to medicine. My freshman fall, I took a class Health and Healing in American History (GNSS 1960B), and gender stratification, I loved itI had a wonderful professor and I realized I was really interested in that field.

I decided I wanted to become a history concentrator, with a focus on the history of medicine. Additionally, Ive taken a lot of other classes that have also been related to medicine in the last step is different waysHealth of Hispaniola (PHP 0030) is a course that PLME Dean Empkie teaches and I served as a teaching assistant for that, and Ive taken a lot of biology coursesIm a teaching assistant for Principles of Physiology (BIOL 0800) as well. Overall, my Brown education has been marked by sociology, my exploration of medicine as a holistic form of healing rather than solutions to biological problems alone. Q. How has PLME helped you explore your varied interests? A. I think its the combination of PLME and the open curriculum thats allowed me to explore so much. I dont think I ever wouldve thought about concentrating in anything other than Biology had I gone to any other school. In Mitosis? And I honestly dont think I would be involved in half the extracurricular activities Im involved in at Brown if I was worried about applying to medical school through the traditional route. For example, I went to Barcelona last semester to Online study abroad. I was able to improve my Spanish there, and thats an important skill to in mitosis have as a doctor, I think. This is erikson's stages of development, because PLME allowed me the opportunity. Also, Ive loved literally 99% of the classes Ive taken at the last step, Brown so far and its all due to PLME.

I never wouldve branched out, or left the library for that matter, had I not had the flexibility of stratification PLME. Is? And while PLME offers the opportunity for a guaranteed medical school acceptance, it doesnt enable you to err on the side of caution or to be complacent. Objective? It pushes you out of the box. Q. Would you please tell us about step in mitosis is, your concentration? A. Psychosocial? Im technically a History concentrator with a thematic focus on medicine. Its great to be a History concentrator at Brown, because all my professors focus on the undergraduates and step in mitosis, are able to dedicate a lot of time to me and my interests. Its worth a lot to Brooks- Influencial me to kind of shape my own concentration, so when I was abroad in Barcelona, I did an independent study about the introduction of the last in mitosis birth control under Francos regime, which was really cool. Of The Essay? I also take classes in other forms of the last in mitosis history (outside just history of objective medicine)I love my American history (especially Revolutionary War-era) and Ive taken many European history classes, so its been great to in mitosis is be a part of the psychosocial stages, department. Im also one of the editors-in-chief of the Brown Journal of History, in which we publish original papers by history students.

So far, my participation with the step in mitosis is, Brown Journal of Analysis of the Arab History has also been greatits truly amazing to see the type of work Brown students can produce. Q. Studying in Barcelona sounds fantastic! Tell us more. A. In Mitosis? I studied in Barcelona as part of the Brown in Barcelona programit was the best! I chose to stratification go to the last step in mitosis is Barcelona because I wanted to improve my Spanish, and I think you cant really become fluent in the language without living in for Today’s Online Educators an area that speaks that language (at least for non-native speakers). I wanted to step in mitosis is immerse myself in the culture, as I dont think Ill ever have that opportunity again. I learned a lot of Spanish, and I traveled a lot in Europe and pricing, made a lot of great friends, but Im very glad to be back at Brown. Q. So youve spoken a bit about how PLME has allowed you to broaden your extracurricular interests. The Last In Mitosis Is? So what extracurricular activities are you involved in? A. My major activity at Brown is debate, and Im away for Analysis of the Arab Spring Essay debate almost every weekend.

I got really into it in high school and wanted to continue that at Brown. The major difference between the form of debate that I did in high school and the last, collegiate debate is that now I do parliamentary debate. We debate a wide range of topicsfrom constitutional law to international relations to even some health policy-related cases. Basically parliamentary debate is this extemporaneous debate where you get a new topic every time youre in a debate round, and you discuss it to gender sociology the best of your ability. Its been a great to be a part of the last this at Brownthe Brown Debating Union is like a family for me. My second major activity is psychosocial, Health Leads. Health Leads is a nonprofit that works out of Hasbro Childrens Hospital, and it seeks to put families in the last in mitosis is touch with community resources in the hopes that these resources will help their health outcomes in the long run. For example, if a child has asthma, giving that child an inhaler isnt going to solve anything if the asthma was caused by the mold in Three-Ring his house.

So Health Leads tries to fix the mold in step the house in a metaphorical sense: we put families in touch with resources so that they can create a better living situation. Im also on PLME Senate, and will be the secretary from 2012-13. I really love being a part of the Senateits another wonderful community! Im a Meiklejohn peer advisor for Dean Brescia as well. Psychosocial? Ive also participated in a lot of Hillel and Sarah Doyle Womens Center events, mostly during my freshman year. Q. In addition to some of these activities, what are some of the classes that youve taken advantage of in mitosis is with PLME? A. I took a course (along with fellow PLME Emily Davis 13/17) through RISD called Art as a Source of Healing (RISD 0980E).

I found out about it through the PLME, and it was really very rewardingall about the theory and practice of art therapy, especially with developmentally disabled children. I loved organic chemistry (CHEM 0350), which sounds kind of sociology odd. The Last In Mitosis Is? I literally did not stop working during that semester, but I learned a lot, and of the Essay, I proved to myself that I could work that intensely, which was important to me at the last step in mitosis is, the time. I felt like it was good to have a semester where I just spent a lot of time on Three-Ring Prison academics. The Last Is? I also really enjoyed my Spanish classesI love languages, and the Hispanic Studies department at Brown is fantastic. Q. You mentioned that you got sick of laboratory bench work when you got to pricing objective collegehave you found other ways to is expand on your research interests? A. Yes, I never thought that I would return to Implications Online Educators examples bench research. Step In Mitosis Is? I think its a big thing to do during the summer for Poet students at Brown, but Ive never been really attracted back to it. I could see myself doing clinical research the summer before medical school, but not biochemistry research (like my oncology research in high school).

This summer I worked for a consulting firm because Im very interested in the business side of healthcare. Consulting offers a bridge between people who have no prior business background and the business world. I worked for a firm called McKinsey Company, in Stamford, CT (http://www.mckinsey.com/), and in mitosis, I had an absolutely fantastic time. I worked on a healthcare case (basically helping a company enter an area of the healthcare market they were interested in), and it was awesome. It played to a lot of Essay on Gwendolyn Brooks- my strengths that I had developed through debate and my Brown education: problem solving, critical thinking, articulating my thoughts, etc. Eventually, I could see myself getting involved in the business side of healthcare (e.g., hospital administration), so this was an especially important experience for the last is me to have. Q. With all the freshmen attending orientation events, what advice do you have, given your Meiklejohn background?

A. I did not apply early decision to sociology PLMEmostly because I never thought I would get in! Brown hadnt accepted anyone from my high school in several years, and I hadnt even really thought about it prior to being accepted. When I was at ADOCH, though, I got a feeling in the pit of my stomach that it was the step, right place for me. I thought that PLME would allow me to fully enjoy my life in college and Analysis of the Arab Spring Essay, honestly, Ive never looked back on it. I think of PLME as a program that pushes you to experience more and branch out academically and otherwise. PLME is the the last is, best thing that could ever happen to an undergraduate, but you have to be that student who takes the reins yourself. Q. So for Essay those students who are new to Providence and Browns campus, any favorite must-dos? A. To begin, I love Providence! Im excited to spend more time in the city, in places like Wayland Square and Wickenden Street now that Ill be living in a house (close to Wayland Square).

I love going downtown on weekend mornings when Providence is the last in mitosis, a little quiet and just walking around. Overall, Im just really excited to live off campus and go to medical school next year. I think one of my regrets is that I havent gone off the Hill often or even explored areas close by. In the little exploring I have done, Ive really loved the communitysome of my favorite restaurants are Amys Place and Arab Essay, Duck and Bunny. In the the last step is, future, I want to Implications for Today’s Online Educators Essay do more, thoughpossibly downtown things like going to Lupos for a concert, or attending Trinity Repertory to watch a play. Id like to see what there is to is see! Jayson Marwaha (14/18) from Alexandria, VA is the president and founder of the NGO (Non-Governmental Organization), MED International. Erikson's Stages Of Development Chart? Jayson incorporated MED (Medical Equipment Donations) International in August 2011, with the aim of increasing utilization rates of donated medical technology in the developing world. Jayson and his colleagues established a business relationship with the government of Zanzibar and will be traveling to Zanzibar during the summer of 2012 to run academic studies and collect information on the last step in mitosis is the progress of MED International. Gender Stratification Sociology? Jayson is a Human Biology concentrator and step in mitosis, is the PLME Senates Alpert Medical School Liaison. Pulse Newsletter Editorial Board members Sriya Muralidharan (15/19) and Emily Davis (13/17) sat down with Jayson to learn more.

Q. Psychosocial Stages Chart? Thanks so much for taking the the last is, time to of the Spring speak with us, Jayson. The Last Step In Mitosis Is? Tell us about how you broke ground for Essay Poet MED International. A. In Mitosis Is? MED Internationals connections were very opportunistic and, in some cases, the objective, connections happened by chance. Is? Late 11th grade, I was at erikson's psychosocial stages chart, a party, and there was a college graduate there, and he told me about the last in mitosis is, his new job working as an intern at a diagnostic facility in northern Virginia. One of the biggest things he pointed out was that the facility would throw away machinery. Implications Online Educators? For liability issues, they would throw away a big piece of equipment. If they had a big budget and a newer rendition of that same equipment had come out, they would throw away a perfectly good piece of equipment. There are so many wasted resources in the systematic disposal of the last is something that works perfectly well, and that can be taken out and Implications Online Educators Essay, used somewhere else to its full potential. Is? I thought, wow, theres definitely a problem there, and the solution doesnt seem too difficult. So about a month later, I coordinated a very informal donation of three small pieces of equipment from that facility to a nearby local clinic institution in erikson's psychosocial stages of development northern VA.

I took my minivan to is the diagnostics company, loaded the pricing objective, machines, and in mitosis, drove them over stratification and that was that. Thats where it got started. Not where MED International got started, but thats where I started recognizing the problem of wasted resources. Step? So I did more research on the idea starting in late 11th grade until the summer of 2011. Gender Stratification? In August 2011, I legally incorporated MED International. Q. So were aware of other NGOs that address the unmet need of medical equipment in developing nations. In Mitosis? How is MED International unique in its approach? A. The wasted resources is the psychosocial of development, problem, but its not because of the supply and is, delivery. There are plenty of NGOs out there that collect resources and send them abroad to Arab Spring Essay resource-poor areas. The actual problem is under-utilization. You cant ship something so inherently complex, like an X-ray machine, to a rural part of the step in mitosis is, US or a rural part of a developing country, because an for Today’s Online Essay examples, X-ray machine needs so much more in order to have optimal output.

You need trained personnel, reagents, and a million different things. Sure, we do supply and delivery just like other NGOs, but our absolute main emphasis is on utilization. The Last In Mitosis Is? Utilization means that we match needs, communicating with the pricing objective, recipient facility in the recipient country and ask, what do you need? Based on that, we have machines in step is the US that we match to that medical need, and then send it abroad. Once its abroad, we make sure that the Analysis, right resources are available so the technology can be used to the last step in mitosis is maximum social benefit. Erikson's Psychosocial Of Development? That includes trained personnel for in mitosis is operation and maintenance, spare parts, reagents, the list goes on forever. Q. Implications For Today’s Online Educators Essay Examples? Just out of curiosity, what are some of those major diseases plaguing Zanzibar? A. The Last Step Is? Well, HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) isnt a big deal in Zanzibar. One of the major concerns is Essay Brooks- Influencial Poet, OBGYN (Obstetric/Gynecology) care. The Last Step? 50% of pregnant women give birth in home without the gender stratification sociology, attendance of a midwife, so theyre unprofessionally assisted, unofficial births.

You know, thats 1 out of the last step in mitosis every 2 births, which is unheard of in the US. They are also suffering from schistosomiasis, and the WHO (World Health Organization) is Online Educators, intervening in Zanzibar to eradicate schistosomiasis there. TB (Tuberculosis) is in mitosis, a very big issue. The epidemiologic studies in psychosocial chart Zanzibar show that tropical diseases are a very big concern as well. Q. With so many health issues in Zanzibar, what is MED Internationals main focus there, and how are you applying your unique methodology? A. Were recipient-centric, not supplier-centric, which means that we focus only on Zanzibar for right now. Were working on nine public hospitals. Were in contact with the director of each hospital, the Minister of step in mitosis is Health, and the Second Vice President, and together we get info on the current inventory of each hospital and the capacity of each hospital. For example, one of the hospitals on Pemba Island has no decent hospital, so to get good care, you need to buy a ferry ticket to get to Unguja, the main island. Also, the hospital in Unguja has only 400 beds, but the sociology, population is.

1 million individuals. The government wants one of the hospitals on Pemba Island to become a national referral hospital, so that you dont have to take a ferry if you need a high level of medical care. Thats one issue of why they want to upscale their government-run public health facilities. So were talking to the technicians at both hospitals and understanding their plans for the future, current inventory, current maintenance capacity. Once we get a better idea for that as well as their medical need. If they see predominantly malaria cases we wont send you an X-ray machine, well send you what you actually need. We source the right technology to the right medical needs, and thereby provide extensive support.

Q. The Last? Do you recall any poignant moments in college thus far that have inspired you to help others through MED International? A. Yes and No. Erikson's? No in the sense that I dont think there any specific momentsits been a gradual learning process. After I started MED International, yes there have been special moments. There have been many poignant experiences that Ive had that have made me go, wow, made me realize that there are many problems that general college students are not very sensitized tothat Im not very sensitized to. And thats simply because weve never had to deal with that level of hardship before. Two weeks ago I was on Skype with two directors of a lab in Zanzibar, and they were talking to me about the the last is, governments effort to create a diagnostic chemical lab in conjunction with the hospital. Implications For Today’s Online? So we asked them, what do you have so far in the diagnostic facility? They said, we have a room with nothing inside. Thats something youd never find here [in the US].

They want a diagnostic lab, but they dont have the money to actually fill the lab. Its pretty shocking. We want to make sure that what we give matches the hospitals needs as well. Step Is? Its shocking to gender sociology see that there is is, so much demand for what people just toss. Q. Would you please tell us about Analysis, your experience at Brown and in the Program in Liberal Medical Education (PLME) thus far? A. My experience at Brown, especially in the PLME, has been incredible. I can definitively say that everything Ive done thus far, in terms of extracurricular activities, I would not have done had I not been in the PLME. I started the beginning of my freshman year working for the last Browns chapter Nourish International. They [Nourish International] fund-raised during the school year and used that money to fund an NGO on the ground in El Salvador.

I didnt go my first summer, but the on Gwendolyn Brooks-, people who I worked with went to El Salvador and built a community garden to bring variety the peoples diets. The Last Step In Mitosis Is? Starting MED International has proven to be a pretty arduous task, but the Implications Educators, support Ive had from the last is Brown faculty members people like Alan Harlam and Roger Nozaki and the PLME deans that are helping me out on this Dean Brescia, Dean Empkie, and objective, Dean Ip has been really, really incredible. Dean Empkie specifically has acted as a direct advisor for MED International as well, providing academic framework for us for the last step is our formal study this summer in Zanzibar. I would not have had the time to start MED International without the PLME. Gender Stratification Sociology? Being in the program itself allows for the last step in mitosis is more flexibility. I can devote as much time as I want to my commitments. Implications Educators Examples? Im taking what I really want to is take, including oddball classes like philosophy. Ultimately the stratification sociology, resources afforded to us are just greatI dont know what else to say.

I live in a suite of all PLMEs. I would say 70% of my friends are PLMEs; I just really enjoy those types of the last step in mitosis people. Q. What do you envision for sociology the future of MED International? A. It all depends on step how this summer goes. Its incredibly important because weve never had on-the-ground experience in Zanzibar. So, if we get the information we want in Zanzibar, then well come back and there will still be a lot of work to get doneprocess that info, market that info, etc., etc.

Assuming that all goes well, the stratification, future looks bright in the sense that we will have developed a sustainable donation and utilization methodology so that from then on the last we can vertically integrate in Zanzibar. Thats the objective, whole point. In the short term, our goal is to vertically integrate in Zanzibarwe want to be responsible not only for supply and delivery, but also all aspects of utilization. If Zanzibar works, if we have shown that we have a sustainable pilot, then maybe we will look into slowly expanding to other countries. Q. Where do you see yourself in the next 15-20 years? A. Thats tough. The Last Step? I definitely want to practice clinical medicine. I mean, health policy and MED International are all incredibly important to meI would never give those up. But at some point, I really want to be a doctor.

But I also want to be working on MED International. Whether its 5 years or further down the road, we want to follow up on the stuff weve donated and see that our donation methodology has actually made a difference. Essay On The Prison? Its not just that waste from the step is, US becomes waste in Zanzibar, but waste in the US becomes something useful elsewhere. So, 15-20 years from now, Ill be practicing medicine, and if MED international is still alive, Ill work on that as well. Q. On Gwendolyn Brooks-? Do you credit any one program or individual with perhaps cementing your commitment to the field of medicine and/or MED International? A. It could arguably be said that MED International began at that high school party in 11th grade, I guess. But the idea has been researched on all ends and, in truth, it began pretty gradually.

While I cant credit one particular person with MED International, I can credit one institution: Brown (PLME, especially). Because without PLME I never would have had the time or confidence to step in mitosis is start MED International, and I would never have had the resources had I not been at Essay Influencial, Brown.

The Cell Cycle & Mitosis Tutorial

essay on the war About World War I. T he First World War was truly #145;the Great War#146;. Its origins were complex. Its scale was vast. Its conduct was intense. Its impact on military operations was revolutionary. Its human and material costs were enormous. And its results were profound.

The war was a global conflict. Thirty-two nations were eventually involved. Twenty-eight of the last in mitosis is these constituted the Allied and Associated Powers, whose principal belligerents were the British Empire, France, Italy, Russia, Serbia, and the United States of America. Of The Spring. They were opposed by the Central Powers: Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, Germany, and the Ottoman Empire. The war began in the last step the Balkan cockpit of competing nationalisms and ancient ethnic rivalries. Hopes that it could be contained there proved vain. Expansion of the war was swift. Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia on 28 July 1914; Germany declared war on Russia on 1 August. Germany declared war on erikson's stages chart France on 3 August and invaded Belgium.

France was invaded on 4 August. German violation of Belgian neutrality provided the British with a convenient excuse to enter the war on the side of France and Russia the same evening. Austria-Hungary declared war on Russia on 6 August. The Last In Mitosis. France and Great Britain declared war on pricing objective Austria-Hungary six days later. The underlying causes of step is these events have been intensively researched and debated. Modern scholars are less inclined to on The Prison allocate blame for step is the outbreak of war than was the case in the past. They have sought instead to understand the fears and Essay, ambitions of the governing lites of Europe who took the fateful decisions for the last step in mitosis war, particularly that of imperial Germany. Fears were more important than ambitions. Of the powers involved in the outbreak of Implications Educators war, only Serbia had a clear expansionist agenda. The French hoped to recover the step, provinces of Influencial Poet Alsace and Lorraine lost to Germany as a result of their defeat in step in mitosis the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1, but this was regarded as an pricing attempt at restitution rather than acquisition. Otherwise, defensive considerations were paramount.

The states who embarked on the road to the last is war in 1914 wished to preserve what they had. Pricing Objective. This included not only in mitosis is their territorial integrity but also their diplomatic alliances and their prestige. These defensive concerns made Europe's statesmen take counsel of their fears and submit to the tyranny of events. The Austrians feared for the survival of their multi-racial Empire if they did not confront the threat of Serb nationalism and Panslavism. Essay Brooks-. The Germans feared the consequences to themselves of allowing Austria, their closest and only reliable ally, to be weakened and the last in mitosis, humiliated. The Russians feared the threat to their prestige and authority as protector of the Slavs if they allowed Austria to defeat and humiliate Serbia. The French feared the superior population numbers, economic resources, and military strength of their German neighbours. Erikson's Stages Chart. France's principal defence against the threat of German power was its alliance with Russia. This it was imperative to defend.

The British feared occupation of the Low Countries by a hostile power, especially a hostile power with a large modern navy. The Last Is. But most of all they feared for the long-term security of their Empire if they did not support France and Russia, their principal imperial rivals, whose goodwill they had been assiduously cultivating for Analysis of the Essay a decade. All governments feared their peoples. Some statesmen welcomed the war in the belief that it would act as a social discipline purging society of dissident elements and encouraging a return to step is patriotic values. Gender Stratification Sociology. Others feared that it would be a social solvent, dissolving and transforming everything it touched. The process of step expansion did not end in August 1914. Other major belligerents took their time and waited upon events. Italy, diplomatically aligned with Germany and Austria since the Triple Alliance of 1882, declared its neutrality on 3 August. In the Essay on Gwendolyn, following months it was ardently courted by France and Britain. On 23 May 1915 the Italian government succumbed to Allied temptations and declared war on Austria-Hungary in pursuit of the last in mitosis territorial aggrandizement in the Trentino.

Bulgaria invaded Serbia on 7 October 1915 and sealed that pugnacious country's fate. Serbia was overrun. The road to Brooks- Influencial Constantinople was opened to the Central Powers. Romania prevaricated about which side to the last step in mitosis join, but finally chose the Allies in August 1916, encouraged by the success of the Russian 'Brusilov Offensive'. It was a fatal miscalculation. The German response was swift and decisive. Romania was rapidly overwhelmed by two invading German armies and its rich supplies of Brooks- Poet wheat and oil did much to keep Germany in the war for another two years. Romania joined Russia as the other Allied power to suffer defeat in the war. It was British belligerency, however, which was fundamental in turning a European conflict into a world war. Britain was the world's greatest imperial power.

The British had world-wide interests and world-wide dilemmas. They also had world-wide friends. Germany found itself at war not only with Great Britain but also with the dominions of the last step in mitosis Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and psychosocial stages, South Africa and with the greatest British imperial possession, India. Concern for the defence of India helped bring the British into conflict with the Ottoman Empire in November 1914 and resulted in a major war in the Middle East. Most important of all, perhaps, Britain's close political, economic, and cultural ties with the United States of America, if they did not ensure that nation's eventual entry into the war, certainly made it possible.

The American declaration of war on Germany on in mitosis 6 April 1917 was a landmark not only in the history of the United States but also in that of Europe and the world, bringing to of the Arab an end half a millennium of European domination and ushering in 'the American century'. The geographical scale of the conflict meant that it was not one war but many. On the Western Front in step in mitosis France and Belgium the French and on Gwendolyn, their British allies, reinforced from 1917 onwards by the Americans, were locked in a savage battle of attrition against the German army. Here the war became characterized by increasingly elaborate and sophisticated trench systems and field fortifications. Dense belts of step barbed wire, concrete pillboxes, intersecting arcs of machine-gun fire, and accumulating masses of Influencial Poet quick-firing field and heavy artillery rendered man#156;uvre virtually impossible. The Last Is. Casualties were enormous. The first phase of the war in Essay Influencial the west lasted until November 1914. This witnessed Germany's attempt to defeat France through an enveloping movement round the left flank of the French armies. The plan met with initial success. The advance of the German armies through Belgium and northern France was dramatic. The French, responding with an offensive in the last step is Lorraine, suffered an almost catastrophic national defeat.

France was saved by the iron nerve of its commander-in-chief, General J. J. C. Joffre, who had not only the intelligence but also the strength of character to extricate himself from the ruin of his plans and Analysis of the Arab Spring, order the historic counter-attack against step in mitosis, the German right wing, the 'miracle of the Marne'. The German armies were forced to retreat and to entrench. Their last attempt at a breakthrough was stopped by French and British forces near the small Flemish market town of Ypres in stratification November. By Christmas 1914 trench lines stretched from the Belgian coast to the Swiss frontier. Although the step in mitosis is, events of 1914 did not result in a German victory, they left the Germans in a very strong position. The German army held the strategic initiative.

It was free to retreat to positions of tactical advantage and to on Gwendolyn Influencial reinforce them with all the skill and ingenuity of German military engineering. Enormous losses had been inflicted on in mitosis is France. Two-fifths of psychosocial France's military casualties were incurred in 1914. These included a tenth of the officer corps. German troops occupied a large area of northern France, including a significant proportion of French industrial capacity and mineral wealth. These realities dominated the in mitosis is, second phase of the war in the west. This lasted from Implications Online Educators Essay November 1914 until March 1918. It was characterized by the unsuccessful attempts of the French and their British allies to evict the German armies from French and Belgian territory.

During this period the in mitosis, Germans stood mainly on the defensive, but they showed during the Second Battle of Ypres (22 April-25 May 1915), and more especially during the Battle of Online Educators Essay examples Verdun (21 February-18 December 1916), a dangerous capacity to disrupt their enemies' plans. The French made three major assaults on the last step in mitosis is the German line: in the spring of 1915 in Artois; in the autumn of 1915 in Champagne; and in the spring of 1917 on the Aisne (the 'Nivelle Offensive'). Essay. These attacks were characterized by the intensity of the fighting and the absence of achievement. The Last Step In Mitosis Is. Little ground was gained. No positions of strategic significance were captured. Psychosocial Chart. Casualties were severe. The failure of the Nivelle Offensive led to a serious breakdown of in mitosis is morale in the French army.

For much of the rest of 1917 it was incapable of major offensive action. The British fared little better. Although their armies avoided mutiny they came no closer to breaching the gender, German line. During the battles of the the last, Somme (1 July19 November 1916) and the Third Battle of Ypres (31 July-12 November 1917) they inflicted great losses on the German army at Essay on The Three-Ring Prison great cost to themselves, but the German line held and no end to the last step in mitosis is the war appeared in sight. The final phase of the war in the west lasted from 21 March until 11 November 1918. This saw Germany once more attempt to achieve victory with a knock-out blow and once more fail. Analysis Spring. The German attacks used sophisticated new artillery and infantry tactics. The Last Step. They enjoyed spectacular success. Analysis Arab Essay. The British 5th Army on the Somme suffered a major defeat. But the the last step is, British line held in front of Amiens and later to the north in front of Ypres.

No real strategic damage was done. By midsummer the German attacks had petered out. The German offensive broke the trench deadlock and returned movement and man#156;uvre to the strategic agenda. It also compelled closer Allied military co-operation under a French generalissimo, General Ferdinand Foch. The Allied counter-offensive began in July. At the Battle of Amiens, on 8 August, the British struck the German army a severe blow. For the rest of the war in pricing the west the Germans were in retreat.

On the the last, Eastern Front in Galicia and Russian Poland the Germans and their Austrian allies fought the gallant but disorganized armies of Russia. Here the distances involved were very great. Artillery densities were correspondingly less. Man#156;uvre was always possible and cavalry could operate effectively. This did nothing to lessen casualties, which were greater even than those on on Gwendolyn Brooks- Influencial the Western Front. The war in the east was shaped by German strength, Austrian weakness, and Russian determination. German military superiority was apparent from the start of the war.

The Russians suffered two crushing defeats in 1914, at step Tannenberg (26-31 August) and the Masurian Lakes (5-15 September). These victories ensured the Implications for Today’s Online Educators Essay examples, security of Germany's eastern frontiers for the rest of the war. They also established the military legend of Field-Marshal Paul von Hindenburg and General Erich Ludendorff, who emerged as principal directors of the German war effort in the autumn of 1916. By September 1915 the Russians had been driven out of Poland, Lithuania, and Courland. Austro-German armies occupied Warsaw and the Russian frontier fortresses of is Ivangorod, Kovno, Novo-Georgievsk, and Brest-Litovsk. These defeats proved costly to Russia. They also proved costly to pricing Austria. Austria had a disastrous war. Italian entry into the war compelled the Austrians to fight an three fronts: against Serbia in in mitosis the Balkans; against Russia in Galicia; against Italy in Essay Influencial Poet the Trentino.

This proved too much for Austrian strength. Their war effort was characterized by dependency on Germany. The Last Step In Mitosis. Germans complained that they were shackled to examples the 'Austrian corpse'. The war exacerbated the Austro-Hungarian Empire's many ethnic and national tensions. By 1918 Austria was weary of the war and in mitosis, desperate for peace. This had a major influence on Spring the German decision to seek a victory in the west in the spring of the last step is 1918. Perceptions of the Russian war effort have been overshadowed by the October Revolution of 1917 and by Bolshevik 'revolutionary defeatism' which acquiesced in the punitive Treaty of Brest-Litovsk (14 March 1918) and took Russia out of the war. This has obscured the astonishing Russian determination to keep faith with the Brooks-, Franco-British alliance.

Without the Russian contribution in the east it is the last is far from on The Prison certain that Germany could have been defeated in the west. The unhesitating Russian willingness to aid their western allies is nowhere more apparent than in the 'Brusilov Offensive' (June-September 1916), which resulted in the capture of the Bukovina and large parts of Galicia, as well as 350,000 Austrian prisoners, but at a cost to Russia which ultimately proved mortal. In southern Europe the Italian army fought eleven indecisive battles in an attempt to dislodge the Austrians from the last in mitosis is their mountain strongholds beyond the Isonzo river. In October 1917 Austrian reinforcement by seven German divisions resulted in a major Italian defeat at Caporetto. Gender Sociology. The Italians were pushed back beyond the Piave. This defeat produced changes in the last in mitosis the Italian high command.

During 1918 Italy discovered a new unity of purpose and a greater degree of organization. On 24 October 1918 Italian and British forces recrossed the Piave and split the Austrian armies in two at Vittorio Veneto. Austrian retreat turned into rout and then into sociology surrender. In the Balkans the Serbs fought the Austrians and Bulgarians, suffering massive casualties, including the highest proportion of servicemen killed of any belligerent power. In October 1915 a Franco-British army was sent to Macedonia to operate against the Bulgarians. It struggled to have any influence on the war. The Germans mocked it and declared Salonika to be the biggest internment camp in Europe, but the French and British eventually broke out of the malarial plains into the mountainous valleys of the Vardar and Struma rivers before inflicting defeat on the last step in mitosis Bulgaria in the autumn of 1918.

In the Middle East British armies fought the Turks in a major conflict with far-reaching consequences. Here the war was characterized by the doggedness of Turkish resistance and by the constant struggle against climate, terrain, and for Today’s Essay, disease. The British attempted to the last step knock Turkey out of the war with an attack on the Gallipoli peninsula in April 1915, but were compelled to withdraw at the end of the year, having failed to Essay break out from their narrow beach-heads in the face of stubborn Turkish resistance, coordinated by a German general, Liman von Sanders. The British also suffered another humiliating reverse in Mesopotamia when a small army commanded by Major-General C. V. F. Townshend advanced to Ctesiphon but outran its supplies and was compelled to surrender at Kut-al-Amara in April 1916. Only after the appointment of the last step in mitosis is Sir Stanley Maude to the command of British forces in Mesopotamia did Britain's superior military and economic strength begin to assert itself. Maude's forces captured Baghdad in March 1917, the first clear-cut British victory of the war. Gender Stratification. The following June General Sir Edmund Allenby was appointed to command British forces in Egypt.

He captured Jerusalem by in mitosis, Christmas and in September 1918 annihilated Turkish forces in Palestine. Turkey surrendered on 31 October 1918. The war also found its way to tropical Africa. Germany's colonies in West and south-west Africa succumbed to British and South African forces by of the Arab Spring, the spring of the last in mitosis is 1915. In East Africa, however, a German army of locally raised black African soldiers commanded by Colonel Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck conducted a brilliant guerrilla campaign, leading over pricing, 100,000 British and South African troops a merry dance through the the last step is, bush and Online Educators Essay examples, surrendering only after the defeat of Germany in Europe became known. On and under the oceans of the world, Great Britain and Germany contested naval supremacy. Surface battles took place in the Pacific, the south Atlantic, and step is, the North Sea. The British generally had the better of these despite suffering some disappointments, notably at Coronel (1 November 1914) and Jutland (31 May-1 June 1916), the only major fleet engagement, during which Admiral Sir John Jellicoe failed to deliver the objective, expected Nelsonic victory of total annihilation. Submarine warfare took place in the North Sea, the Black Sea, the Atlantic, the Mediterranean, and step in mitosis, the Baltic. German resort to unrestricted submarine warfare (February 1917) brought Britain to the verge of ruin. German violation of international law and sinking of American ships also helped bring the United States into the war on the Allied side.

The British naval blockade of Germany, massively reinforced by the Americans from Implications for Today’s Educators April 1917, played an important role in German defeat. The geographical scale of the conflict made it very difficult for political and military leaders to the last in mitosis control events. Spring Essay. The obligations of coalition inhibited strategic independence. Short-term military needs often forced the great powers to step in mitosis allow lesser states a degree of licence they would not have enjoyed in peacetime. Governments' deliberate arousal of popular passions made suggestions of compromise seem treasonable. The ever-rising cost of the military means inflated the Essay on The, political ends. The Last In Mitosis. Hopes of a peaceful new world order began to replace old diplomatic abstractions such as 'the balance of power'. Implications Online. Rationality went out of season. War aims were obscured. Strategies were distorted.

Great Britain entered the war on proclaimed principles of international law and in defence of the rights of small nations. By 1918 the British government was pursuing a Middle Eastern policy of naked imperialism (in collaboration with the French), while simultaneously encouraging the aspirations of Arab nationalism and promising support for the establishment of step a Jewish national home in Palestine. It was truly a war of illusions. Europe's political and military leaders have been subjected to much retrospective criticism for their belief that the #145;war would be over by Christmas'. This belief was not based on complacency. Even those who predicted with chilling accuracy the murderous nature of First World War battlefields, such as the Polish banker Jan Bloch, expected the war to be short. This was because they also expected it to be brutal and costly, in both blood and treasure.

No state could be expected to sustain such a war for gender stratification very long without disastrous consequences. The war which gave the lie to these assumptions was the American Civil War. This had been studied by European military observers at close quarters. Most, however, dismissed it. This was particularly true of the Prussians. Their own military experience in the wars against the last step in mitosis is, Austria (1866) and France (1870-1) seemed more relevant and compelling. These wars were both short.

They were also instrumental. In 1914 the Germans sought to replicate the success of their Prussian predecessors. They aimed to fight a 'cabinet war' on the Bismarckian model. Analysis Of The. To do so they developed a plan of breath-taking recklessness which depended on the ability of the the last is, German army to defeat France in the thirty-nine days allowed for a war in the west. Strategic conduct of the First World War was dominated by German attempts to achieve victory through knock-out blows.

Erich von Falkenhayn, German commander-in-chief from September 1914 until August 1916, was almost alone in his belief that Germany could obtain an outcome to the war satisfactory to its interests and those of its allies without winning smashing victories of total annihilation. His bloody attempt to win the war by attrition at erikson's stages chart Verdun in 1916 did little to the last in mitosis recommend the strategy to his fellow countrymen. The preference for knock-out blows remained. It was inherited from German history and pricing objective, was central to Germany's pre-war planning. Pre-war German strategy was haunted by the fear of a war on two fronts, against France in the west and Russia in the east.

The possibility of a diplomatic solution to this dilemma was barely considered by the military-dominated German government. A military solution was sought instead. The German high command decided that the best form of step is defence was attack. They would avoid a war on two fronts by knocking out one of their enemies before the other could take the field. The enemy with the Arab Spring Essay, slowest military mobilization was Russia. The French army would be in the field first. France was therefore chosen to receive the the last step in mitosis is, first blow. Once France was defeated the German armies would turn east and defeat Russia. The Schlieffen Plan rested on gender sociology two assumptions: that it would take the Russians six weeks to put an army into the field; and that six weeks was long enough to defeat France.

By 1914 the first assumption was untrue: Russia put an army into the field in fifteen days. The second assumption left no margin for error, no allowance for the inevitable friction of war, and in mitosis, was always improbable. The failure of the Schlieffen Plan gave the First World War its essential shape. This was maintained by the enduring power of the German army, which was, in John Terraine's phrase, 'the motor of the war'. The German army was a potent instrument. It had played a historic role in Analysis Essay the emergence of the German state. It enjoyed enormous prestige. It was able to recruit men of talent and dedication as officers and NCOs. As a result it was well trained and well led. It had the step, political power to command the resources of Germany's powerful industrial economy. Germany's position at sociology the heart of in mitosis is Europe meant that it could operate on interior lines of communication in a European war.

The efficient German railway network permitted the movement of German troops quickly from front to front. The superior speed of the locomotive over the ship frustrated Allied attempts to use their command of the sea to stages chart operate effectively against the periphery of the Central Powers. The power of the German army was the fundamental strategic reality of the step is, war. 'We cannot hope to win this war until we have defeated the German army,' wrote the commander-in-chief of the British Expeditionary Force, Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig. Gender. This was a judgement whose consequences some Allied political leaders were reluctant to embrace. The German army suffered from two important strategic difficulties. The first of these was the inability of the German political system to in mitosis is forge appropriate instruments of strategic control. The second was Great Britain. German government rested on the tortured personality of the Kaiser. It was riven by intrigue and indecision. The kind of centralized decision-making structures which eventually evolved in Britain and France (though not in Russia) failed to evolve in on Gwendolyn Influencial Germany. When the Kaiser proved incapable of step is coordinating German strategy, he was replaced not by a system but by other individuals, seemingly more effective.

Field Marshal Paul von Hindenburg radiated calm and inspired confidence. This gave him the appearance of a great man but without the substance. General Erich Ludendorff was a military technocrat of outstanding talent, but he was highly strung and without political judgement. In 1918 his offensive strategy brought Germany to ruin. The failure to develop effective mechanisms of strategic control applied equally to pricing the Austro-German alliance.

The Austrians depended on German military and economic strength, but the Germans found it difficult to turn this into 'leverage'. The Last Step In Mitosis Is. Austria was willing to take German help but not German advice. Only after the crushing reverses inflicted by Brusilov's offensive did the Austrians submit to German strategic direction. By then it was almost certainly too late. Germany's pre-war strategic planning was based entirely on winning a short war. British belligerency made this unlikely. The British were a naval rather than a military power. They could not be defeated by the German army, at least not quickly.

The British could, if necessary, hold out even after their Continental allies had been defeated. They might even have chosen to do this. They had in the past and they would again in the not-too-distant future. The German navy was too weak to defeat the British, but large enough to Essay on The Prison make them resentful and the last step, suspicious of German policy; it ought never to stratification have been built. British entry into the war dramatically shifted the economic balance in favour of the Allies.

Britain was one of the world's great industrial powers. Seventy-five per cent of the step, world's shipping was British built and much of it British owned. London was the world's greatest money and commodities market. Essay Prison. British access to world supplies of food and credit and to imperial resources of manpower made them a formidable enemy, despite the 'contemptible little army' which was all they could put into the field on the outbreak of war. From about mid-1916 onwards British economic, industrial, and manpower resources began to be fully mobilized. Germany was forced for the first time to confront the reality of material inferiority. Germany had increasingly to fight a war of scarcity, the Allies increasingly a war of abundance. French strategy was dominated by the German occupation of much of the last step in mitosis is northern France and gender stratification, most of Belgium. At its closest point the German line was less than 40 miles from Paris.

A cautious, defensive strategy was politically unacceptable and step in mitosis, psychologically impossible, at least during the first three years of the war. Gender Stratification. During 1914 and 1915 France sacrificed enormous numbers of men in step in mitosis is the attempt to Essay on Gwendolyn Brooks- Influencial evict the Germans. This was followed by the torment of Verdun, where the Germans deliberately attempted to 'bleed France white'. French fears of military inferiority were confirmed. If France was to step is prevail its allies would have to psychosocial stages of development chart contribute in kind. For the British this was a radical departure from the historic norm and one which has appalled them ever since. British strategy became increasingly subordinated to the needs of the Franco-British alliance. The British fought the war as they had to, not as they wanted to. The British way in the last in mitosis is warfare envisaged a largely naval war. A naval blockade would weaken Germany economically. If the German navy chose not to break the pricing, stranglehold Germany would lose the war.

If it did choose to fight it would be annihilated. The Last In Mitosis. British maritime superiority would be confirmed. Neutral opinion would be cowed. Fresh allies would be encouraged into the fight. The blockade would be waged with greater ruthlessness. Military operations would be confined to the dispatch of a small professional expeditionary force to on The help the French. Step. Remaining military forces would be employed on the periphery of the Central Powers remote from the German army, where it was believed they would exercise a strategic influence out of all proportion to their size. The British never really fought the war they envisaged. The branch of the British army which sent most observers to the American Civil War was the Corps of Royal Engineers.

And it was a Royal Engineers' officer, Lord Kitchener, who was one of the few European political and military leaders to recognize that the war would be long and require the complete mobilization of national resources. Kitchener was appointed Secretary of State for War on 5 August 1914. He doubted whether the French and the Russians were strong enough to defeat Germany without massive British military reinforcement. He immediately sought to raise a mass citizen army. There was an overwhelming popular response to his call to arms. Kitchener envisaged this new British army taking the field in 1917 after the French and Russian armies had rendered the German army ripe for defeat. Analysis Of The Arab. They would be 'the last million men'. They would win the war and decide the peace. For the British a satisfactory peace would be one which guaranteed the long-term security of the the last step in mitosis is, British Empire. Online Essay Examples. This security was threatened as much by Britain's allies, France and Russia, as it was by Germany. It was imperative not only step that the Allies win the war but also that Britain emerge from it as the dominant power.

Kitchener's expectations were disappointed. Stratification. By 1916 it was the French army which was ripe for step is defeat, not the German. But the gender stratification, obligations of the in mitosis is, French alliance were inescapable. The British could not afford to acquiesce in a French defeat. French animosity and resentment would replace the valuable mutual understanding which had been achieved in the decade before the war. The French had a great capacity for making imperial mischief.

And so did the Russians. If they were abandoned they would have every reason for doing so. Pricing. There seemed no choice. The ill-trained and ill-equipped British armies would have to take the field before they were ready and be forced to take a full part in the attrition of German military power. The casualties which this strategy of 'offensive attrition' involved were unprecedented in British history.

They were also unacceptable to some British political leaders. Winston Churchill and David Lloyd George (Prime Minister from December 1916), in particular, were opposed to the British army 'chewing barbed wire' on the last step is the Western Front. They looked to use it elsewhere, against Germany's allies in the eastern Mediterranean, the Essay on The Three-Ring, Middle East, and the Balkans. Their attempts to do this were inhibited by the need to the last in mitosis is keep France in the war. This could only be done in France and by fighting the German army.

They were also inhibited by the war's operational and tactical realities. These imposed themselves on Gallipoli and in Salonika and in Italy just as they did on the Western Front. Attempts to Three-Ring implement an Allied grand strategy enjoyed some success. The Last In Mitosis. Allied political and military leaders met regularly. At Chantilly in December 1915 and December 1916 they determined to stretch the German army to its limits by simultaneous offensive action on the western, eastern, and Italian fronts. Erikson's Stages Of Development. A Supreme Allied War Council was established at Versailles on 27 November 1917, and was given the power to control Allied reserves. Franco-British co-operation was especially close. This was largely a matter of practical necessity which relied on the mutual respect and understanding between French and British commanders-in-chief on the Western Front.

The system worked well until the German Spring Offensive of 1918 threatened to divide the Allies. Only then was it replaced by a more formal structure. The Last Step Is. But not even this attained the levels of joint planning and control which became a feature of Anglo-American co-operation in the Second World War. Allied grand strategy was conceptually sound. The problems which it encountered were not principally ones of planning or of co-ordination but of performance.

Achieving operational effectiveness on the battlefield was what was difficult. This has given the war, especially the war in the west, its enduring image of of development boneheaded commanders wantonly sacrificing the lives of their men in is fruitless pursuit of impossibly grandiose strategic designs. The battlefields of the First World War were the product of a century of economic, social, and political change. Gender Sociology. Europe in 1914 was more populous, more wealthy, and the last step in mitosis, more coherently organized than ever before. The rise of nationalism gave states unprecedented legitimacy and Educators examples, authority. This allowed them to demand greater sacrifices from in mitosis their civilian populations. Improvements in agriculture reduced the numbers needed to work on the land and psychosocial, provided a surplus of males of military age. Step In Mitosis. They also allowed larger and larger armies to be fed and kept in the field for years at a time.

Changes in administrative practice brought about by the electric telegraph, the telephone, the typewriter, and the growth of railways allowed these armies to be assembled and deployed quickly. Industrial technology provided new weapons of unprecedented destructiveness. Quick-firing rifled cannon, breech-loading magazine rifles, and machine-guns transformed the range, rapidity, accuracy, and deadliness of military firepower. They also ensured that in any future war, scientists, engineers, and mechanics would be as important as soldiers. These changes did much to make the First World War the first 'modern war'. But it did not begin as one.

The fact of a firepower revolution was understood in most European armies. The consequences of it were not. The experience of the Russo-Japanese War (1904-5) appeared to offer a human solution to the problems of the Essay on The Three-Ring Prison, technological battlefield. Victory would go to the side with the best-trained, most disciplined army, commanded by generals of iron resolution, prepared to step in mitosis is maintain the offensive in the face of huge losses. As a result the opening battles of the war were closer in conception and on The Three-Ring, execution to those of the the last step is, Napoleonic era than to the battles of 1916 onwards. It is difficult to say exactly when 'modern' war began, but it was apparent by the end of 1915 that pre-war assumptions were false.

Well-trained, highly disciplined French, German, and Russian soldiers of high morale were repeatedly flung into of the Essay battle by commanders of iron resolve. The results were barren of strategic achievement. The human costs were immense. The 'human solution' was not enough. The search for a technological solution was inhibited not only by the tenacity of pre-war concepts but also by the limitations of the technology itself. The principal instrument of education was artillery. And the mode of instruction was experience.

Shell-fire was merciless to troops in the open. The response was to get out of the open and into the ground. Soldiers did not dig trenches out of perversity in order to be cold, wet, rat-infested, and lice-ridden. They dug them in order to survive. Step In Mitosis. The major tactical problem of the war became how to break these trench lines once they were established and sociology, reinforced. For much of the war artillery lacked the ability to find enemy targets, to hit them accurately, and to destroy them effectively. Contemporary technology failed to provide a man-portable wireless.

Communication for most of the war was dependent on telephone or telegraph wires. These were always broken by shell-fire and the last is, difficult to pricing protect. Artillery and infantry commanders were rarely in voice communication and both usually lacked 'real time' intelligence of step in mitosis is battlefield events; First World War infantry commanders could not easily call down artillery fire when confronted by an enemy obstruction. As a result the Essay Three-Ring Prison, coordination of infantry and artillery was very difficult and often impossible. In Mitosis Is. Infantry commanders were forced to fall back on Implications for Today’s Educators examples their own firepower and this was often inadequate.

The infantry usually found itself with too much to do, and paid a high price for its weakness. Artillery was not only a major part of the problem, however. The Last Is. It was also a major part of the solution. During 1918 Allied artillery on the western front emerged as a formidable weapon. Target acquisition was transformed by aerial photographic reconnaissance and the sophisticated techniques of flash-spotting and sound-ranging. These allowed mathematically predicted fire, or map-shooting. The pre-registration of guns on enemy targets by actual firing was no longer necessary. The possibility of surprise returned to the battlefield. Accuracy was greatly improved by maintaining operating histories for individual guns.

Battery commanders were supplied with detailed weather forecasts every four hours. Each gun could now be individually calibrated according to its own peculiarities and according to wind speed and direction, temperature, and humidity. Essay On Gwendolyn Brooks-. All types and the last in mitosis, calibres of guns, including heavy siege howitzers whose steep angle of pricing objective fire was especially effective in trench warfare, became available in virtually unlimited numbers. Munitions were also improved. Poison gas shells became available for the first time in large numbers. High explosive replaced shrapnel, a devastating anti-personnel weapon but largely ineffective against the earthworks, barbed wire entanglements, and concrete machine-gun emplacements which the infantry had to assault. Instantaneous percussion fuses concentrated the the last step in mitosis is, explosive effect of shells more effectively against barbed wire and reduced the cratering of the battlefield which had often rendered the forward movement of supplies and reinforcements difficult if not impossible.

Artillery-infantry co-operation was radically improved by on The Prison, aerial fire control. The tactical uses to which this destructive instrument were put also changed. In 1915, 1916, and for much of 1917 artillery was used principally to kill enemy soldiers. The Last. It always did so, sometimes in large numbers. Stages. But it always spared some, even in front-line trenches.

These were often enough, as during the first day of the Battle of the Somme (1 July 1916), to inflict disastrous casualties on attacking infantry and bring an entire offensive to step is a halt. From the autumn of 1917 and pricing objective, during 1918, however, artillery was principally used to in mitosis suppress enemy defences. Psychosocial Stages. Command posts, telephone exchanges, crossroads, supply dumps, forming-up areas, and gun batteries were targeted. Effective use was made of poison gas, both lethal and lachrymatory, and smoke. The aim was to disrupt the enemy's command and control system and keep his soldiers' heads down until attacking infantry could close with them and bring their own firepower to bear. The attacking infantry were also transformed. In 1914 the British soldier went to war dressed like a gamekeeper in step in mitosis is a soft cap, armed only with rifle and bayonet.

In 1918 he went into battle dressed like an Essay Prison industrial worker in the last is a steel helmet, protected by objective, a respirator against poison gas, armed with automatic weapons and mortars, supported by tanks and ground-attack aircraft, and preceded by is, a creeping artillery barrage of crushing intensity. Firepower replaced manpower as the instrument of victory. This represented a revolution in the conduct of war. The ever-increasing material superiority of the western Allies confronted the German army with major problems. Its response was organizational. As early as 1915 even the weakly armed British proved that they could always break into the German front-line trenches. The solution was to deepen the trench system and objective, limit the number of infantry in the front line, where they were inviting targets for enemy artillery. The burden of defence rested on machine-gunners carefully sited half a mile or so behind the front line. From the autumn of step in mitosis 1916 the Germans took these changes to their logical conclusion by instituting a system of 'elastic defence in depth'.

The German front line was sited where possible on a reverse slope to make enemy artillery observation difficult. A formal front-line trench system was abandoned. The German first line consisted of machine-gunners located in erikson's stages of development shell-holes, difficult to detect from the air. Their job was to disrupt an enemy infantry assault. This would then be drawn deep into the German position, beyond the supporting fire of its own guns, where it would be counter-attacked and destroyed by the bulk of the German infantry and artillery. This system allowed the Germans to survive against an Allied manpower superiority of more than 3:2 on the Western Front throughout 1917 and to inflict significant losses on step in mitosis is their enemies. The German system required intelligent and well-trained as well as brave soldiers to make it work.

An increasing emphasis was placed on individual initiative, surprise, and speed. In 1918 specially trained #145;stormtroops', supported by a hurricane bombardment designed to disrupt their enemies' lines of communication and Analysis of the Spring Essay, their command and control systems, were ordered to bypass points of the last resistance and advance deep into the enemy's rear. The success they enjoyed was dramatic, and much greater than anything achieved by the French and British, but it was not enough. Attacking German infantry could not maintain the momentum and inflict upon enemy commanders the kind of moral paralysis achieved by German armoured forces in 1940. The Allied line held and exhausted German infantry were eventually forced back by the accumulating weight and increasing sophistication of Allied material technology. The material solution to of the Arab Spring the problems of the step in mitosis is, First World War battlefield, favoured by the western Allies, was not in the gift of soldiers alone. It depended on the ability of the armes' host societies to produce improved military technology in ever-greater amounts. This, in turn, depended on the effectiveness of their political institutions and Essay on The, the quality of their civilian morale. It was a contest at step in mitosis is which the gender sociology, liberal democracies of France and Great Britain (and eventually the United States of America) proved more adept than the authoritarian regimes of Austria-Hungary, Germany, and Russia.

The 'modern war' fought from 1916 onwards resolved itself simply into a demand for in mitosis is more: more men, more weapons, more ammunition, more money, more skills, more morale, more food. Some of the demands were contradictory. More men meant more men for the armies and more men for the factories. Balancing the competing demands was never easy. 'Manpower' (a word first coined in Essay on The Prison 1915) became central to the war effort of all states. In Mitosis Is. The Allies were in a much stronger position than Germany. They had access not only to their home populations but also to for Today’s Essay examples those of their empires. 630,000 Canadians, 412,000 Australians, 136,000 South Africans, and 130,000 New Zealanders served in the British army during the war. Step In Mitosis Is. Very large numbers of Indian troops (800,000 in Mesopotamia alone) and a small number of Africans (perhaps 50,000) also served. (The British also employed several hundred thousand Chinese labourers to work on their lines of communication.) The French recruited some 600,000 combat troops from North and West Africa and a further 200,000 labourers. And of course there were the Americans. American troops arrived in France at on Gwendolyn Brooks- Influencial the rate of the last step is 150,000 a month in 1918.

Truly the new world had come in to redress the balance of the old. The British and French were particularly successful in mobilizing their economies. In Britain this had much to pricing objective do with the work of David Lloyd George as Minister of Munitions (May 1915-July 1916). The grip of the the last step in mitosis, skilled trade unions on industrial processes was relaxed. Spring. Ancient lines of demarcation were blurred. Women replaced men in the factories. Research and development were given a proper place in industrial strategy. Prodigies of production were achieved. On 10 March 1915, at the Battle of Neuve Chapelle, the British Expeditionary Force struggled to accumulate enough shells for half an hour's bombardment. In the autumn of 1918 its 18-pounder field guns were firing a minimum of 100,000 rounds a day.

The French performance was, in many ways, even more impressive, given that so much of their industrial capacity was in German hands. Not only did the French economy supply the French army with increasing amounts of old and new weaponry, but it also supplied most of the American Expeditionary Force's artillery and step in mitosis is, aeroplanes. The French aircraft industry was, arguably, the best in Europe and provided some of the pricing objective, leading aircraft of the war, including the step in mitosis is, Nieuport and the SPAD VII. Morale was also a key factor. All sides tried to explain and justify the chart, war and used increasingly refined techniques of propaganda to maintain commitment to the last in mitosis is the cause. Giving the impression of adversity shared equally among the Analysis of the Arab, classes became a key theme. One of the major threats to this was the step in mitosis is, equality of access to food supplies. In Germany this proved increasingly difficult to maintain.

Morale deteriorated and industrial efficiency suffered as a result. British agriculture did not perform particularly well during the war, but British maritime superiority and financial power allowed them to command the agricultural resources of North and South America and Australasia. Food was one of the Allies#146; principal war-winning weapons. The degree of erikson's chart active resistance to the war was low in most countries. But war-weariness set in everywhere by 1917.

There were many strikes and much industrial unrest. In Russia this was severe enough to produce a revolution and then a Bolshevik coup d#146;tat which took Russia out of the war in 1918. The social consequences of this mass mobilization were less spectacular than is sometimes claimed. There were advances for the organized working class, especially its trade unions, especially in Britain, and arguably for the last step in mitosis women, but the working class of Europe paid a high price on the battlefield for social advances at home. And in the defeated states there was very little social advance anyway. The First World War redrew the map of Europe and the Middle East. Four great empires, the Romanov, the Hohenzollern, the Habsburg, and the Ottoman, were defeated and collapsed. They were replaced by a number of weak and sometimes avaricious successor states. Russia underwent a bloody civil war before the establishment of a Communist Soviet Union which put it beyond the Arab Essay, pale of European diplomacy for a generation. Germany became a republic branded at its birth with the stigma of defeat, increasingly weakened by the burden of Allied reparations and by inflation.

France recovered the provinces of Alsace and Lorraine, but continued to be haunted by fear and loathing of Germany. Italy was disappointed by the territorial rewards of its military sacrifice. This provided fertile soil for Mussolini's Fascists, who had overthrown parliamentary democracy by in mitosis is, 1924. The British maintained the Essay on Gwendolyn Brooks- Poet, integrity and independence of Belgium. The Last Step In Mitosis Is. They also acquired huge increases in imperial territory and imperial obligation. But they did not achieve the security for the Empire which they sought.

The white dominions were unimpressed by the quality of British military leadership. Gender Sociology. The First World War saw them mature as independent nations seeking increasingly to go their own way. The stirrings of revolt in the last step India were apparent as soon as the war ended. In 1922 the British were forced, under American pressure, to abandon the Anglo-Japanese alliance, so useful to Essay them in protecting their Far Eastern empire. They were also forced to accept naval parity with the Americans and a bare superiority over the Japanese. 'This is not a peace,' Marshal Foch declared in 1919, 'but an step armistice for twenty-five years.' The cost of all this in human terms was 8.5 million dead and 21 million wounded out of some 65 million men mobilized.

The losses among particular groups, especially young, educated middle-class males, were often severe, but the demographic shape of Europe was not fundamentally changed. The real impact was moral. The losses struck a blow at European self-confidence and pretension to superior civilization. It was a blow, perhaps, whose consequences have not even now fully unfolded.
